The Chadron State men’s basketball team put up a fight, but fell a few points shy Saturday night while being edged by the Westminster Griffins in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference donnybrook in Salt Lake City.&nbsp; The final score was 76-73.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Eagles led most of the first half, twice by six points, but after being ahead 26-25 with about three minutes remaining, they were outscored 13-2 in the final four minutes of the half and trailed 37-27 at intermission.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Chadron State turnovers on three consecutive possessions ignited the Griffins’ rally.&nbsp; The game’s leading scorer, 6-foot-2 senior Taylor Miller, figured prominently in the surge. He was credited with steals on two of the turnovers, dunked the ball following the first and made two free throws following the second.&nbsp; He also made both free shots again later in the fateful run.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; After the Eagles finally ended their 3 ½-minute dry spell when Bryce Latimer hit a jumper to make the score 34-27 with 1:13 left in the half, Westminster played for a final shot and Jeremy DowDell obliged&nbsp; a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer to put the Griffins ahead by 10.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; As the second half opened, the Eagles fought back gallantly. Both Isaiah Wyatt and Jarrett Taylor immediately nailed treys and Wyatt hit another five minutes into the half to cut Westminster’s lead to 41-40. The Eagles were back in the game.

MBB: Eagles drop closely contested road game in Salt Lake City

The Westminster Griffins shot 58 percent from the field Saturday night while posting an 83-57 victory over Chadron State in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women’s basketball game played in Salt Lake City.&nbsp; 

The hot shooting was led by 6-foot-1 graduate student Lyndzi Rich, who connected on 13 of her 18 field goal attempts while pouring in 29 points.&nbsp; In addition, sophomore forward Jaycee Lichtie was six-of-nine from the field while scoring 15 points and senior guard Ashley Greenwood was five-of-six on her field goal shots and finished with 13 points. Greenwood also was the game’s top rebounder with 11.

Chadron State’s top scorer was redshirt freshman Claudia Dollinger, who totaled 16 points, half of them from the field on four-of-eight shooting and the other half by making eight of 13 free throws.&nbsp; Dollinger’s previous season high was 12 points.&nbsp;

Dollinger also was the Eagles’ top rebounder with seven, all of them off the offensive glass. CSC’s only other double-digit scorer was Samiyah Worrell with 11 points.

Also for CSC, point guard Kyra Tanabe added nine points and handed out a game-high six assists while playing 38 minutes.

Westminster led by just 36-29 at halftime, but was eight-of-10 from the field and also made seven of eight free throws while scoring 24 points in the third quarter and going ahead 60-47. The hosts then outscored the Eagles 23-10 in the fourth frame to wrap up the victory.

Chadron State shot 27.5% from the field for the game. Each team made four 3-pointers and 15 free throws.

Westminster is now 9-6 overall and 7-2 in the RMAC.&nbsp; The Eagles are 2-13 and 2-7.

Both Chadron State teams will be home this weekend to host Fort Lewis and Adams State.&nbsp;

&nbsp;The Colorado Mesa men shot just a bit better in all three phases of the offense on Friday night while taking a 73-60 verdict over Chadron State in Grand Junction.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Mavericks were 27-57 (47.5%) from the field compared to the Eagles’ 39.3% (25-61). They also were 12-of-20 from 3-point range while the visitors were 8-of-27 and the winners made seven of their nine free throws while the Eagles were four-of-nine.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Mesa also won the rebounding battle 37-28. Both teams had 11 turnovers.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Chadron State was ahead 13-9 after 6 ½ minutes had been played, but was outscored 10-0 in the next three minutes.&nbsp; The Mavericks went on take a 37-29 halftime lead.&nbsp;

While keeping Mesa from making a field goal for five minutes in the second half, the Eagles closed the gap to 46-45 with 10:43 to play, but could never quite take the lead.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Mesa was ahead by only 53-51 with 8 minutes remaining, but the Mavericks went on a 7-0 run and were ahead by at least 10 the final 3:22.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Five Mesa players scored in double figures led by Trevor Baskin and Isaac Jessup with 14 apiece, and three more added 10.&nbsp; Josh Robinson also posted 14 points for Chadron State and Isaac Wyatt scored 12.

