DENVER (AP) — Justin Simmons never paid much attention to the Broncos' long losing streak to the Kansas City Chiefs or the way Patrick Mahomes had owned them ever since winning in Denver in his first NFL start back in 2017.

Simmons won't have to address — or ignore — either point again after the Broncos throttled the defending Super Bowl champs 24-9 on a frigid Sunday afternoon.

“It just felt so good to win,” Simmons said after the Broncos (3-5) ended their 16-game losing streak to the Chiefs (6-2) by dominating every facet against a team that hadn’t lost to Denver since Week 2 of the 2015 season.

It was Mahomes' first loss to Denver after 12 wins and his first road defeat in the AFC West after winning his first 16 divisional games away from Arrowhead Stadium.

He said the Broncos had a great game plan and executed.

“And we didn’t execute or score any points,” he said.

Mahomes experienced flu-like symptoms, apparently catching a stomach bug from his wife and two young children, who got sick during the week.

“I started feeling bad last night,” said Mahomes, who had a pedestrian day with a 59.2 passer rating, three sacks and two interceptions.

In beating Kansas City for the first time in 2,965 days, the Broncos outplayed the Chiefs in every phase. Afterward, they were serenaded off the field to the sound of Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off” blaring throughout Empower Field.

Swift wasn’t on hand to witness&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-kansas-city-travis-kelce-taylor-swift-analysis-nfl-95b2a5cf818b39649c1e6ed49a45d315">Travis Kelce’s six catches for 58 yards</a>&nbsp;or the awful day for the rest of the Chiefs, who posted three field goals, went 0 for 3 in the red zone and turned it over four times on offense to go with a turnover on downs and a muffed punt that Denver recovered.

Simmons recovered a fumble and picked off Mahomes for the sixth time in his career. Those takeaways led to 10 points as the Broncos posted back-to-back wins for the first time in over a year.

Russell Wilson only threw 19 times but three of his dozen completions were in the end zone, to receivers&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Broncos/status/1718737837162389547?s=20">Jerry Jeudy</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/NFL/status/1718763258578862142?s=20">Courtland Sutton</a>&nbsp;and running back&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Broncos/status/1718728905295646887?s=20">Javonte Williams</a>, who ran 27 times for 85 yards and caught three passes for 13 yards.

Williams' TD was his first since returning from a devastating left knee injury he suffered in the first month of the 2022 season.

“We believe in who we are,” Wilson said after the Broncos, who came in averaging just 22 carries a game, next-to-last in the league, ran the ball 40 times for 153 yards in controlling the clock and the tempo.

Denver made a 14-9 halftime lead hold up by controlling the clock and keeping Mahomes and Kelce cooling their cleats on the sideline in the second half. Kansas City had just three second-half possessions before getting the ball back for one meaningless snap at the end.

The Broncos blew the game open when rookie linebacker Drew Sanders recovered Mecole Hardman's muffed punt at the Chiefs 10-yard line early in the fourth quarter. Two plays later Wilson hit Sutton in the left corner to make it 21-9, making the Broncos the first opponent to top 20 points against K.C. this season.

Mahomes drove the Chiefs to the Denver 27 but Skyy Moore couldn't bring in a perfectly placed toss in the end zone on fourth down with 7:35 left.

Simmons, who had a fumble recovery in the first half, intercepted Mahomes with about 5 minutes left and the Broncos added a short field goal with 31 seconds remaining.

The Chiefs never trailed by more than 10 points in any of their 16 consecutive wins over Denver — it was the third-longest win streak against one opponent in NFL history — but they fell behind 14-3 early on and never found their footing.

In the first half, Mahomes also was intercepted by cornerback Ja'Quan McMillian and strip-sacked by Baron Browning with Jonathon Cooper recovering the loose ball.

“Patrick Mahomes is a hard quarterback” to sack, said Browning, who had three QB hits to go with his two sacks. “He scrambles. He can move around, stop on a dime, spin around. There was a play early in the game where I thought I had a kill shot, he stopped. He's a playmaker, so it feels good to be able to corral him like a chicken.”

Three weeks ago at Arrowhead, the Chiefs were just 1 for 5 in the red zone but managed to pull off a 19-8 win against the Broncos. On Sunday, they were 0 for 3 inside Denver's 20.

“Yeah, we weren’t down there too much today,” said Mahomes, who was held without a touchdown throw for the first time since Dec. 5, 2021, in a 22-9 win over Denver.

