The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the case Wednesday night.

Condition of two patients with COVID-19 in Nebraska improving

PAPILLION, Neb. (AP) - A Michigan man has been sentenced to 14-20 years in a Nebraska prison for the crash death of a 71-year-old woman.

Sarpy County District Court records say Abram Sollman, 46, was sentenced Monday in Papillion. He'd been&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/8eeb36f8e6816179cb69ac8f21803ada" target="_blank">convicted</a>&nbsp;in December of vehicular homicide while driving drunk, drunken driving and reckless driving.

Cybercriminals target Lincoln health care company

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — A South Dakota Senate committee unanimously approved a proposal to legalize industrial hemp. 

It will now be considered by the full Senate before it can head to Gov. Kristi Noem's desk to either be vetoed or signed into law.

NEW DELHI (AP) — President Donald Trump is trying to minimize fears about coronavirus spreading rampantly in the United States. He says the situation is “very well under control in our country.” 

At the same time, his administration has asked Congress for an additional $2.5 billion for preparations in case of a widespread outbreak.

 Trump addressed the issue at a news conference in New Delhi following meetings with India's prime minister. 

Trump says the U.S. has “very few people” with coronavirus. 

The United States has 35 of the more than 80,000 confirmed coronavirus cases worldwide.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (The North Platte Telegraph) — A western Nebraska woman has been imprisoned for shaking her infant son, damaging his eyes and causing other injuries. 

The North Platte Telegraph reports that Shawlen Johnston was given 12 to 24 years at her sentencing Monday in North Platte. 

She told officers in in December 2018 she believed that her 18-month-old son had pulled the 7-month-old infant out of his bassinet and onto the floor while she had left the room to use a bathroom at her home in Tryon. 

Court documents say a doctor who treated the infant determined that the injuries were caused by shaking and were not accidental.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — More than three dozen Nebraska State Patrol troopers joined prison personnel in searching for contraband in the wake of assaults on two staffers at the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln. 

Officials say the searches Sunday and Monday uncovered homemade alcohol, items that will be tested for the presence of drugs and some items that could have been modified into weapons. 

The assaults happened around 6:30 p.m. Saturday inside one of the prison's housing units. 

The first injured staff member remains hospitalized. 

The second injured staff member was treated for head wounds and released from a hospital.

Troopers join searches for contraband at Lincoln prison

Lincoln – Two days of intense searches have been conducted at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) in the aftermath of an assault by an inmate that sent two staff members to the hospital. One staff member remains hospitalized.

“The thoughts of our teammates are with that staff member and his family. This was a particularly brutal and unprovoked attack,” said Scott R. Frakes, director of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS).

“This situation is a serious reminder of the inherent dangers of working in a prison,” added Warden Michele Wilhelm. “We train to be vigilant, but it is impossible to anticipate every situation.”

The assault occurred the evening of Saturday, February 22, 2020.  In addition to the staff member who was hospitalized, a second staff member was also attacked by the inmate. He was treated at the hospital for lacerations to his head and allowed to go home that night.

Early the following morning, 30 members of the NDCS Corrections Emergency Response Team (CERT) and members of the agency’s trained canine team began searching the area where the assaults occurred, as well as other housing spaces at the facility.

This morning, 43 members of the Nebraska State Patrol joined 42 members of CERT, and 11 members of the NDCS Special Operations Response Team (SORT) in searching other parts of the penitentiary. State troopers also brought in canine teams. During both day-long searches, the state penitentiary remained on modified operations*.

“The searches uncovered homemade alcohol, items that will be tested for the presence of drugs and some items which could have been modified into weapons,” noted Dir. Frakes.

Dir. Frakes called the involvement by the state patrol a “force multiplier” in terms of covering ground at the facility more effectively and efficiently. “This is the second time we have requested assistance from that agency to conduct wide-scale searches at the penitentiary. In both instances, the state patrol has responded immediately and with significant manpower.”