The Colorado Mesa women’s basketball team had things in high gear as it rolled to a 76-31 victory over Chadron State during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game played in Grand Junction on Friday night.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Lady Mavericks were ahead 22-12 at the end of the first quarter and limited the Eagles to fewer than 10 points in each of the remaining three periods.&nbsp; Mesa shot 45.3% from the field, including 11 of 25 from behind the arc, and also made 17 of 19 free throws.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Chadron State never got its offense going, shooting just 19% from the field, made just one of 15 three-point shots and was only 10 of 21 at the free throw line.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Mesa is now 4-10 for the season and 3-5 in the RMAC.&nbsp; CSC is 2-12 and 2-6.

BY: CON MARSHALL&nbsp;The Colorado Mesa men shot just a bit better in all three phases of the offense on Friday night while taking a 73-60 verdict over Chadron State in Grand Junction.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Mavericks were 27-57 (47.5%) from the field compared to the Eagles’ 39.3% (25-61). They also were 12-of-20 from 3-point range while the visitors were 8-of-27 and the winners made seven of their nine free throws while the Eagles were four-of-nine.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Mesa also won the rebounding battle 37-28. Mesa sweeps CSC basketball Friday night

In the long history of Alliance High School Wrestling,&nbsp; Duane Dobson has been a Coach, Supporter and Friend for the last 52 years.&nbsp; In that time, Alliance has won 4 State Championships, had multiple&nbsp;individual state champions and medalists,&nbsp; and set several state records.&nbsp; 

The Bulldogs honored Duane for all he has done for the AHS Wrestling Program at Thursday night's home Dual with Chadron.&nbsp; Thanks to the Alliance Wrestling Club and generous donations from several local sponsors, the Bulldogs competed on a&nbsp; brand new mat,&nbsp; with "Coach Dobson"&nbsp;prominently printed on the top and bottom in bold letters.&nbsp;&nbsp;

AHS Head Coach Nick Myers says the Bulldog team plans to do tributes to Coach Dobson during each of the home Dual matches this season.&nbsp; At Thursday nights match, Coach Myers read&nbsp; "Duane Stories"&nbsp; by former AHS State Champ, Brian Wilson and former Head Coach Pat Cullen.&nbsp; The Bulldogs went on to win the Dual,&nbsp; 34-30, over Chadron in a very competitive match.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The next home Dual will be January 24, when the Bulldogs host Scottsbluff and Sidney and the final home match will be February 2 vs Torrington, Wy.&nbsp;

AHS Wrestling honors Dobson with a Victory on a new Mat

NEW YORK — The NFL has canceled the Bills and Bengals' week 17 game and announced their plans for playoff scenarios. 

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell informed all clubs of his decision on Thursday, after speaking with the Bills, the Bengals and NFL Players Association leadership.

“This has been a very difficult week,” Goodell said. “We continue to focus on the recovery of Damar Hamlin and are encouraged by the improvements in his condition as well as the tremendous outpouring of support and care for Damar and his family from across the country.  We are also incredibly appreciative of the amazing work of the medical personnel and commend each and every one of them.”

Canceling the game between the Bills and Bengals creates potential competitive inequities in certain playoff scenarios. The NFL says that in an effort to mitigate those "inequities," NFL clubs will consider Friday in a Special League Meeting a resolution recommended by the Commissioner and approved today by the Competition Committee, consisting of two elements: 

The AFC Championship Game will be played at a neutral site if the participating teams played an unequal number of games and both could have been the number one seed and hosted the game had all AFC clubs played a full 17-game regular season. Those circumstances involve Buffalo or Cincinnati qualifying for the game as a road team and are listed below:

Buffalo and Kansas City both win or both tie in week 18 – a Buffalo vs Kansas City championship game would be at a neutral site.

