B-6 District Track Results & State Qualifiers

ESPN announced Tuesday afternoon that Nebraska’s season-opening matchup with Cincinnati in Kansas City on Thursday, Aug. 28, will be televised on ESPN with kickoff set for 8 p.m. Central.&nbsp;

The Huskers and Bearcats will square off at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, Nebraska’s first contest in the stadium since the 2006 Big 12 Championship game and NU’s first regular-season game in Kansas City since 1998. The matchup was originally scheduled as a Cincinnati home game before being moved to a neutral site. It marks just the second all-time meeting between the schools and the first since a 1906 matchup in Lincoln.

The matchup with Cincinnati in Kansas City marks Nebraska’s second neutral-site opener in four seasons after opening the 2022 season against Northwestern in Dublin, Ireland.&nbsp; It also marks the fourth time in the past five seasons Nebraska has opened the season either in Week Zero or on a Thursday night. Nebraska opened the 2023 season at Minnesota in a Thursday night contest.

Tuesday’s announcement is the first kickoff time set for the Huskers’ 2025 season. Additional game times and television designations for the upcoming season are expected to be announced by the end of May.

Tickets for the Cincinnati game are only available through Ticketmaster.com. Fans interested in ordering 2025 Husker football season tickets can join the Season Ticket Request list by visiting Huskers.com/tickets.&nbsp;

 The Chadron State College track and field team had another good day Saturday while competing at the Nebraska-Kearney Twilight Meet, which gave dozens of college athletes a final chance to improve their marks and qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championships that will take place May 22-24 at Pueblo, Colorado.

CSC freshman Trace Hanchett of Phillipsburg, Kansas, took advantage of the opportunity.

Already the Eagles’ record-holder in the javelin, Hanchett sailed the spear 65.60 meters, or 219 feet, 7 inches, to solidify his qualification. His previous best mark of 215 feet, 3 inches put him 20th on the national list, but the 4 feet, 4 inches improvement Saturday moved him up to 13th place.

The 22 athletes with the best marks in each individual event are the national qualifiers. The qualifiers will be officially declared early this coming week.

Hanchett will be among Chadron State’s three national qualifiers.  The others are sophomore Chayton Bynes in the triple jump and senior Nicquaine Henry of Kingston, Jamaica, in the 400-meter hurdles.

All three broke school records this season while securing their national credentials. 

Bynes has been high on the national chart ever since he became CSC’s first 50-foot triple jumper outdoors when went 15.54 meters, or 51 feet even, during a meet at Fort Collins in late March.

The former record of 49-8 ½ was set by Isaac Grimes in 2018;

  As of Saturday night, Bynes was eighth on the DII chart, but CSC Coach Jake Gruver said he had learned that a couple of triple jumpers in California exceeded 51 feet this weekend and the Eagles’ standout likely will be 10th or 11th after the updating takes place.

Henry earned his national meet qualification Friday during the Concordia Last Chance Meet in Seward, where he won the 400 hurdles in 51.56 seconds. At last report he was 17th nationally. His time Friday broke the CSC record of 52.39 seconds that was set by Gavin Archibald in 2014.

CSC freshman qualifies for NCAA Nationals in javelin throw

Coaches for this summer's upcoming West Nebraska All-Star football game and volleyball match have been chosen.

Garden County's Chad Dormann is the West team football head coach with Scot Anderson from Sidney, Ian Bish of Valentine and Trevor Ginkens from Hay Springs assisting. Dustin Kronhofman of Arapahoe is leading the East team with assistants coming from Cozad (Jayce Dueland), Brady (Andy Seaman) and Arapahoe (John Strand).

For the volleyball match, Natasha Haupt of Leyton leads the West squad with assistant help from Chase County's Kristi McNair.&nbsp; Rebecca Stearns of Brady is the East head coach and Maddy Krebs from North Platte St. Pat's will join her on the bench.

The football all-star game and volleyball match are both set for June 7 in Scottsbluff.&nbsp; Volleyball serves at 3:00 on the WNCC campus in Cougar Palace following the football game that begins with kickoff at 11:00 a.m. in Bearcat Stadium on the Scottsbluff High School campus.