“It's the worst I felt walking out of the stadium,” Mahomes said after losing for the first time in six trips to Denver. "It's a great environment and I actually have a lot of fun playing here. They love the game, they know the game. But it is what it is. They beat us. They were the better football team today and I give them their props.”

Chiefs LB Willie Gay injured his tailbone in the second half.

The streak is over! Broncos thrash Chiefs 24-9

Lincoln&nbsp;- Nebraska's Blackshirts produced another dominant performance powering Nebraska to a 31-14 win over Purdue at Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

With its third consecutive victory, Nebraska improved to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the Big Ten while the Boilermakers fell to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the conference.&nbsp;

The Blackshirts helped Nebraska build a 24-0 lead into the fourth quarter, before Purdue was able to capitalize on a pair of late turnovers to cut the lead to 24-14.&nbsp;

But Heinrich Haarberg, Emmett Johnson and the Nebraska offense mustered a game-sealing touchdown late in the fourth before defensive back Tommi Hill put the finishing touches on a big day with his second interception of the game with just under two minutes left.

Haarberg, who improved to 5-1 as a starter, finished the day 6-of-11 passing for 122 yards with two touchdown passes, while adding 57 rushing yards on 19 carries.

Johnson added 13 carries for a game-high 76 rushing yards and the only rushing touchdown of the game. Josh Fleeks and Anthony Grant each contributed 21 rushing yards, as the Huskers finished with 155 yards on 48 carries.

The defense held Purdue under 200 total yards, including 96 rushing yards on 29 carries, while limiting the Boilermakers to 99 yards on 17-of-33 passing with two interceptions. The first time since holding Michigan to less than 100 yards rushing and 100 yards passing in 2012.

The Blackshirts flexed their muscles from the start, despite starting the game deep in their own territory after the Huskers fumbled the opening kickoff.

Purdue started its first drive at the NU 32, but the Blackshirts pushed the Boilers back and forced a turnover on downs after five-play drive of minus-1 yard.

After a scoreless first quarter, Haarberg and the Huskers found their footing with a methodical 15-play, 87-yard drive that started with 4:37 left in the first quarter and ended with Haarberg's one-yard touchdown pass to tight end Thomas Fidone with 10:43 left in the second quarter to give Nebraska a 7-0 lead. Fidone's fourth touchdown grab of the season capped Nebraska's longest drive of the season in plays, yardage and time (8:52).

The Blackshirts made quick work of Purdue's ensuing drive, as Hill grabbed his first interception of the game and returned it six yards to the Nebraska 27.

One play later, the Huskers went up 14-0 with Haarberg's 73-yard touchdown pass to freshman wide receiver Jaylen Lloyd. It was Lloyd's first career touchdown.

The Husker defense shut down the Boilermakers the rest of the half to take a 14-0 lead to the locker room.

The Blackshirts forced a three-and-out on Purdue's drive to open the second half, but the Husker offense turned it over on Nebraska's first offensive play of the third quarter.

The Boilers took over at the NU 13, but the Blackshirts pushed them back to then NU 20, before Elijah Jeudy blocked Ben Freehill's 37-yard field goal attempt. Quinton Newsome scooped it up and raced 68 yards untouched into the end zone to put the Huskers in front 21-0 less than three minutes into the half. It was Nebraska's first blocked field goal for a touchdown since Nathan Gerry accomplished the feat against Minnesota in 2014.

Nebraska extended the margin to 24-0 with 12:23 left in the game on freshman Tristan Alvano's career-long 55-yard field goal.

The Blackshirts continued to play great defense, but another Nebraska turnover set Purdue up at the Husker 24. The Boilermakers finally converted with Hudson Card's 29-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Veal with 9:08 left.

Less than three minutes later, Purdue's Kydran Jenkins forced another fumble on 4th down-and-1, picked it up and ran 55 yards to paydirt to cut the margin to 24-14 with 6:24 remaining.

Johnson then ended any of Purdue's comeback hopes with his 28-yard touchdown run to cap a six-play, 48-yard drive to make it 31-14 with 3:54 left.

Nebraska won the time of possession battle 33:10-26:50, and committed fewer penalties (6-49) than Purdue (8-84).

Isaac Gifford led the Blackshirts with 10 tackles including a pair of TFLs and a breakup, while John Bullock added seven stops. Phalen Sanford pitched in six tackles, while Newsome contributed five tackles.

The Huskers return to Big Ten road action next week when they travel to Michigan State. Kickoff in East Lansing is set for 11 a.m. (CT) with live television coverage on FS1.

