Karen Ann (Crum) Chipperfield, age 69, passed from this life at Hemingford Community Care Center on Thursday, December 7, 2023.

Karen was born on December 7, 1954 to Roger L. and W. Jean (Abbott) Crum.

She grew up in Alliance, Nebraska along with her siblings Mary Crum and James “Jim” Crum. Karen graduated from St. Agnes Academy in 1973. She then continued her studies at West Nebraska Community College and received an associates degree in business. After graduating Karen worked for the Alliance Public School's as a secretary. She then worked for Alco Department Store as a customer service representative / cashier.

Karen married the love of her life, Raymond E. Chipperfield on May 29, 1979 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Alliance, Nebraska.&nbsp; To this union they were blessed with three children, Christopher, Jeannie-Marie and Andrea. Karen was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her smile, laughter, and kindness would light up a room. These traits will be carried on through her loving children and grandchildren. Karen was the piece of the puzzle that held our family together. Forever loved and in our hearts, she will never be forgotten.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond Chipperfield; her son, Christopher J. Chipperfield; her daughters, Jeannie-Marie (Sebastian) Scott and Andrea Chipperfield and fiancé Johnathan Matula, all of Alliance. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Crum; her sister in-law, Carol (Becker) Crum; her brother in-laws, Dwight (Shelly) Chipperfield, Breck Chipperfield and Greg Jones; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to her family, she is survived by special furry friends Dumpling, Roxie, Kylo and Yogi; feathered friends Moly, Poly, Cupcake and a host of parakeets.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, James Crum.

Private family memorial services will be held at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church.&nbsp; Father Matt Koperski will officiate.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

Karen Jean Furman, 81, passed away Saturday, December 2, 2023 in Denver, Colorado.

She was born on June 12, 1942.&nbsp; Karen was a loving and devoted wife and mother.&nbsp; She married A. Daniel Furman on January 27, 1966 at the age of 23.

She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl, two nieces and three nephews.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Furman, two sons, Rick and Rodney, her parents and her brother.

Burial services will be private for immediate family. She will be laid to rest with her husband and sons in the Alliance Cemetery.

Karen Jean Furman (1942 - 2023)

Paul David Edelbrock died peacefully after a short illness on November 14, 2023, in Walker, Minnesota. He spent his last hours in peace and comfort, surrounded by his loving family. Paul was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota, on April 1, 1930, to Edwina Borgerding and Felix Edelbrock. He was the youngest of five children and enjoyed an adventurous childhood in St. Cloud, where he was lovingly nicknamed “Ookie” by family and friends. Paul was fortunate to have lived a full life of over 93 years with many wonderful adventures and family memories.

During his childhood in St. Cloud, Paul earned his Eagle Scout Award and competed in numerous Minnesota canoe derbies. After graduation from Tech High School in St. Cloud, he was drafted into the army in 1951 and honorably discharged in 1952. Paul then spent several years traveling across the country pursuing grand adventures. He spent time exploring, camping, and working in Yellowstone Park. An avid skier, Paul eventually made his way to the mountains of Colorado, where he met his beloved wife, Katherine Knowles Campbell, whom he married in 1965, in a beautiful ceremony in Nisswa, Minnesota. Paul and Katherine lived in Bemidji, Minnesota, Denver, and Colorado Springs before settling in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, where they raised their family and lived for fifty-two years.

Paul was a serious collector of antiques. He spent much of his time attending auctions in Wyoming and Nebraska and visited every antique or “junk” store between Minnesota and Nebraska during his yearly pilgrimage to his cabin in the woods. With a remarkable attention to detail, he could appreciate the beauty of old homes. Paul was known for his painting, workmanship, and handyman skills. His passion was collecting beautiful antiques, which brought him much happiness.

Later, Paul spent more time in his native state, Minnesota. He and Katherine meticulously transformed an old general store on Ten Mile Lake into a quaint cabin in the woods. Paul, Katherine, and many family members and friends made happy memories in this beautiful cabin. He was so pleased to have spent the last months of his life in his cabin looking out at the forest he so loved as a child.