West Nebraska All-Star football, volleyball coaches revealed

CHADRON, Neb. – Travis Brewster has resigned his position as the Head Women's Basketball Coach at Chadron State College, Athletic Director Mannie Reinsch announced Tuesday. 

Brewster, who had previous head coaching experience at the University of North Dakota (DI) and Saint Xavier University (NAIA), winning Coach of the Year awards at both stops, has guided the CSC's women's basketball program since the 2023-24 season. 

During his two seasons on the sidelines for the Eagles, his teams posted identical records of 6-20. This past season, Chadron State played the hardest non-conference schedule (by final opponent winning percentage) in Division II, then secured a 12th-place RMAC finish that was the program's highest place in the league standings since 2016-17. 

The 2024-25 Eagle women's basketball team also set the program record for highest team free-throw percentage in school history (77.7 percent) and made more three-pointers (165, 6.3 per game) than any Eagle team since 2010. 

Brewster's teams excelled academically, highlighted recently when eight CSC women's basketball players were named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Academic Honor Roll. 

"I would like to thank Coach Brewster for his dedication and efforts to Chadron State. I wish Coach Brewster and his family the best moving forward," Reinsch said. 

Brewster was the 11th coach in women's basketball history at Chadron State College since the program began in 1973. 

A national search for Chadron State's new women's basketball coach will begin immediately.

CHADRON, Neb. – Chadron State softball sent off its seniors in style with two wins over Adams State, marking Senior Day and ending the 2025 season with 9-1 and 7-3 wins over the Grizzlies.

Sophia Brennan hit a three-run home run in game one to help CSC end it in five innings, then Angelina Quezada, one of eight seniors honored on the day, tied a career-high with three RBI in the second game. In addition, senior pitchers Tori Haug and Kenzi Garner closed out their careers with complete-game victories. 

Chadron State ends its season with a 22-28 record, including an 18-26 mark in the RMAC. The Eagles finished the year strong, ending on a five-game win streak and coming out on top in 10 of their last 14 contests. The Eagles ultimately finished in ninth place in the league standings but were closer in the standings to the fourth-place team than they were to the 10th-place team. 

Just like yesterday, Chadron State set the tone with a four-run first inning in game one of the doubleheader. The Eagles went station-to-station, with two singles and a walk loading the bases before an RBI single from Ashland Baca, a bases-loaded walk to Kenzi Garner, and run-scoring errors off the bat of Brennan and Sydney Loyet which produced two more runs. 

The Eagles manufactured two more runs in the third inning, scoring on a Loyet fielder's choice plus a Jazlyn Arvizo single. In the fourth, CSC put themselves in run-rule distance after singles from Lauren Zimmerman and Brogan Allen brought Sophia Brennan to the plate with one out. Brennan went with an outside pitch, driving an opposite field home run to right-center to put CSC up 9-0 and score Allen and pinch-runner Destrie Greiman. 

In Tori Haug's five innings of work in the circle, the senior righty pounded the zone, striking out seven while not walking a batter. Haug scattered four hits and only allowed one run on a solo homer in the fifth and final inning. She needed only 69 pitches and 19 batters to get through five innings. With the win, Haug finishes the season 10-14. 

After an emotional Senior Day ceremony between games, the Eagles fell behind the eight-ball early in game two, as Adams State scored once in the first and twice in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. 

Chadron State turned the tide with a four-run fifth inning. Two walks set the stage for an RBI single from Quezada to bring the Eagles within a run. Lauren Zimmerman hit a hot shot off the third baseman's glove to score the tying run, before an Ashland Baca single and Kenzi Garner sac fly gave the Eagles the lead plus insurance. 

CSC added on in the sixth. With two outs, J'lyssa Martinez rocketed a double into the left-center field to place runners on second and third. Quezada came through again, singling through the left side to score both and make it 7-3. 

Despite the early runs, Kenzi Garner pitched a complete game to earn her eighth win of the season. Garner scattered nine hits but limited the damage to just three runs while walking one and striking out two. 