Buffalo and Kansas City both lose in week 18 and Baltimore wins or ties – a Buffalo vs Kansas City championship game would be at a neutral site.

Buffalo and Kansas City both lose in week 18 and Cincinnati wins – a Buffalo or Cincinnati vs Kansas City championship game would be at a neutral site.

If Baltimore defeats Cincinnati in Week 18 it will have defeated Cincinnati, a divisional opponent, twice but will not be able to host a playoff game because Cincinnati will have a higher winning percentage for a 16-game schedule than Baltimore will for a 17-game schedule. 

If Baltimore defeats Cincinnati and if those two clubs are scheduled to play a Wild Card game against one another, the site for that game would be determined by a coin toss. 

If Cincinnati wins the Week 18 game or if Baltimore and Cincinnati are not scheduled to play one another in the Wild Card round, the game sites would be determined by the regular scheduling procedures.

&nbsp; COLORADO SPRINGS -- January 3, 2023 --&nbsp;After winning eight of their last nine games to forge an 8-4 record and the four losses totaling just 11 points, things did not go well for the Chadron State College men's basketball team in game No. 13 Tuesday afternoon in Colorado Springs. In the first half, the Eagles shot just 25% (10-39) from the field and they scored only 23 points. Meanwhile, the host Colorado-Colorado Springs Mountains Lions shot 60% (15-25) and tallied 39 points. Chadron State shot nearly 40% (16-36) in the second half and posted 40 points. But the hosts hit almost 60% (17-29) again while putting up 52 points and coasted to a 91-63 victory. "We just didn't have it, it wasn't our night," CSC Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/shane-paben/551">Shane Paben</a>&nbsp;said afterwards. "We had no legs and never got going. They're a good team and played with lots of energy." The veteran coach didn't seem too dismayed. He has consistently expressed confidence in his team. &nbsp;Paben added that the Eagles "will have to regroup and recharge the battery" before they play at Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction on Friday night at Westminster in Salt Lake City on Saturday night. The Tuesday game was the third in four days for the Eagles and obviously it was one too many.&nbsp; CSC had edged Metro State 67-64 at home on Saturday and topped Regis 74-64 in Denver on Monday. The games this week had been rescheduled to make up for the pair that had to be postponed when the Eagles were snowbound in mid-December. Five players scored in double figures for the Mountain Lions, led by senior guard Jon'll Fugett with 17. He was seven-of-10 from the field, while 6-foot-9 senior William Becker was six-of-seven and finished with 13 points.&nbsp; Both grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. &nbsp; COLORADO SPRINGS -- January 3, 2023 --&nbsp;The second quarter proved to be the downfall for the Chadron State College women's basketball team Tuesday afternoon during a 72-66 loss to homestanding Colorado-Colorado Springs in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game. The Mountain Lions led by only 20-16 through the first period, but they outscored the Eagles 13-1 to open the second quarter.&nbsp; More than seven minutes had ticked off the clock before CSC made a field goal in second stanza.&nbsp; The drought helped Colorado Springs have a 37-26 halftime margin. The Lions led by as many as 17 points in the third quarter, but the Eagles never gave up and played better in the second half, when they scored 20 points in each period and outscored the hosts 40-35.&nbsp; CSC eventually got the difference down to five points with eight seconds remaining. Chadron State Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/coaches/janet-raymer/524">Janet Raymer</a>&nbsp;said she liked the way the Eagles kept working and didn't fade away, but noted that the second period slump was too much to overcome. The Eagles shot 32.2% from the field while UCCS shot 39%.&nbsp; Each team made four three-pointers, but shot less than 30% from afar. Both went to the free throw line 31 times, with the Eagles making 24, including 16-of-19 in the second half, while the Lions meshed 18 fouls shots, but only 10-of-21 in the final 20 minutes. Early slump dooms Eagles again in loss at UCCS