The margin of victory was slim, but after trailing 21-10 at halftime the Chadron State College football team didn’t give up any more points and pulled out a 24-21 win over New Mexico Highlands in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference clash on the road Saturday.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It was the Eagles’ third win in four games, improving their record to 4-5 overall and 3-4 in the conference.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Highlands scored on its first two possessions and its final possession in the first half, but was limited to just 81 yards of total offense in the second half.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Meanwhile, the Eagles scored on an interception and 25-yard sprint to the end zone by freshman safety Tucker Peterson midway in the third quarter. A two-point conversion pass from quarterback Preston Pearson to wide receiver Tommy Thomas cut the deficit to 21-18.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Both teams had struggled to keep their offenses on the field during the second half until Chadron State finally completed a 60-yard drive in nine plays when Pearson hit tight end Peter Krohn with an eight-yard pass in the end zone with only 71 seconds remaining.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Chadron State Head Coach Jay Long said was Peterson’s “pick-six” was motivator that helped the Eagles “find a way to win.”

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; “Our offense wasn’t very consistent most of the game, but the defense and special teams kept us in it,” Long said. “The Highlands’ defensive coordinator also had done a good job of preparing for our offense. I am proud that our team found a way to win.”

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Although Highlands kicked off to open the game, the Cowboys scored just 53 seconds later.&nbsp; On the Eagles’ first play from scrimmage a pass was deflected at the line of scrimmage and intercepted Cowboys’ safety Nigil Thomas, who returned it 13 yards to the CSC 15.&nbsp; Running back Shawntay Mills took the ball 14 yards on his first carry and into the end zone on his second.

By: Con Marshall CSC Sports InformationThe margin of victory was slim, but after trailing 21-10 at halftime the Chadron State College football team didn’t give up any more points and pulled out a 24-21 win over New Mexico Highlands in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference clash on the road Saturday.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It was the Eagles’ third win in four games, improving their record to 4-5 overall and 3-4 in the conference.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Highlands scored on its first two possessions and its final possession in the first half, but was limited to just 81 yards of total offense in the second half.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Meanwhile, the Eagles scored on an interception and 25-yard sprint to the end zone by freshman safety Tucker Peterson midway in the third quarter. Lincoln&nbsp;- In a low-scoring Big Ten slugfest dominated by the defenses, Heinrich Haarberg's 44-yard touchdown strike to freshman wide receiver Malachi Coleman on Nebraska's first offensive play of the fourth quarter provided the winning margin in a 17-9 Husker victory over Northwestern on Saturday.

Playing in front of 86,769 fans in the 100th anniversary celebration of Memorial Stadium, Nebraska improved to 4-3 and 2-2 in the Big Ten, while dropping Northwestern to 3-4 and 1-3 in the conference.

Nebraska won despite managing just 248 total yards and committing a pair of first-quarter turnovers. The Huskers rushed for 163 yards on 39 carries and went just 8-for-17 passing for 85 yards.&nbsp;

Northwestern moved for 257 total yards, including 176 yards on 12-of-23 passing with one interception, while managing just 81 rushing yards on 39 carries. The Cats also produced just nine first downs in the game, compared to 17 for the Huskers.

The Blackshirts held the Wildcats to minus-5 rushing yards on 18 second-half carries by recording 13 tackles for loss - Nebraska's most since producing 13 TFL against Illinois in 2019.

Nebraska also played cleaner football than Northwestern, committing just three penalties for 30 yards, while the normally disciplined Cats were flagged eight times for 75 yards.&nbsp;

The Huskers trailed early after Haarberg through an interception on Nebraska's first play from scrimmage to open the game. Devin Turner intercepted the pass to set the Wildcats up with a short field at the Husker 44.

The Blackshirts rose to the challenge and pushed Northwestern back across midfield, but the first seven minutes of the game was played on Nebraska's side of the field.&nbsp;

The Wildcats finally cashed in when Haarberg was intercepted by Rod Heard, who returned it 10 yards to the Nebraska 13. The Blackshirts rose up again, shoving Northwestern back 14 yards to force a 45-yard field goal attempt by Jack Olsen, who connected with the wind at his back to give the Cats a 3-0 lead with 7:18 left in the first quarter.

Haarberg and the Huskers then found an answer by marching 35 yards in nine plays capped by Tristan Alvano's 47-yard field goal against the wind to tie the score at 3-3 with 3:11 left in the period.