Like yesterday, all eight of CSC's seniors – Loyet, Quezada, Haug, Garner, Martinez, Zimmerman, Kendall Petty and Baca – were in the lineup for both games. Haug had another turn as a left fielder and two more at-bats, collecting a hit and a walk. Haug ends her CSC career at the plate with a perfect 1.000 batting average (2-for-2 with two walks plus a sacrifice fly). 

The games Saturday were also the last in the dugout for Chadron State Interim Head Coach Dr. Rob Stack, who previously coached the Eagles from 2008-2017 and took the reins again on an interim basis for the 2025 season. Dr. Stack will focus on his ongoing job as a math professor at CSC as the Eagles continue their search for a new permanent softball coach.

The Eagles manufactured two more runs in the third inning, scoring on a Loyet fielder's choice plus a Jazlyn Arvizo single. In the fourth, CSC put themselves in run-rule distance after singles from Lauren Zimmerman and Brogan Allen brought Sophia Brennan to the plate with one out. Brennan went with an outside pitch, driving an opposite field home run to right-center to put CSC up 9-0 and score Allen and pinch-runner Destrie Greiman. In Tori Haug's five innings of work in the circle, the senior righty pounded the zone, striking out seven while not walking a batter. Haug scattered four hits and only allowed one run on a solo homer in the fifth and final inning. She needed only 69 pitches and 19 batters to get through five innings. With the win, Haug finishes the season 10-14. After an emotional Senior Day ceremony between games, the Eagles fell behind the eight-ball early in game two, as Adams State scored once in the first and twice in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Chadron State turned the tide with a four-run fifth inning. Two walks set the stage for an RBI single from Quezada to bring the Eagles within a run. Lauren Zimmerman hit a hot shot off the third baseman's glove to score the tying run, before an Ashland Baca single and Kenzi Garner sac fly gave the Eagles the lead plus insurance. CSC added on in the sixth. With two outs, J'lyssa Martinez rocketed a double into the left-center field to place runners on second and third. Quezada came through again, singling through the left side to score both and make it 7-3. Despite the early runs, Kenzi Garner pitched a complete game to earn her eighth win of the season. Garner scattered nine hits but limited the damage to just three runs while walking one and striking out two. Like yesterday, all eight of CSC's seniors – Loyet, Quezada, Haug, Garner, Martinez, Zimmerman, Kendall Petty and Baca – were in the lineup for both games. Haug had another turn as a left fielder and two more at-bats, collecting a hit and a walk. Haug ends her CSC career at the plate with a perfect 1.000 batting average (2-for-2 with two walks plus a sacrifice fly). The games Saturday were also the last in the dugout for Chadron State Interim Head Coach Dr. Rob Stack, who previously coached the Eagles from 2008-2017 and took the reins again on an interim basis for the 2025 season. Dr. Stack will focus on his ongoing job as a math professor at CSC as the Eagles continue their search for a new permanent softball coach.

CSC softball caps season with sweep of Adams State & five-game win streak

  While it was not a great weekend for Chadron State College contestants at the final rodeo of the season in the Central Rocky Mountain Region hosted by the University of Wyoming, two CSC seniors who had previously built up enough points have qualified for the College Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo., in June.

              They are breakaway roper Brooke McCully of Mullen and tie down roper Jake Chasek of Mitchell.  They will be CSC’s first representatives at the national rodeo since 2021, when the entire women’s team qualified and Brianna Williams of Buffalo, S.D., placed fourth in breakaway roping.

              McCully finished as the runner-up in this year’s regional breakaway standings while Chasek tied for third and fourth in the tie down competition. Normally, just the top three in each event are eligible to advance to nationals.  But CSC Rodeo Coach Lane Day said since Chasek and Cory Bomhoff of Laramie County Community College at Cheyenne each finished with 495 points to share third in the regional standings, both are qualifiers.   

              Dalton Porch of Gillette College is the tie down regional winner with 815 points and Tate Talkington of Northeastern Junior College at Sterling, Colo., is the runner-up with 710.

              Chasek did not score at the UW rodeo because he broke the barrier in the long go-round.  However, at the Casper College rodeo two weeks ago, he won the tie down title to earn 135 points, just enough, as it turned out, to forge the tie for third and earn the right to return to Casper June 15-21.