The win was the Eagles' eighth in their last nine games, and improved their RMAC record to 5-1. Four CSC players scored in double digits, led by&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/isaiah-wyatt/8518">Isaiah Wyatt</a>&nbsp;with 19 points to go with his game-high 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Chadron State wins 8th in last nine games at Regis Monday

&nbsp; DENVER -- January 2, 2023 --&nbsp;After the Chadron State women's basketball team took a 3-1 lead in the first 44 seconds when&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/samiyah-worrell/8407">Samiyah Worrell</a>&nbsp;sank a three-pointer, Regis went on a 14-point run during the ensuing four minutes and was ahead the rest of the way while winning a 74-63 decision over the Eagles in Denver on Monday afternoon. The stats show that the Lady Rangers did two things extra well to make a big difference.&nbsp; They made 10 of their 21 three-point shots and out-rebounded their guests 44-24. Five players—three from Regis and two from Chadron State--did most of the scoring. Josey Ryan tallied 19 points and Erin Fry and Sam Deem 17 for the Denver team while the one-two punch of Shay Powers, who finished with 22 points, and Worrell, who tallied 21, had 43 of the Eagles' 63 total. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Ryan was five-of-nine, Fry three-of-four and Deem two-of-four from behind the arc. Worrell connected on four-of-eight from long range.&nbsp; Morgan Smith scored just two points, but claimed 10 rebounds to lead the Rangers to their big bulge off the glass.&nbsp; Regis grabbed 15 offensive caroms that resulted in 14 second chance points. The Eagles scored two baskets off their four offensive rebounds. The Eagles, who had five turnovers while Regis was jumping out to its 15-3 lead, finally came out of their early funk and played pretty well the rest of the game. Besides her opening trey, Worrell buried two more in the first period, helping Chadron State cut the Regis lead to 23-15 at the end of the quarter. During the next three frames, the Rangers outscored the Eagles by only a 51-48 margin.&nbsp; But Regis always led from eight to 18 points in the second half. The Rangers are now 7-5 overall and 4-2 in the RMAC. Josey Ryan tallied 19 points and Erin Fry and Sam Deem 17 for the Denver team while the one-two punch of Shay Powers, who finished with 22 points, and Worrell, who tallied 21, had 43 of the Eagles' 63 total. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Ryan was five-of-nine, Fry three-of-four and Deem two-of-four from behind the arc. Worrell connected on four-of-eight from long range.&nbsp; Morgan Smith scored just two points, but claimed 10 rebounds to lead the Rangers to their big bulge off the glass.&nbsp; Regis grabbed 15 offensive caroms that resulted in 14 second chance points. The Eagles scored two baskets off their four offensive rebounds. The Eagles, who had five turnovers while Regis was jumping out to its 15-3 lead, finally came out of their early funk and played pretty well the rest of the game. Besides her opening trey, Worrell buried two more in the first period, helping Chadron State cut the Regis lead to 23-15 at the end of the quarter. During the next three frames, the Rangers outscored the Eagles by only a 51-48 margin.&nbsp; But Regis always led from eight to 18 points in the second half. The Rangers are now 7-5 overall and 4-2 in the RMAC. Regis' run early too much for Eagles to overcome Monday

