OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A northeast Nebraska husband and wife accused of locking a special-needs foster child in a basement storage room have pleaded guilty.

 Krista and Charles Parker are scheduled to be sentenced May 26 in Omaha. 

Krista Parker pleaded guilty to three counts of child abuse. 

Charles Parker pleaded guilty to two counts. 

The 10-year-old boy was found Sept. 15, 2018, in the basement room of the Macy home by Omaha Nation Law Enforcement Services officers.

 The Parkers told investigators they only occasionally locked the boy in the room, but officers found the room covered in human feces and urine.&nbsp;

Couple accused of locking boy in basement plead guilty

ST. PAUL, Neb. (AP) - A judge on Monday sentenced a Central City man to prison for causing a crash that killed three people, including a woman who was pregnant.

District Judge Karin Noakes sentenced Jessie Scarlett to six years in prison after he pleaded no contest in January to vehicular homicide and vehicular homicide involving an unborn child, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.theindependent.com/news/local/scarlett-sentenced-to-six-years-in-prison/article_52704b12-5cab-11ea-b312-83e2de6b15db.html" target="_blank">The Grand Island Independent</a>. Scarlett received three years for each charge, with the sentences served consecutively.

The crash occurred July 10 at an intersection north of St. Libory when a pickup truck driven by Scarlett ran a stop sign and rammed into another pickup.

The crash killed Dannebrog residents Eric John, 48, and Tara Roy, 41, who was pregnant. A passenger in Scarlett's pickup, Briana Loveland, 19, also died.

One ambulance was sent to the scene, but police have yet to say whether anyone was injured or how many students - if any - were in the bus and what caused the crash.

KEARNEY&nbsp; — With sorrow, Nebraska State Patrol announces the passing of Trooper Dale Fahnholz, 47, of rural Kearney. 

Trooper Fahnholz suffered a medical emergency at his home Sunday afternoon, March 1. He was transported to Kearney Regional Hospital, where he passed away.

“Today is a sad day for our entire Nebraska State Patrol family,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Dale served Nebraska with honor for 26 years and was well known throughout central Nebraska. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues in Troop C during this difficult time.”

Trooper Fahnholz began his career as a Carrier Enforcement Officer stationed in North Platte in 1994 before transitioning to Trooper in 1995, stationed in Lexington. He transferred to Kearney in 1997, where he served for the rest of his career. During his time in Kearney, Trooper Fahnholz worked in both the Patrol Division and Investigative Services. Prior to joining NSP, Fahnholz served as a Deputy for the Red Willow County Sheriff’s Office.

Trooper Fahnholz is survived by his wife and two sons. Funeral arrangements are pending.

BOSTON (AP) — Jack Welch, who transformed General Electric into a highly profitable multinational conglomerate, has died. He was 84.  

Welch became one of the nation's most well-known and highly regarded corporate leaders during his two decades as GE's chairman and chief executive, from 1981 to 2001. 

He personified the so-called "cult of the CEO" during the late-1990s boom, when GE's soaring stock price made it the most valuable company in the world. 

Welch's results-driven management approach and hands-on style were credited with helping GE turn a financial corner, although some of the success came at the expense of thousands of employees who lost their jobs in Welch's relentless efforts to cut costs and rid GE of unprofitable businesses.

PENDER, Neb. (AP) — Authorities are trying to find an inmate who escaped from the Thurston County Jail in northeast Nebraska. 

Authorities say 26-year-old Cody Murphree fled the jail in Pender around 1 p.m. Sunday. Murphree is from Pilger. 

He was in custody awaiting sentencing on robbery and weapons convictions. 

Details about his escape haven't been released.&nbsp;

His passenger, 24-year-old Jenna Dieffenbach, was critically injured when she was thrown off the motorcycle. 

Police said she sustained serious injuries to her abdomen, pelvis, arm, and ankle that are not considered life threatening. Police are still investigating the crash.

DE SOTO, Mo. (AP) — A man is charged with animal abuse involving torture and armed criminal action for allegedly killing a dog with a machete and leaving the dismembered body for his mother to find.

Charging documents say Kaleb Reynolds of De Soto smoked methamphetamine prior to killing the dog. The charges were filed Thursday.

Police say the incident happened Feb. 17. Police say Reynolds was angry with his mother and girlfriend and became even more enraged after smoking meth.

Reynolds' dog jumped on him and Reynolds retrieved a machete from his yard and attacked the dog, leaving the remains for his mother to find, charges allege.

Court records do not list an attorney for Reynolds.

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — A small earthquake has shaken an area near Yellowstone National Park. The U.S. Geological Survey reports the quake was felt just after 6 a.m. Saturday near Cliff Lake about 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of West Yellowstone. 