              McCully finished the regional breakaway standings with 456 points to claim second for the season in an event that had nearly 100 contestants at all 10 rodeos.  She tallied a bulk of her points last fall when she was the breakaway winner at two rodeos and placed second at a third.

              McCully caught her calf in 2.2 seconds in the first go-round a Laramie this past weekend, but failed to catch the calf in the finals on Sunday. The regional winner is Landry Haugen with 489.33 points.  Jordyn McNance is the third CFR qualifier with 400.  Both are from the University of Wyoming.

              Chadron State freshman Mejrusa Rustemovic of Kiowa, Colo., made a strong bid to qualify for the national finals in the barrel race. She and her gray gelding, Player, placed among the top six in the barrels at five of the 10 rodeos during the year. They won first twice and were second once. They tallied 520 points, but it left them in fourth place, 50 points shy of making the top three.

              Last weekend, Rustemovic was 12th among the 95 entries in the long go-round at the UW rodeo in 15 seconds flat.  It was only 12 hundredths of a second shy of making the top 10 and advancing to the finals. 

              The region’s barrel racing winner is Emme Norsworthy of the University of Wyoming with 630 points, including 180 at her home rodeo last weekend while winning both go-rounds and moving from sixth in the regional standings to the top spot.  Ashlyn Goven of Gillette College is second with 620 points and another UW cowgirl, Rayne Grant, is third with 570.

One of Chadron State’s highest placers this past weekend was senior Elle Ravenscroft of Cody, Neb, who was fifth in breakaway roping with times of 2.2 and 3.3 seconds. 

              Two CSC bareback riders from Nebraska, Tanner Olsen of Gordon and Cinch Kiger of Overton, placed fifth and seventh, respectively, in that event. Olsen scored 73 and 75 points on his broncs while Kiger earned 72 and 74 points.  Also, Rex Day of Bartlett, Neb., tied for sixth in steer wrestling after completing his runs in 4.9 and 9.5 seconds

CHADRON, Neb. – Chadron State football's 2025 spring game will be open to the public on Friday at 5 p.m. at Elliott Field, featuring multiple free opportunities to win prizes and purchase game-worn CSC apparel. 

The start time of 5 p.m. is an hour earlier than previously announced, with the event taking place slightly earlier in the evening due to weather forecasts. 

All fans who attend the spring game will be entered, free of charge, into a raffle to win a grand prize of two season tickets to the Eagles for the 2025 season. 

School-age children and Chadron State College students in attendance will have the opportunity to be selected to come onto the field during Friday's activities and attempt to catch either a pass or a punt from a CSC football player to win a prize. 

Also, for Eagle super-fans, Chadron State's game-worn gray jerseys from the 2024 season will be available for purchase at the spring game. Jerseys can be bought for $150. Any CSC student-athletes or recent Eagle football alumni wishing to buy their own game-used jerseys will be charged a rate of $130 to purchase. 

Unlike in past years, the 2025 spring game will not feature another school as an opponent and will not be played like a timed, continuous game. The new format allows Eagle student-athletes to showcase and compete against one another with the goal of maintaining depth, avoiding injuries and involving other CSC students and community members in the day's festivities. 

The football portion of the spring game will feature different matchups (first/second team offense vs. first/second team defense, for example) playing out a series from a certain spot on the field. The "mini-games" featuring kids, students and community members will take place between some of the matchups, including an on-field "punt, pass and kick" competition among CSC football players.

CSC football spring game is open to public Friday night

Ogallala, Ne - Brent Bauer, the head football coach at Ogallala High School since 2017, is heading to Alliance to become the new Athletic Director and Assistant High School Principal. 

Bauer made the move public on social media Monday. Bauer a Pleasanton native just celebrated his 25th year in coaching. He said, "

We can’t wait to get started as the Activities Director and Assistant Principal at Alliance High School!  Wendy and I are so excited to get the opportunity to work with the coaches, sponsors, school and community of Alliance!  Just as we did at Ogallala, we will give Alliance all we have.  Huge thank you to the administration at Alliance along with the coaches, staff and faculty that have taken time to introduce themselves and express their excitement for the future of Alliance High School.  Our excitement matches theirs!"