&nbsp; CHADRON, Neb. – December 31, 2022 –&nbsp;The Chadron State College women's basketball team fell behind to MSU Denver in the first quarter, but trailed for a total of 39 seconds in the remaining 30 minutes of play, as it got its second Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win on Saturday afternoon in the Chicoine Center. The Eagles improve to 2-9 overall and 2-3 in the RMAC. MSU Denver fell to 4-8 (2-4 RMAC).&nbsp; The visiting Roadrunners led by nine at the 2:17 mark in the first quarter. However, the Eagles went on a 28-9 run to take a double-digit lead at 36-26 with 2:41 until halftime. CSC went into the locker room up 40-31 on a&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/samiyah-worrell/8407">Samiyah Worrell</a>&nbsp;layup at the second period buzzer. Coming out of the half, CSC freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/allison-olsen/8523">Allison Olsen</a>&nbsp;gave the Eagles their largest lead of the game with a layup just 14 seconds into the third period. The Roadrunners' only other lead was at 3:03 in the third. The game's leading scorer and rebounder,&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/ashayla-powers/4644">Ashayla Powers</a>, made a layup 27 seconds later to put the Eagles ahead for good. The Eagles improved dramatically in a couple of areas in which they struggled before the break. They were averaging nearly 17 turnovers per game over the first 10 games, and committed only 13 on Saturday. Also, the team which shot 25.6 percent from three-point range earlier in the season hit 6-for-23 from beyond the arc on Saturday, for an even 50 percent. CSC veterans Powers and Worrell starred for CSC. The former scored 26 points and had eight rebounds, while the latter went for 19 points and another eight boards. Both players scooped up two steals. Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/kadyn-comer/8395">Kadyn Comer</a>&nbsp;led the Eagles with six assists and three steals. For the Roadrunners, Mikylah Espinosa led with 24 points on 8-of-15 shooting and added a team-high six rebounds, to tie with teammate Brianna Sealy. Jaiden Galloway tied Comer for a game-high six assists. Both CSC basketball teams will travel to the Colorado Front Range almost immediately, to make up games rescheduled from the local blizzard two weeks prior, which rendered all Eagles teams unable to travel. Multiple reports out of Lincoln on Tuesday,&nbsp; say former Scottsbluff Bearcat and Cornhusker Team Captain Garrett Nelson, will not return for a fifth season at Nebraska.&nbsp; &nbsp;According to 10/11 Now,&nbsp; Nelson announced Tuesday,&nbsp; on twitter,&nbsp; that he will declare for the 2023 NFL Draft.&nbsp;

Nelson lead the Huskers with 9 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks, with&nbsp; a career high 65 tackles in 2022.&nbsp; &nbsp;He played in 43 games, making 32 straight starts in his 4 seasons at Nebraska. Nelson finishes with 26 tackles for loss, 12 sacks and 167 total tackles.&nbsp;

On his Twitter post Nelson said..." Ever since I was a little kid, my dream to attend the University of Nebraska, follow in my father's footsteps, and become a collegiate athlete, was a constant in my life".&nbsp; &nbsp;"Representing this University, the people of this state and my family was one of the highest honors I will have in my life."&nbsp; &nbsp;"I thank everyone who supported me and loved me along the way."&nbsp;

He went on to thank his Teammates, Coaches and Cornhusker fans.&nbsp; The 2023 NFL Draft will be April 27, 28 and 29, in Kansas City.

Scottsbluff Grad,  Garrett Nelson will skip final season at Nebraska

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos fired first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett on Monday with two games left in the season.

Owner and CEO Greg Penner said he'll lead the search for a new coach with assistance from GM George Paton, in whom he expressed confidence while announcing&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1607432324152426496?s=20&amp;t=ptRR7Kbi9InGOMA4jA3oYw">Hackett's dismissal</a>.

Firing Hackett with two games left in a lost season allows Penner to begin his search for a replacement immediately.

The Broncos scheduled a news conference for Tuesday, when they're expected to name their interim head coach for games at Kansas City next weekend and at home against the Chargers in Week 18.

The Walton-Penner group purchased the Broncos for $4.65 billion last summer, a global record for a professional sports franchise, and Rob Walton said after the league’s approval that he aimed to make the Broncos perennial championship contenders again.