Midway through the second quarter, Northwestern put together its only sustained drive of the first half, covering 73 yards in 10 plays, capped by Olsen's 37-yard field goal to regain a three-point lead at 6-3 with 5:48 remaining in the half.

Haarberg and the Huskers rallied for an answer again with a 10-play drive of their own that covered 77 yards and took 5:18. Freshman running back Emmett Johnson carried four times on the drive for 25 yards, while Haarberg capped a drive that featured three of his own runs for a total of 25 yards, with a three-yard touchdown plunge to put the Big Red on top for the first time at 10-6 with 23 seconds left in the half.

Johnson finished the day with a game-high 73 rushing yards on 12 carries, while Haarberg added 72 yards on 16 carries.

Northwestern tried to find an answer in short order, but Tommi Hill closed a strong defensive performance by the Blackshirts with his second interception of the season.

The defenses continued to dominate in a scoreless third quarter, before the Husker offense opened the fourth quarter with a short field. On Nebraska's first play from scrimmage in the period, Haarberg hit Coleman with the long touchdown strike in the middle of the end zone to give the Huskers a 17-6 lead.

Northwestern refused to quit, answering with a 66-yard pass from Brendan Sullivan to Bryce Kirtz. Malcolm Hartzog made a touchdown-saving tackle at the Northwestern 9, and the Blackshirts responded by keeping the Cats out of the end zone again. Olsen salvaged a 25-yard field goal to pull Northwestern within 17-9 with 11:09 left.

The Blackshirts did the rest, putting the exclamation point on the victory with a massive 16-yard sack by Jimari Butler and Ty Robinson at the Northwestern 14.

Defensive tackle Nash Hutmacher led a hard-hitting, aggressive Blackshirt defense with seven tackles, including 2.5 sacks. Isaac Gifford added seven stops of his own, including a highlight reel tackle on the edge through a pair of blockers on a Northwestern screen pass.

Princewill Umanmielen also secured seven tackles, including a pair for losses, while Butler and Luke Reimer each notched six tackles.

Nebraska returns to Memorial Stadium next Saturday to play host to Purdue. Kick-off with the Boilermakers in Lincoln is set for 2:30 p.m. with live television coverage on FS1.

Huskers shut down Wildcats 17-9

The Alliance Bulldogs had Western Conference rivals Gering on the ropes in the Class B Semifinals on Tuesday night in Scottsbluff, with Alliance leading 2-1 in sets and cruising early in the 4th set, but Gering stormed back to win the final two sets to win 3-2.&nbsp;

Gering started off fast by winning the first set 25-18, but Alliance battled back to win the 2nd 25-21 and the third 25-18 to get momentum in the match.

Alliance seemed in control early in the 4th before Gering went on a run to win the set 25-18. The momentum carried over to the 5th for Gering as they took the set 15-8 to win the match.

Jaelynne Clarke led all players with 26 kills unofficially for Alliance, Jacy Cochran had a team high 17 kills for Gering.

Alliance's record falls to 15-17 as they await to know if they qualified for a District Final on Saturday, or if their season is over. If Alliance sneaks in, they will more than likely play in the eastern part of the state in the Lincoln and Omaha area.

Gering played Scottsbluff in the Sub-District final and lost 3-0, they are 20-10 on the season entering the District Final.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska more than doubled its number of Big Ten wins last season to mark the biggest improvement in Fred Hoiberg's four years coaching the Cornhuskers. He expects the ascent to continue with a roster that ranks as the conference's oldest.

The Huskers went 16-16 for their first non-losing season since 2018-19 despite four rotation players missing time because of injuries. They were 12th in the Big Ten at 9-11 after they won six of their final eight regular-season games.

“Had we stayed healthy last year, I think we would have had a great chance to be an NCAA Tournament team,” Hoiberg said. “We had that grit, defensive mindset and identity, and we wanted to get that same group of guys in here this year. So far that's what I've seen."

The Huskers' roster includes eight players who are entering their fourth or fifth seasons as collegians and appeared in at least 62 games apiece. Three have at least 79 career starts each, and four have started at least 25.

“We've got more depth than any team we’ve had since we’ve been at Nebraska,” Hoiberg said, "and we have the size and verstaility to play a lot of combinations. We can play small, we can play big, we can play gigantic if we want to. When you look at the 3-point shooting of guys in our rotation, the majority are at 35% or better.

“When you have a team where you know what you're going to get, it makes your job easier and more enjoyable.”