Bauer replaces Alliance Athletic Director Michael Baker. Baker has accepted the same position at Lincoln Lutheran High School. Baker spoke to the POST and said, "Alliance was a great place for me to teach and&nbsp;coach basketball for 22 years and then return to serve as AD for these last&nbsp;two years.&nbsp; My wife and I leave with many memories we will always cherish.&nbsp; But more importantly, Alliance Public Schools provided our three children everything they needed to be prepared for success in college."

CHADRON, Neb. – Lauren Zimmerman finished with an RBI in each game to become Chadron State's all-time program RBI leader as Chadron State took three of four games in the series against Fort Lewis, splitting the two games on the day with an 8-1 victory followed by a 10-2 loss. 

Tori Haug continued her impressive pitching on the weekend, allowing one run on five hits in seven innings for her second victory of the series after a five-inning shutout the day before. Aside from Zimmerman, Ashland Baca and J'lyssa Martinez also drove in two runs apiece on the day. 

Chadron State's record now sits at 17-25 overall with a 13-23 record in the RMAC. Fort Lewis sits at 9-31 overall and 8-27 in the RMAC after Sunday's split. 

The Eagles continued their momentum from a dominant Saturday that saw CSC outscore Fort Lewis 10-0 over the first doubleheader of the series. Chadron State exploded for a five-run second inning that set the home team on its way to win its third straight in game one of Sunday's action. 

Freshman Skyhawk starter Addison Gavigan lost the strike zone, with four walks to Brogan Allen, Sophia Brennan, Angelina Quezada and Elizabeth Thorngren plus a wild pitch putting the Eagles on the board. Gavigan recovered with a strikeout and a sacrifice fly from Jazlyn Arvizo, which made it 2-0 CSC but also put a second out on the board. 

Then, it was Zimmerman's moment. The senior third baseman doubled to the left-center field gap, scoring Quezada standing up. It was Zimmerman's eighth double and 39th RBI of the season, and it gave her 140 RBI for her career, passing alum Allison Hendricksen for first on CSC's all-time lists. 

Ashland Baca continued the inning with another double to straightaway center that just missed going over the fence, scoring Thorngren and Zimmerman to run CSC's lead up to 5-0. 

Fort Lewis got on the board in the fourth on back-to-back doubles, but Haug recovered to end the inning with the help of a line-drive double-play from third baseman Zimmerman to second baseman Arvizo. 

The Eagles answered in the bottom of the frame with a two-out rally, as Arivzo singled before Zimmerman and Baca walked to load the bases and J'lyssa Martinez came through with an opposite-field double down the left field line to score two runs and make it 7-1. Kenzi Garner, pinch-hitting at the plate before her game two start in the circle, went yard to left center for her second home run of the year to cap the CSC scoring. 

For as many things went right for the Eagles in the first three games of the series, everything seemed to unravel in game four. Garner allowed five runs on six hits in three-plus innings, Chadron State made five errors defensively and Fort Lewis hit three home runs in the fourth and fifth innings to end the series finale by run rule in the minimum five innings. 

Zimmerman added to her RBI total by scoring Arvizo, who had doubled to lead off the bottom of the first, with a one-out single. Zimmerman's program-record career RBI total now sits at 141 and counting. The Eagles got their other run on the day on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Elizabeth Thorngren. 

Chadron State now hits the road to face Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction next Friday and Saturday. The Mavericks (31-11, 29-7 RMAC) are in the RMAC title hunt and lead by half a game over MSU Denver and a full game over Colorado Christian, who CMU just split a four-game series with. First pitch Friday is set for 12 p.m.

Zimmerman's program-record career RBI total now sits at 141 and counting. The Eagles got their other run on the day on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Elizabeth Thorngren. Chadron State now hits the road to face Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction next Friday and Saturday. The Mavericks (31-11, 29-7 RMAC) are in the RMAC title hunt and lead by half a game over MSU Denver and a full game over Colorado Christian, who CMU just split a four-game series with. CHADRON, Neb. – The 2025 Eagle Athletic Auction fundraiser and 2025 Don Beebe Golf Classic will officially take place this Memorial Day weekend from Friday, May 23 through Sunday, May 25. 