On Sunday, the Broncos (4-11) were&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/denver-broncos-los-angeles-rams-sean-mcvay-nfl-sports-996b45d21f8886479127cf5af82199b6">blown out by the equally downtrodden Los Angeles Rams 51-14</a>&nbsp;when Russell Wilson threw three interceptions and was sacked six times. The game featured a sideline spat between backup QB Brett Rypien and guard Dalton Risner, and pass rusher Randy Gregory threw a punch at a Rams player after the game.

In a statement Monday, Penner thanked Hackett for his dedication but said that “following extensive conversations with George and our ownership group, we determined a new direction would ultimately be in the best interest of the Broncos. This change was made now out of respect for everyone involved and allows us to immediately begin the search for a new head coach.”

Penner said that “moving forward, we will carefully evaluate every aspect of our football operations and make whatever changes are necessary to restore this franchise’s winning tradition.”

Hackett replaced Vic Fangio last January but hasn’t been able to build an offense suitable to Wilson, who recently turned 34.

Hackett is the third NFL head coach fired during the 2022 season. The Carolina Panthers replaced Matt Rhule with interim head coach Steve Wilks and the Indianapolis Colts fired Frank Reich and replaced him with coaching novice Jeff Saturday.

Many fans thought the Broncos hired Hackett away from the Green Bay Packers, where he was offensive coordinator, to help them land quarterback Aaron Rodgers. But Rodgers decided to re-up with the Packers and the Broncos instead traded for Wilson, who was seen as still in his prime.

Wilson, however, has had an awful first season in Denver after the Broncos sent four premium draft picks and three players to Seattle for the nine-time Pro Bowler. Wilson has 12 touchdown passes with nine interceptions and 49 sacks in 13 starts and has been unable to snap out of a season-long funk.

He is 3-10 as Denver's starter and has missed games with a pulled hamstring and a concussion.

He routinely has ignored open receivers underneath to try for deep throws and he has shown a noticeable dip in his ability to escape from pass rushers this season.

The Broncos have missed the playoffs seven straight seasons and extended their string of losing records to six.

They will try to snap a 14-game losing streak to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday and beat Patrick Mahomes for the first time in 11 tries.

🏈 Broncos fire rookie head coach Hackett after 4-11 start

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Franco Harris, the Hall of Fame running back whose heads-up thinking authored “The Immaculate Reception,” considered the most iconic play in NFL history, has died. He was 72.

Harris' son Dok told The Associated Press his father passed away overnight. No cause of death was given.

His death comes two days before the 50th anniversary of the play that provided the jolt that helped transform the Steelers from also-rans into the NFL's elite and three days before Pittsburgh is scheduled to retire his No. 32 during a ceremony at halftime of its game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Harris ran for 12,120 yards and won four Super Bowl rings with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1970s, a dynasty that began in earnest when Harris decided to keep running during a last-second heave by Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw in a playoff game against Oakland in 1972.

With Pittsburgh trailing 7-6 and facing fourth-and-10 from their own 40 yard line and 22 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Bradshaw drifted back and threw deep to running back French Fuqua. Fuqua and Oakland defensive back Jack Tatum collided, sending the ball careening back toward midfield in the direction of Harris.

While nearly everyone else on the field stopped, Harris kept his legs churning, snatching the ball just inches above the Three Rivers Stadium turf near the Oakland 45 then outracing several stunned Raider defenders to give the Steelers their first playoff victory in the franchise's four-decade history.

“That play really represents our teams of the ’70s,” Harris said after the ”Immaculate Reception" was voted the greatest play in NFL history during the league's 100th anniversary season in 2020.

While the Steelers fell the next week to Miami in the AFC Championship, Pittsburgh was on its way to becoming the dominant team of the 1970s, twice winning back-to-back Super Bowls, first after the 1974 and 1975 seasons and again after the 1978 and 1979 seasons.

Harris, the 6-foot-2, 230-pound workhorse from Penn State, found himself in the center of it all. He churned for a then-record 158 yards rushing and a touchdown in Pittsburgh's 16-6 victory over Minnesota in Super Bowl IX on his way to winning the game's Most Valuable Player award. He scored at least once in three of the four Super Bowls he played in, and his 354 career yards rushing on the NFL's biggest stage remains a record nearly four decades after his retirement.