Paul is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Katherine Edelbrock; five children, Anna-Karin Edelbrock Fogg of NYC and Scottsbluff, Lisa (Matthew) Sweet of Omaha, NE, Susan (Evan) Scheele of Boston, MA, Paul (Kirsten) Edelbrock of Parker, CO, and Bridget (Aaron) Cisar of Omaha; grandchildren, Charles Fogg of NYC, Nathan (Harmony) Scheele of Northampton, MA, Martin Scheele and Nina Scheele of Boston, Ansley Edelbrock of Boulder, CO, Alex Edelbrock of Lincoln, NE, William and Eden Edelbrock-Peterson, Pearl, Kale, and Everson Cisar of Omaha; and terrific nephew, Tim (Laurie) Prem, of Cross Lake, MN.

Paul joins his parents, Felix and Edwina; brothers, Wallace, Edward, and Tom; sister, Phyllis Prem; and many extended family members. May he Rest in Peace in his cabin in the sky.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Scottsbluff, NE, on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at 10:30 am. Father Konka will preside. A private family inurnment was held on November 17, 2023, at Evergreen Cemetery in Walker, Minnesota.

Paul David Edelbrock (1930 - 2023)

Jenell D. Eckerle, 83, passed away Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at the Residency in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.

She was born May 29, 1940 in Rushville, Nebraska to Emerson J. and Winifred I. (Wollaston) Eckerle.

Jenell’s commitment to education was evident throughout her life.&nbsp; She graduated from the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture in 1958, continued her studies at Wesleyan University in Lincoln and at Chadron State College, earning her bachelor’s degree in 1963, and later obtained her master’s degree in 1968.&nbsp; For close to four decades, she dedicated herself to teaching elementary education.

Her teaching career began in Harrisburg and later Alliance, Sidney, and Cherry Creek Schools in Colorado, before joining the Gering Public Schools, where she devoted over 30 years of her career.

She was a member of the Vine United Methodist Church in Scottsbluff.

She is survived by her sisters, Marilynn (Kenneth) Hucke of Bayard and Glenda Eckerle (Ted Erlewine) of Rapid City, SD; her nieces, Shauna Ziemer of Bayard and Kristin (Jeff) Harm of Gothenburg; 5 great nieces, 1 great nephew and 1 great great nephew.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents and her great nephew, Austin Willert.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel.&nbsp; Reverend Craig Collins will officiate.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, December 8, 2023 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Richard L Sowerwine, Jr, 85 of Gering, Nebraska passed away Friday, December 1, 2023 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff.

Richard was born on March 1, 1938 in Scottsbluff, NE to Richard L Sowerwine, Sr and Mary (Brown) Sowerwine. He received his education at Gering, graduating from Gering High School in 1956.

He married Mary Johns on May 5, 1961. He later married Loretta Deines on June 5, 1973 in Gering.

He enjoyed bowling and golfing. He worked on oil wells, fire protection business, Star Herald and Frontier Airlines for 37 years.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years Loretta; son Scott Sowerwine (Laurel) of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren: Emilia O’Reilley of Boise, ID, Madison and Alyssa Sowerwine of Phoenix, AZ, Kevin Wynne of Kimball, NE, Kyle Wynne of Rapid City, SD and JolyAnn Rutledge of Sidney, NE; sister Sharon (Stewart) Rusch of Scottsbluff; great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and canine companion Mack.

Ronald A. Garska, 82 of Bridgeport passed away on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at the Morril County Community Hospital in Bridgeport. Ronald Albert Garska was born June 21, 1941 in Burwell, Nebraska to Harold and Waive Valene Garska (Harris). Ron grew up on a ranch west of Taylor, Nebraska and attended school in Taylor and graduated from Loup County High School in 1959.

Ronald served his country in the United States Army from 1964 - 1966 and was stationed in Vietnam during the war.&nbsp; Upon returning to the United States, he became a Drivers License Examiner for the State of Nebraska in Omaha and was later transferred to Bridgeport, Nebraska.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On May 20, 1966 he was united in marriage to Julie Ann Harris in Burwell, NE. To this union, 2 children were born, Ronald Travis and Stacey Lynn Garska. In 1967 they moved to Bridgeport where Ronald lived until his death on November 28, 2023 at Morrill County Hospital.

While in Bridgeport, he was employed as a Drivers License Examiner, later as a Police Officer and lastly, the Chief of Police until his retirement.