Hoiberg's biggest offseason win came in May when 3-point shooting star Keisei Tominaga decided to return to Nebraska rather than enter the NBA draft. Tominaga averaged 13.1 points per game for the season and 20.3 as the Huskers won six of their last nine games. His 40.9% shooting from distance after he became a starter Jan. 18 was highest in the Big Ten among players who attempted at least six per game.

Over the summer he helped&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/basketball-world-cup-olympics-paris-1da4d6721440964b0aac1ea1464c3970">lead his native Japan to a spot in the 2024 Olympics</a>&nbsp;with his performance in the FIBA World Cup. He was among just five college players in the World Cup and the only one to average more than 10 points per game.

Juwan Gary started the Huskers' first 17 games and averaged 9.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and a team-high 1.4 steals per game before he sustained a season-ending injury in January.

C.J. Wilcher has played in every game the past two seasons. He had 24 starts last season and scored in double figures 10 times.

Jamarques Lawrence became a starter for the final 12 games and averaged 9.0 points per game in that stretch while shooting nearly 40 percent on 3s.

Derrick Walker, the leading scorer and rebounder last season, is the biggest departure. Sam Griesel and Emmanuel Bandoumel also were starters who graduated. Reserves Wilhelm Breidenbach (Washington), Denim Dawson (Tennessee State) and Oleg Kojenets (Wyoming) left via the transfer portal.

The Huskers added five transfers in guards Brice Williams (Charlotte), Ahron Ulis (Iowa) and Jarron Coleman (Ball State) and forwards Rienk Mast (Bradley) and Josiah Allick (New Mexico).

Williams averaged a team-high 13.8 points and 5.3 rebounds per game and shot 40% on 3s and was MVP of the College Basketball Invitational. Ulis was Iowa's starting point guard last season, and Coleman averaged 14.6 points per game last season and led the Cardinals in assists three of his four years.

Mast was an All-Missouri Valley Conference first-team pick last season after leading Bradley with 13.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game and nine double-doubles. Allick was second in the Mountain West last season with 7.3 rebounds per game.

Ulis was among the Iowa athletes found to have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iowa-sports-wagering-hawkeyes-cyclones-dc789365fa46dea091e2278b524fbba5">engaged in underage sports betting</a>&nbsp;in violation of state law and NCAA rules. He has been practicing, but his eligibility remains in question.

There are only two true freshmen on the roster, guard Eli Rice from IMG Academy by way of Gallatin, Tennessee, and forward Matar Diop from Keystone Athletic Academy (Pennsylvania) by way of Senegal.

Hoiberg hopes Tominaga's return and addition of veteran players allow Huskers to continue their rise

Alliance comes into the postseason tonight (Tuesday) with a 15-16 record as they look to clinch a spot in the District Final as they face 19-9 Gering at 4 pm. Alliance is currently ranked 13th in the RPI, and has played Gering six times this season, winning the last two meetings. Alliance Head Coach Manda Clarke says that both teams are evenly matched coming in.&nbsp;

"It could go either way, I feel like it's whoever shows up to play and minimizes their errors and plays aggressively will win the match."

Gering is led by Alex Gonzalez Orozco, one of the top liberos in the state who is 9th in Class B in digs. Freshman Jacy Cochran and Jaxie John are a force offensively, with Cochran 9th in Class B and John 13th.

Alliance will look to the leadership and fire power of all-time great Jaelynne Clarke, who enters tonight match 2nd in Class B in kills with 423 and is also 3rd in the state with digs with 510. Haylie Winter looks to provide leadership in the back row defensively from the libero position, while Kinley Pfeiffer aims to get the offense going from the setter position.

If the Bulldogs beat Gering, they will then play Scottsbluff at approximately 6 pm. HS Volleyball: Alliance faces familiar foe in Gering in Sub-Districts

DENVER (AP) — The end of Denver's dubious streak of blown halftime leads and the Broncos' first home victory under coach Sean Payton both came from the most unexpected of sources.

Backup safety P.J. Locke saved the Broncos from another second-half meltdown, intercepting Jordan Love's deep pass in the closing minutes to preserve a 19-17 win over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

Locke — subbing for safety Kareem Jackson, who was ejected for the second time this season following an illegal high hit earlier in the fourth quarter on tight end Luke Musgrave — picked off the throw intended for Samori Toure just after the two-minute warning.

“I saw the ball in their air, I was like, ‘It’s mine,'" the fourth-year pro out of Texas said of his first career interception, which came in his 50th NFL game, all as a reserve.