The Nebraska State Patrol is also charged with investigating the staff assaults.   Findings will be provided to the county attorney for determination of criminal prosecution.

Deputies then contacted North Carolina officers. 

They report finding nearly 1,300 pounds of marijuana and THC edibles in the man's storage unit and more drugs, a handgun and $90,000 in cash at his home.

MADISON, Neb. (KNEN-FM) — A judge has ruled that a man accused of stabbing to death a neighbor in northeast Nebraska is still incompetent for trial. 

Station KNEN reports that the judge made the ruling Friday on Rodolfo Castaneda-Morejon. He's pleaded not guilty to a murder charge in the slaying of Yosvanis Velazquez Gomez on Aug. 25, 2017, in Norfolk. 

Court records say Castaneda-Morejon told investigators he confronted Velazquez Gomez about an inappropriate text message sent to Castaneda-Morejon's girlfriend, suspecting the two were having a secret relationship. 

Castaneda-Morejon has been undergoing treatment at the state psychiatric hospital in an effort to restore him to competency.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol says 43-year-old Marshall Acker of Tyler climbed out of his vehicle through his sunroof during Friday's chase and jumped onto Interstate 90 near Sheridan as his vehicle traveled at around 80 mph. 

The approximately 5-mile pursuit started after troopers were notified of a suspected drunken driver. 

Acker was initially spotted driving at 97 mph in a 75 mph zone and failed to stop for a trooper who turned on his emergency lights and sirens.&nbsp;

Buffett appeared on CNBC Monday after releasing his annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders over the weekend. 

Buffett said the reports he gets from Berkshire's assortment of more than 90 businesses and stock investments show that business is a little softer now than it was six months ago, but he still remains optimistic about the future. 

Buffett said a variety of businesses are being hurt by the virus outbreak in China. For instance, he said many of Berkshire's roughly 1,000 Dairy Queen stores in China are closed.

SHELTON, Neb. (AP) — A 39-year-old man is suspected of setting a fire that destroyed a historic church near the south-central Nebraska city of Shelton. 

The man was taken into custody Friday on suspicion of arson. Buffalo County Court records don't yet show that he's been formally charged.

 Jail records show he remained in custody Monday. 

The fire at Zion Lutheran Church was reported just after 7 a.m. on Dec. 11. Firefighters who arrived minutes later found the structure engulfed in flames. 

The church was built in 1912 about 10 miles northwest of Shelton.&nbsp;

Health officials say at least 18 Americans who returned home from a quarantined cruise ship are infected with the new virus, and there are likely to be more among the returned passengers.

 That brings the number of cases in the U.S. to 35 since late January. 

The updated total includes travelers returning from China, two spouses of those travelers and others evacuated on chartered flights. 

Two new travel cases among California residents were announced this week. 

Authorities do not believe the new coronavirus is spreading widely in the United States. 

Worldwide, more than 76,000 people have been infected, mostly in China, where the outbreak began.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Police have announced an arrest in the vandalism earlier this year of a Jewish temple in Lincoln that has been investigated as a hate crime. 

Police say in a news release that 21-year-old Noah Miller, of Plattsmouth, was arrested Friday on suspicion of felony vandalism. 

The vandalism was discovered Jan. 15, when a passerby reported finding epithets and swastikas painted on the front steps of the South Street Temple. 

Police said in the written statement that investigators  analyzed surveillance video from the temple, numerous tips from the public and gathered evidence from search warrants to arrest Miller.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Two Nebraska State Penitentiary staff members were seriously injured when they were assaulted by an inmate on Saturday. 

The state Department of Correctional Services says an inmate punched a staff member in the head and knocked him out. 

The inmate continued to assault the staff member and used pepper spray on the staff member. 

When a second staff member arrived, the inmate struck him in the head numerous times with the pepper spray canister. 

The inmate was restrained when help arrived. 

The first injured staff member remained hospitalized after the assault. 

The second injured staff member received staples to close wounds on his head and was released from the hospital.