Born in Fort Dix, New Jersey, on March 7, 1950, Harris played collegiately at Penn State, where his primary job was to open holes for backfield mate Lydell Mitchell. The Steelers, in the final stages of a rebuild led by Hall of Fame coach Chuck Noll, saw enough in Harris to make him the 13th overall pick in the 1972 draft.

“When (Noll) drafted Franco Harris, he gave the offense heart, he gave it discipline, he gave it desire, he gave it the ability to win a championship in Pittsburgh,” Steelers Hall of Fame wide receiver Lynn Swann said of his frequent roommate on team road trips.

Harris' impact was immediate. He won the NFL's Rookie to the Year award in 1972 after rushing for a then-team-rookie record 1,055 yards and 10 touchdowns as the Steelers reached the postseason for just the second time in franchise history.

The city's large Italian-American population embraced Harris immediately, led by two local businessmen who founded what became known as “Franco's Italian Army,” a nod to Harris' roots as the son of an African-American father and an Italian mother.

The “Immaculate Reception” made Harris a star, though he typically preferred to let his play and not his mouth do the talking. On a team that featured big personalities in Bradshaw, defensive tackle Joe Greene, linebacker Jack Lambert among others, the intensely quiet Harris spent 12 seasons as the engine that helped Pittsburgh's offense go.

Eight times he topped 1,000 yards rushing in a season, including five times while playing a 14-game schedule. He piled up another 1,556 yards rushing and 16 rushing touchdowns in the playoffs, both second all-time behind Smith.

Despite his gaudy numbers, Harris stressed he was just one cog in an extraordinary machine that redefined greatness.

“You see, during that era, each player brought their own little piece with them to make that wonderful decade happen,” Harris said during his Hall of Fame speech in 1990. “Each player had their strengths and weaknesses, each their own thinking, each their own method, just each, each had their own. But then it was amazing, it all came together, and it stayed together to forge the greatest team of all times.”

Harris also made it a habit to stick up for his teammates. When Bradshaw took what Harris felt was an illegal late hit from Dallas linebacker Thomas “Hollywood” Henderson in the second half of their meeting in the 1978 Super Bowl, Harris basically demanded Bradshaw give him the ball on the next play. All Harris did was sprint up the middle 22 yards — right by Henderson — for a touchdown that gave the Steelers an 11-point lead they would not relinquish on their way to their third championship in six years.

Despite all of his success, his time in Pittsburgh ended acrimoniously when the Steelers cut him after he held out during training camp before the 1984 season. Noll, who leaned on Harris so heavily for so long, famously answered “Franco who?” when asked about Harris' absence from the team's camp at Saint Vincent College.

Harris signed with Seattle, running for just 170 yards in eight games before being released in midseason. He retired as the NFL's third all-time leading rusher behind Walter Payton and Jim Brown.

"I don’t even think about that (anymore),” Harris said in 2006. “I’m still black and gold.”

Harris remained in Pittsburgh following his retirement, opening a bakery and becoming heavily involved in several charities, including serving as the chairman of “Pittsburgh Promise," which provides college scholarship opportunities for Pittsburgh Public School students.

Harris is survived by his wife Dana Dokmanovich and his son, Dok.

