Dixie Lou Howell (1940 - 2022)

Dixie Lou Howell, 82, passed away Tuesday, August 30, 2022.

She was born August 19, 1940 in Alliance, NE to Arthur Dennis and Thelma Viola (Porter) Sims. At age 16 Dixie was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Alliance. 

Shortly after her mother’s passing she married Darrell Lee Howell on December 7, 1957.  Dixie worked at various jobs until her and Darrell purchased the Daisy Queen and operated it for 4 years.  She then worked for Electric Hose and Rubber Company and Dayco for 25 years before retiring.  After retiring her and Darrell traveled in the RV to numerous places until her husband’s health declined.  Dixie loved watching her husband race stock cars and later watching her husband and son race together. Her involvement with the races in Alliance included her helping with the concession stand and even racing her husband’s #9 car in the Powder Puff.  She also enjoyed working in her vegetable and flower gardens and feeding her animals, the birds and squirrels that were in her yard.

She is survived by her children, Alvie (Lynn) Howell of Alliance, Patty (Michael) Brennan of Gillette, WY, Jacki Howell (Tracy Buskirk) and Kathy Wright (Dean Rippe) all of Alliance, her grandchildren, Lindsay Christen of Cheyenne, WY,  Ashley Christen (Jaramie Toedtli) of Alliance, Tyler Howell of Alliance, Elizabeth (Bryant) Smith of Gillette, WY, Christopher (Elizabeth) Brennan of Freeman, MO, James Brennan (Gloria Perez) of Woodland, CA, Jessica (Shaun) Lundy of Alliance, Daniel Moore of Alliance, Jessica  (Jonathan) Shockley of Attala, Al, Lennie Rae Wright of Albertville, Al and Cassandra (Michael) Schreiner of Alliance and 21 great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Lloyd and Pat Howell of Alliance.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Darrell, her granddaughter, Camile Lee Howell, her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ernest and Elma Howell and her brother-in-law, Gordon Howell.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 7 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel with the Reverend Gene Hill officiating.  Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. A luncheon will follow from Noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Eagles Club. Memorials may be given to Dobby’s Frontier Town c/o of Lori White, 423 Hudson Ave, Alliance, NE 69301 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