The USGS report says the quake had a 3.9 preliminary magnitude and was 3.7 miles (6 kilometers) deep. 

There were no immediate reports of damage. 

Residents from West Yellowstone to Bozeman reported feeling it.

 The work will include making an overlook trail more accessible to people who are in wheelchairs or have other physical limitations. 

Plans also call for improving access to restrooms, a visitor center and a trail to the base of Devils Tower. 

Parking lots, visitor center exhibits and trail signs also will see improvements. 

Funding will come from a variety of sources including a portion of entrance fees. 

The Gillette News-Record reports work could begin this week and should be finished by November.

Investigators combed the neighborhood Thursday for clues about the suspect who fled from the scene on foot.

 Lawmakers voted 43-1 on a resolution Thursday calling on Congress and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to make flood control their top priority. 

The resolution is largely symbolic but is intended show that lawmakers view the issue as important.

 It was introduced by Sen. Julie Slama, of Peru, whose southeast Nebraska district was hit hard by last year's Missouri River flood. 

Slama has criticized the Corps, arguing that officials there haven't responded aggressively enough to the disaster.

Nebraska to feds: Prioritize flood control on Missouri River

BLOOMFIELD, Neb. (AP) — An egg farm building went up in flames and thousands of chickens died outside a small town in northeast Nebraska. 

Authorities say no employees or firefighters were injured Thursday evening by the fire at the Michael Foods facility. 

It sits a little less than 3 miles west of Bloomfield in Knox County. 

The fire was so intense a National Weather Service satellite detected its heat. 

A Bloomfield city councilman says Michael Foods has about 20 barns at the site and about 4 million chickens.

Authorities say no employees or firefighters were injured Thursday evening by the fire at the Michael Foods facility. It sits a little less than 3 miles west of Bloomfield in Knox County. The fire was so intense a National Weather Service satellite detected its heat. A Bloomfield city councilman says Michael Foods has about 20 barns at the site and about 4 million chickens. The fire cause is being investigated.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha man has been accused of stealing more than $9,400 from a parent-teacher organization. 

Douglas County Court records say 40-year-old Bradley Whitmore is charged with theft. 

Court records don't list the name of an attorney who could comment for him. 

The records say Whitmore took the money from the organization at Florence Elementary School. 

He's accused of making several unauthorized withdrawals from an organization account between August 2019 and Jan. 20.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Federal prosecutors for Nebraska say a northern Nebraska tomato-growing and packing plant accused of hiring people living in the country illegally has pleaded guilty, as has the owner of an area restaurant accused of supplying illegal workers. 

Prosecutors say O'Neill Ventures pleaded guilty Wednesday to conspiracy to harboring undocumented workers. 

A plea agreement requires the company to pay a $400,000 fine and to allow Homeland Security inspectors to review the company's hiring practices. 

 Prosecutors also say John Charles Good, owner of the La Herradura restaurant in O’Neill, pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting the practice of unlawfully employing undocumented workers.

 He faces up to six months in prison when he's sentenced May 29.

Nebraska tomato plant pleads guilty in immigration case

RAPID CITY, S.D. (Rapid City Journal) — A man has ordered to pay back more than $40,000 in a plea deal after a rampage through the Pine Ridge School, left what authorities call a bloody and ink-stained "path of destruction in his wake." 

The Rapid City Journal reports that Nicholas Otter Robe broke into the school early in June 2018. 

Tribal officers discovered two damaged government vehicles in the parking lot of the school and blood stains on the driver's seat. 

Inside, officers found that Otter Robe had damaged or destroyed four computers, two refrigerators, a touchscreen, a copy machine, two window air conditioners, a carpet and other items..

Kearney County District Court records say Christopher Preston was sentenced Wednesday in Minden to 19 to 20 years and given credit for 491 days already served.

 Preston had pleaded no contest to negligent child abuse resulting in death. Prosecutors lowered the charge in return for Preston’s plea.

 Investigators have said 6-week-old Zackary Preston was discovered Oct. 1 last year unresponsive in a bed at his home in Wilcox.

Minden man gets 19-20 years in prison for killing infant son

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are opening sharply lower, extending a weeklong rout and bringing the Dow Jones Industrial Average 10% below the record high it hit two weeks ago. 

Investors continue to dump stocks and shovel money into ultra-safe assets like bonds as they fear that the spreading virus outbreak will weigh heavily on the global economy by slowing down manufacturing, travel and spending.

 More companies including Microsoft and Budweiser maker InBev are warning their results will be hurt.

 The Dow lost 568 points, or 2.1%, to 26,400.

 The S&amp;P 500 lost 72 points, or 2.3%, to 3,045. 

The Nasdaq fell 256 points, or 2.9%, to 8,723.&nbsp;