Ron loved is children. He loved to hunt and hunting seasons were spent in the mountains of Wyoming, the Sandhills of Nebraska and many winter days sitting in the goose blind near his home.&nbsp; He also enjoyed coffee with friends in the morning and looked forward to that each day&nbsp;&nbsp;

He will be missed by his children, Ronald (Stephanie) and Stacey Garska. Sister, Elaine Eberle (David) and her family and many other relatives including Teresa Sinner (Roger) and their family and Melissa Freeman (Greg) and their family.&nbsp; Ron's constant companion was 'Rusty', the dog he spent every minute with and who will be buried at his side.&nbsp; Passing before him in death were his parents, Harold and Waive, Sister Saron Freeman, Brother-in-Law David Eberle and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Brandon Walton – September 26, 1982 – November 29, 2023

Brandon Scott Walton was born on September 26, 1982, to Casey and Juile Walton in Pine Ridge, SD. He was welcomed home by his two older sisters Andrea and Amy. He then helped welcome home his two younger sisters Casey Lynn and Carmen. Being the only boy, and middle child was extremely fun for his sisters to torment him.

As a young boy, Brandon loved to fish, hunt, wrestle, play baseball, get his hands dirty, and play with the neighbors. There was always a game of hide and seek going on with the whole block. This became known as the “Hell block” as the Waltons, Sharps, Deans and Benben’s were always causing trouble.

One of Brandon’s greatest attributes was his knowledge and skills for fixing cars and woodworking. He was always watching and learning from his dad, Grandpa Sonny and Uncle Toad. They were his biggest influences in life. He spent a lot of his childhood at the ranch learning how to work hard and summers in Minnesota learning to chop wood.

In high school, Brandon was always the life of the party. Wherever he was, his presence was known. He was always telling jokes or playing pranks. Again, he learned this from his father. It was very evident he wanted to be just like his father.

Brandon became a very proud father at the young age of 17, to Davon Scott. This only made him want to work harder and continue to pass down the Walton ways. Jesse Tre was then welcomed into this world almost two years later. His boys were his pride and joy. Brandon married Kayla Musfelt in July of 2003, they continued to grow their family, and welcomed six beautiful little girls, Shaylyn Nicole, Makenna Elizabeth, Ashlynn MaKayla, Tayanna Rayne, Bryleah Lynn and Kendall Shay. This completed the “infamous 6”.

Brandon moved his family to Parker, SD in 2011 in search of a better life for his family. He made that their home. It was here that he would build cars and bikes with his boys and attend many father-daughter dances with his girls.

Life happened, and Brandon moved away from his family. He lived in a few different towns in Nebraska, then went back to South Dakota to be as close to his kids as he could be. He continued to work hard and did everything in his power to be a part of his children’s lives. No matter what he did, his demons always won. No one in his family ever stopped loving him. His mother was always in contact and helped him in any way she could. This was because of the special bond these two had always had.

Brandon suddenly passed away on November 29th, 2023, due to natural causes, in Loomis, SD. He is survived by his parents, Casey and Julie Walton. Grandmother Francis Walton, Siblings Andrea (Travis) Miller, Amy (Matt) Soderlin, Casey Lynn (Ryan) Sharp and Carmen (Jason) Anderson, Children Davon, Jesse, Shaylyn, Makenna, Ashlynn, Tayanna, Bryleah and Kendall Walton, grandson Weston, many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and one great nephew.

Brandon is preceded in death by his Maternal Grandparents Irving and Beverly Butler, Paternal Grandfather Melvin (Sonny) Walton and nephew Tre Sharp.

Lyle B. Huffman, 61, of Banner County, Nebraska, passed away surrounded by family on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at Anschutz Hospital in Aurora, Colorado.&nbsp; Lyle was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in early 2021.&nbsp; He recently fought a courageous battle against the West Nile virus.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at Monument Bible Church located at 4124 Ave. I, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday, December 4, 2023, at Reverence Funeral Parlor in Scottsbluff. Lyle was born on July 18, 1962, in Scottsbluff, to Archie and Dorothy (Pile) Huffman.&nbsp; He graduated from Banner County High School and received an Associates Degree in Agriculture from UNL.&nbsp;

Lyle moved back to the family farm in Banner County in 1982 to farm and ranch with his dad, Archie, and his brother, Raymond.&nbsp; Later, he and his brother Bryan farmed together for 24 years.&nbsp; Lyle was self-employed and enjoyed giving his nieces and nephews tractor and combine rides.&nbsp; More recently, he gave tractor rides to his great nephews, Brecken and Luke.&nbsp;

He was member of the Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church, he served as the Secretary of the Kirk Cemetery Board, volunteered as a Banner County Firefighter and EMT, served on the FSA (Farm Service Agency) Board, and volunteered on the Banner County Zoning Committee.