On the play,&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/MileHighReport/status/1716233342226399386?s=20">running back A.J. Dillon was wide open</a>&nbsp;for what would have been a big gain underneath, but Love was looking to go deep on third-and-20 from midfield.

The Broncos (2-5) then ran out the clock with Russell Wilson launching a deep heave on fourth-and-9 from his own 26 after taking the shotgun snap with 6 seconds remaining and the Packers (2-4) out of timeouts.

That gave Payton his first win at home in four tries and snapped the Broncos' streak of losing 10 consecutive games in which they'd taken a lead into halftime.

Payton wasn't a celebratory mood, saying, “We're never happy. You know, we work hard, we want it. ... I'm happy we won, I am. I think I was happier before I came in here” to the postgame news conference.

Payton said he's hopeful of much more meaningful milestones, and he bristled when asked about Denver finally making a halftime lead hold up.

"My team hadn't blown 10 straight," Payton said. “So, let's start by saying, ‘The Denver Broncos historically ...’"

When the reporter did just that, Payton cut him off: “Yeah, I don't pay attention to that.”

Three of those blown halftime leads came on Payton's watch, and the Broncos frittered away a 9-0 advantage at the midpoint Sunday before Wil Lutz's fourth field goal, from 52 yards out, with 3:50 remaining put Denver back in front for good.

The Packers quickly approached field-goal range for rookie kicker Anders Carlson, but after A.J. Dillon's 29-yard catch-and-run, things went sideways for Green Bay. Love was facing third-and-20 from his own 46 when his deep pass was picked off.

The Packers took a 17-16 lead on Love's 4-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Reed midway through the fourth quarter that went off Romeo Doubs' hands.

Doubs had pulled the Packers within 16-10 in the third quarter on a 16-yard touchdown catch that both he and cornerback Patrick Surtain II corralled as they tumbled to the ground.

On the broadcast, CBS rules expert Gene Steratore said he believed&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/NFL/status/1716221608929669400?s=20">the touchdown should have been ruled an interception</a>&nbsp;because Surtain had two feet down before Doubs did. Therefore, Steratore argued, Surtain had completed the catch before Doubs had done so.

“That makes me feel better,” Surtain said, “but at the end of the day it was still a touchdown.”

Payton concurred, saying, “I was surprised” it wasn't ruled an interception on the field or via the NFL's standard review of all scoring plays. “I think we're going to see that was something that should have been called the other way,” Payton said.

Refreee Alex Kemp, however, explained to a pool reporter, “We ruled on the field that the Green Bay receiver controlled the ball while airborne and came to the ground and never lost control of the ball and therefore, by rule, it is a touchdown.”

Kemp said simultaneous possession wasn't ruled on the field but even if it had been, the play still would have resulted in a touchdown.

NFL Senior Vice President of Officiating Walt Anderson said the TD call was confirmed at league headquarters in New York.

“And since the ruling on the field was a touchdown, we reviewed the play for the elements of a catch, which were control and maintaining control when he went to the ground, and then the receiver kept control of the ball,” Anderson said. "There were no views that showed that the receiver ever lost control of the ball from the time he initially possessed it until he completed the catch process on the ground.”

Locke's interception rendered it a moot point as far as the outcome was concerned.

Wilson rebounded from his worst game as a Bronco a week earlier to throw for 195 yards on 20-of-29 passing with one touchdown, a 18-yarder to Courtland Sutton that gave Denver a 16-3 lead.

Jackson, who’s been fined four times already for illegal hits and drew an ejection against Washington in Week 2, was DQ’d after hitting Musgrave in the head after his 18-yard catch along the Packers sideline early in the fourth quarter.

“I think one of the challenges for Kareem is he's got some priors,” Payton said. “So, you know, when you get pulled over and you've had four or five speeding violations, you're going to spend a little more time on the side of the road.”

Aaron Jones returned from a pulled hamstring and gained 58 yards on 11 touches, not nearly enough to kick-start Green Bay's stagnant offense.

During their last four games, the Packers have been outscored a combined 63-6 in the first half.

“We just lost to Denver,” cornerback Rasul Douglas said, his voice dripping with disgust. “Not saying they're terrible, but come on, we're supposed to win, man."

Four Packers were injured in the second quarter: DL Devonte Wyatt (knee), S Darnell Savage (calf), CB Eric Stokes (hamstring) and WR Jayden Reed (shin). Musgrave (ankle) left after the illegal hit by Jackson.