On a team that featured big personalities in Bradshaw, defensive tackle Joe Greene, linebacker Jack Lambert among others, the intensely quiet Harris spent 12 seasons as the engine that helped Pittsburgh's offense go.Eight times he topped 1,000 yards rushing in a season, including five times while playing a 14-game schedule. He piled up another 1,556 yards rushing and 16 rushing touchdowns in the playoffs, both second all-time behind Smith.Despite his gaudy numbers, Harris stressed he was just one cog in an extraordinary machine that redefined greatness.“You see, during that era, each player brought their own little piece with them to make that wonderful decade happen,” Harris said during his Hall of Fame speech in 1990. “Each player had their strengths and weaknesses, each their own thinking, each their own method, just each, each had their own. But then it was amazing, it all came together, and it stayed together to forge the greatest team of all times.”Harris also made it a habit to stick up for his teammates. When Bradshaw took what Harris felt was an illegal late hit from Dallas linebacker Thomas “Hollywood” Henderson in the second half of their meeting in the 1978 Super Bowl, Harris basically demanded Bradshaw give him the ball on the next play. All Harris did was sprint up the middle 22 yards — right by Henderson — for a touchdown that gave the Steelers an 11-point lead they would not relinquish on their way to their third championship in six years.Despite all of his success, his time in Pittsburgh ended acrimoniously when the Steelers cut him after he held out during training camp before the 1984 season. Noll, who leaned on Harris so heavily for so long, famously answered “Franco who?” when asked about Harris' absence from the team's camp at Saint Vincent College.Harris signed with Seattle, running for just 170 yards in eight games before being released in midseason. He retired as the NFL's third all-time leading rusher behind Walter Payton and Jim Brown."I don’t even think about that (anymore),” Harris said in 2006. “I’m still black and gold.”Harris remained in Pittsburgh following his retirement, opening a bakery and becoming heavily involved in several charities, including serving as the chairman of “Pittsburgh Promise," which provides college scholarship opportunities for Pittsburgh Public School students.Harris is survived by his wife Dana Dokmanovich and his son, Dok.

DENVER (AP) — Backup quarterback Brett Rypien led the Denver Broncos to their first win since October.

His reward: A seat back on the bench. This is, after all, Russell Wilson's show and he'll be back under center next week.

Rypien&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1604622521109581824">made the most of his third career start</a>&nbsp;as he overcame relentless pressure from a J.J. Watt-led Arizona defense to help the Broncos hold off the Cardinals 24-15 on Sunday.

“Really, the whole goal is just to try to find a way to win and to do that I just feel like we accomplished something great,” Rypien said. “It’s awesome.”

The game featured two backup QBs, but Arizona lost Colt McCoy&nbsp;<a href="http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=35281712">to a concussion early</a>&nbsp;in the third quarter after he hit his head while diving for a first down. McCoy was intercepted once and his replacement, Trace McSorley, threw two more picks. McCoy will enter the league's concussion protocol.

“It’s tough," McSorley said. “You never want to see someone go down.”

Rypien was sacked seven times, including three by Watt, but directed three second-half scoring drives to help the Broncos (4-10) snap a five-game losing streak.

Latavius Murray ran for 130 yards&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1604620494421966848">and a touchdown</a>, Marlon Mack also had a rushing TD, and Rypien threw a short scoring pass — after a well-disguised fake — to Eric Tomlinson as Denver turned a 9-3 deficit into a 24-9 lead.

The Denver defense was led by Justin Simmons, who had two interceptions and helped hold the Cardinals to 2 of 12 on third downs.

“We’ve been in so many games against a bunch of very good football teams. We had another choice today," first-year Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett said. “We were down 9-3 and those guys had another choice. They stepped up.”

Subbing for Wilson, who was held out for safety reasons after clearing the concussion protocol, Rypien had 197 yards passing and one interception. McCoy took over for Kyler Murray, who's out for the season with a torn ACL. McCoy was 13 of 21 for 78 yards and was picked off by Simmons late in the first quarter.

The Cardinals managed three early field goals by former Bronco Matt Prater. James Conner had a late TD run but a 2-point pass was broken up. The Cardinals (4-10) have dropped four straight and were eliminated from playoff contention.

“It sucks,” Watt said. “You’re playing for the future and it’s a (expletive) place to be with three games left. But that’s what it is."

Added Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury: "They continue to show up and play hard. That’s all you can ask.”