Lyle was soft spoken with a great sense of humor.&nbsp; He was kindhearted and never knew a stray cat.&nbsp; He loved his family and especially spending time with his nieces and nephews and their children.

He is survived by his mother, Dorothy Huffman of Gering; brothers, Howard (Wendy) of Lincoln, Raymond of Gering, and Bryan (Sandra) of Potter; sister, Doris Huffman of Lincoln; ten nieces and nephews; and many great nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Lyle was preceded in death by his dad, Archie.

An informal gathering of family and friends will be Saturday, December 16, 2023 from 3-5 pm at the Lofing Home, 110341 County Road 26, Scottsbluff. At her request, cremation has taken place. She married Tim Oehlerking at a ceremony in Jamaica, which has been her very favorite destination place. Many years later, they divorced.

Most recently she began employment at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

Tracy moved back to Scottsbluff in September to be closer to her family.

Tracy loved her Huskers and especially loved her cats CG and Neala.

Survivors include her mother Mary Lou Snell of Scottsbluff; siblings Chris (Dave) Dill of Gering, Reed Snell of Oro Valley, AZ, Scott (Vik) Snell of Loveland, CO, Lisa (Mike) Lofing of Scottsbluff, Laurie Adams of Arvada, CO and Rodney Snell of Portland, OR; numerous nieces and nephews and her longtime friend from Lincoln, Jan Dill who helped her immensely during this trial.

Ida Mae Drabbels, 94, passed away Friday, December 1, 2023 at Highland Park Care Center.

She was born on October 16, 1929 at Gordon, Nebraska to Arnold and Augusta (Poppe) Kling. She was baptized on February 2, 1930 and she was confirmed May, 1945.

On December 26, 1948 she was united in marriage to Lawrence Drabbels at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Gordon. &nbsp;

She was a member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church where she was active in the Sunday school program, L.W.M.L. and Altar Guild. &nbsp;She was also a member of the Red Hat Society. &nbsp;

Ida Mae is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Lee Backstrom of Thornton, CO and her son, Tad Drabbels of Alliance. &nbsp;She is also survived by her grandchildren, Mark (Maura) Backstrom of Fort Collins, CO and Michelle (Rob) Delier of Westminster, CO and her great grandchildren , Colton, Caitlyn Chris, Nova and Lana. &nbsp;In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, an infant daughter, Sharon, her brothers, Floyd and Lester and her sisters, Inez,Dorothy and Donna Mae.

Darrell E. “Shorty” Campbell passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance.

He was born on December 5, 1946 in Alliance to William Russell and Virginia (Delsing) Campbell. &nbsp;

On April 4, 1970 he was united in marriage to Gay Franklin in Alliance.&nbsp;

Shorty was a farmer, rancher, poker player and tremendous family man and friend. He was always quick with a joke to make you smile and had a laugh that would fill the building making the most grumpy of people smile. Shorty’s laugh would fill a room and will never be duplicated.

He and his five siblings grew up in rural Nebraska north of Hemingford and enjoyed the farming life. &nbsp; He attended rural school until the 8th grade. Within that time he enjoyed showing Jersey milk cows at the local 4H program and would love to tell stories of the two times that he traveled to show the milk cows in Omaha at the Aksarben, once one by train and once by a rack in the back of a truck. He went to high school at Saint Agnes, boarding there to play football and basketball. He had many stories of the nuns and his shenanigans. He then would go home in the spring to help with the farming at his family's ranch and farm. Shorty graduated from Saint Agnes in 1965. He then went to work for a local farmer/rancher by the name of Johnny Franklin and drove a beet truck. This is when he met and fell in love with the farmer's daughter in 1968, marrying Gay in 1970. &nbsp;Shorty and Gay then moved to Gillette, WY where he worked in the oil fields and continued his history setting stock car racing. They moved back to western Nebraska in 1972 to help with the family farm, starting his life work of ranching and farming. He then took up with Jerry Mundt to the world of custom harvest. He never knew a stranger and would never shy away from giving advice to anybody that asked for it.&nbsp;

Along the way, he was blessed with two children, Corey and Krista. Shorty would beam with pride whenever asked about Corey’s football career, and in later years he depended heavily on Krista to keep the cattle operation going. After both Corey and Krista brought their spouses into the family mix he was blessed with seven grandchildren who became his pride and joy. He enjoyed his family and friends, his cows and farming life, and all the places it took him. &nbsp;He knew no stranger in the state of Nebraska.