The weekend serves as an opportunity for Chadron alumni, supporters and community members to hear from CSC coaches, student-athletes and athletic administration in a variety of social settings. Registration is now open.

The weekend of festivities will begin with the Eagle Athletic Auction on Friday night. From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Elliott Field at Don Beebe Stadium will host a social featuring registration and games, including a chip-in golf event. 

The auction program includes dinner at 6 p.m. and both silent and live auction items, including branded apparel, golf trips, handmade local items, outings to local attractions and experiences with Chadron State teams and coaches. 

Individual entry tickets for the auction are $50, or $25 when combined with the purchase of a Don Beebe Golf Classic entry. Dinner is provided and included in the ticket price. Another option is to purchase a table for $500, where eight guests will be joined by two CSC coaches or student-athletes. Table pricing includes two drink tickets per seat. 

The 2025 Don Beebe Golf Classic at Ridgeview Golf Club presented by Monument Health will take place on Saturday and Sunday. There will be two flights, both with shotgun starts, and various hole prizes. The morning flight will tee off starting at 7 a.m. while the afternoon flight will begin at 1:30 p.m.

There will also be a social at The Ridge in downtown Chadron on Saturday night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Awards presentations will take place for the morning flight at noon and at 6 p.m. for the afternoon flight on Sunday.

Registration prices are $200 for an individual and $800 for a full four-golfer team. There are limited team slots available, so teams are encouraged to register as soon as possible to lock down a spot. Competing golfers can also purchase discounted Eagle Athletic Auction tickets for $25 instead of the non-golfer rate of $50.

Registration open for CSC's annual Don Beebe Classic golf tournament

Lincoln, NE - The home of Nebraska Volleyball will now officially bear the name of one of the legendary coaches in the history of the sport, as the University of Nebraska Board of Regents on Friday approved the naming of John Cook Arena at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Cook retired in January following a remarkable 25-year run as the Huskers’ head coach. He guided the Huskers to four national championships, 12 NCAA Semifinal appearances and 14 conference championships. Cook achieved a career record of 883-176 (.834), the fifth-best winning percentage all-time for a Division I volleyball coach. His record of 722-103 at Nebraska is the best winning percentage (.875) for any DI program over the last 25 years.

The success of Nebraska Volleyball under Cook extended off the court to record-setting attendance. Since moving home matches to the Devaney Center in 2013, Nebraska has led the nation in attendance every season in the 8,309-seat venue which will now be named to honor Cook’s accomplishments.

In addition to the naming of John Cook Arena, the project also includes a bronze statue honoring Cook on the north side of the Devaney Sports Center. Nationally recognized sculpture artist and Nebraska native George Lundeen has been commissioned to produce the life-size tribute to Cook and his career.

“John’s success as the leader of our volleyball program is unmatched,” Nebraska Director of Athletics Troy Dannen said. “His impact goes beyond what his teams accomplished on the court, from our athletic department, our university, community and state of Nebraska. To recognize John in a manner that will be visible for generations to come is a fitting honor.”

The court inside John Cook Arena will continue to hold the name of Terry Pettit Court to recognize Cook’s predecessor and fellow Hall of Famer. Additionally, the full athletics complex will continue to be named the Bob Devaney Sports Center in honor of Nebraska Hall of Fame football coach and long-time athletic director Bob Devaney.

"This is an incredible honor. I am truly humbled by all of it,” Cook said. “I am so grateful to Troy, the entire Nebraska administration and the Board of Regents for this recognition. The Bob Devaney Sports Center and Terry Pettit Court are named after two legendary coaches, and it's an honor to be able to share the name of the facility with them. And to have a statue outside the arena just blows my mind. I'm so thankful for the run we had at Nebraska, and I know the program is in great hands moving forward. I continue to be amazed at the amount of support and all the messages I've received from Husker Nation since retiring in January. All of this just reaffirms what I've always said: There is No Place Like Nebraska."