&nbsp;He is survived by his wife, Gay, son Corey with wife Brooke Campbell of Gretna, NE and daughter Krista with husband Peter Gomez of Marsland, NE, his grandchildren, Emma Gomez, Isabell Gomez, Sofia Gomez, Shaylynn Campbell, Jordyn Campbell, Draven Campbell and Chase Campbell. &nbsp;He is also survived by his sisters and brothers, Joanne Kresl of Hemingford, Russell (Virginia) Campbell of Alliance, Sue Nollette of Dallas, TX and Dan (Deb) Campbell of Hemingford. &nbsp;He was preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph, his parents and his brother, Archie.

Darrell was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Bridget Catholic Church with Father Matt Koperski officiating. &nbsp;Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. &nbsp;A wake service will be Monday at 7:00 p.m. at the church. &nbsp;Visitation will be Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Funeral Home in Hemingford and continue at the wake service.

Memorials may be given to the Hemingford Volunteer Firefighters Association and the Sons of American Legion Scholarship fund.

He enjoyed his family and friends, his cows and farming life, and all the places it took him. &nbsp;He knew no stranger in the state of Nebraska.&nbsp;He is survived by his wife, Gay, son Corey with wife Brooke Campbell of Gretna, NE and daughter Krista with husband Peter Gomez of Marsland, NE, his grandchildren, Emma Gomez, Isabell Gomez, Sofia Gomez, Shaylynn Campbell, Jordyn Campbell, Draven Campbell and Chase Campbell. &nbsp;He is also survived by his sisters and brothers, Joanne Kresl of Hemingford, Russell (Virginia) Campbell of Alliance, Sue Nollette of Dallas, TX and Dan (Deb) Campbell of Hemingford. &nbsp;He was preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph, his parents and his brother, Archie.Darrell was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church.Funeral services will be Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Bridget Catholic Church with Father Matt Koperski officiating. &nbsp;Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. &nbsp;A wake service will be Monday at 7:00 p.m. at the church. &nbsp;Visitation will be Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Funeral Home in Hemingford and continue at the wake service.Memorials may be given to the Hemingford Volunteer Firefighters Association and the Sons of American Legion Scholarship fund.

Dann E. Reynolds, 72, passed away on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at his home near Hemingford.

He was born July 31, 1951 at Alliance to Boyd and Irene (Carr) Reynolds. &nbsp;A lifetime area resident Dann worked on the family farm and also for Parker-Hannifin in Alliance for 32 years prior to his retirement. &nbsp;He had a knack of being a handyman working on his farm equipment and could fix most anything. &nbsp;He had many interest throughout his life including sports, hunting and fishing. &nbsp;

Ryan Lee Nauenburg, 42, formally of Mitchell, Nebraska, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully in his sleep, on Thursday November 23, 2023, at his home in Fort Laramie, Wyoming. A Celebration of Life will be held with family and close friends on December 9, 2023 from 1-4pm at Redz in Mitchell, NE. Cremation has taken place in accordance with Ryan’s wishes.

Ryan worked various jobs throughout his life. He had many skills but was especially talented in wood working, mechanics and building. He enjoyed being outside; being with his boys; hanging out with his buddies; riding four wheelers and go-carts; grilling; fishing; and working on “things”. Ryan was always tinkering on something. Whether it be a car, a tractor, a lawn mower, a go-cart, or building his own things. He had many “works in progress” and you could always find him starting something new. Ryan never missed the opportunity to teach his kids things. Whether it be how to drive a four-wheeler; use a tool; fix something up; or be a chef on the grill. He was always grilling or cooking something, and his food was the best! You would also never find Ryan passing up a cold beer, a bonfire or a trip to the lake. He was very free-spirited and lived his whole life that way.

Ryan will be deeply missed by his loved ones, all those who loved him, and all who knew and experienced his big heart and deep love.

Darlene Finch, age 90, passed away peacefully at her home on November 27, 2023.

Joan Darlene was born on December 2, 1932 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Alliance, NE to George and Hilda (Sorensen) McElheny.&nbsp; She attended Alliance schools and graduated in 1951.&nbsp; While in school she received state awards in shorthand.

Darlene was united in marriage to Russell Finch on July 26, 1951 in the Presbyterian Church in Alliance.&nbsp; After marriage, Russ and Darlene lived in Alliance for two years and Russ worked for Gulf Research out of high school and Darlene worked as a telephone operator.&nbsp; In 1953, Russell was drafted into the U.S. Army and was stationed in Japan.&nbsp; During this time, Darlene worked as a telephone operator and lived with her mother-in-law, Dorothy Barton.&nbsp; After his military service, Russell returned and they lived in Chimney Town.&nbsp; Their first child, Scott, was born in 1956.&nbsp; Their daughter, Rhonda, was born the following year.&nbsp; At this time, Darlene worked at the credit bureau and in operation of Russell's and her own business, Kidnapper Manufacturing in 1968.&nbsp; She managed this business for the next 31 years, during which time they employed many high school students.&nbsp; In 1992, they ventured into a new business, Greenhouse in the Snow.&nbsp; She retired around 2105.&nbsp; In her spare time, they enjoyed traveling throughout almost every state in the nation.&nbsp; She also liked spending time with her grandkids, friends, gardening and interior decorating.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, Russell; her daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Carl Smith of Fairchild, WI; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Trent and his wife, Nichole Smith, and their tow children, Clair and Leah of Fond du Lac, WI; granddaughter, Tasha Newton and her husband, Kyle, and their children, Olivier and Dorothy of Fall Creek, WI.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Scott, and one brother and two sisters.

Rodney Kriz passed away on November 18, 2023 at his home in Alliance.

Rodney M Kriz was born in the great year of 1969. He grew up in a small loving family of Marcus and Betty Kriz, and with his older sister Roxi Kriz, with many aunts and uncles all around. Rodney, also known as "Rod" or "Roddy" would spend his life tending to normal responsibilities on the farm. Helping his dad with the cattle/farm during the day, and going out to hang with his friends by the evening. Although Rodney was born a farmer, he still had many other jobs growing up including working at the Old Central School, paper delivery boy, a handyman, and the occasional plumber. Never shy to lend a hand if needed. He considered himself a "jack of all trades".

Rodney spent his free time kicking back, and doing the things he loved. Which included fishing, working on his cars, making sure his lawn and garden looked the best, hanging out with friends, and always ready to party! Although his ways were a bit untraditional to some, he always made sure to get stuff done the "Rodney way". He always knew how to have a good time, even in the worst of times.

Rodney was preceded in death by his sister, Roxi Reed, his mother, Betty Pebley and his father, Marcus Kriz. May they all rest in peace.

Malvory Marie Shankland, 84, died Monday, November&nbsp;27, 2023&nbsp;at Highland Park Care Center with her family at her side.&nbsp;

Malvory was born August 27, 1939 in Alliance, Nebraska to Jesse and Malvory (Zobel) Watson.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She was raised first north of Alliance and then&nbsp;on the family ranch on Angora Hilltop. She graduated from Bridgeport High School. Malvory married James “Jim” Shankland July 8, 1960. She considered him her best friend and they held hands as they walked or sat in their chairs to the day that she died.&nbsp;

They started their family on Jim's family ranch south of&nbsp;Ashby in July 1960. Next moving to Alliance and then permanently&nbsp;to Hyannis in&nbsp;1968.&nbsp;They raised three children Gary, Shari and Joe.&nbsp;

In Hyannis she worked at the Bank of Hyannis (where she started their first computer electronic banking system), Grant County Treasurer and Clerk's&nbsp;Offices and retired from Dredla's&nbsp;Grocery. She also&nbsp;spent countless hours dispatching and coordinating with crews of PREMA who&nbsp;Jim worked with for many years.&nbsp;Once Jim moved into construction she also helped him for many hours both in the shop and on building sites. She was fearless and had no issue doing finishing&nbsp;work or shingling houses. She even helped shingle a barn which included placing the ridge cap.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was very active in her church Swede Valley Lutheran which became Shepherd of the Hills in Hyannis. She sponsored,&nbsp;with Jim, the Lutheran youth group for many years.&nbsp;

She was the mother to many children besides her own, always welcoming everyone to her table&nbsp;or house. She spent many blizzards cooking for friends of her children stuck in town. She was known for providing hugs, support, and advice to many that just needed an ear or a shoulder.&nbsp;

She prided herself on being there for her entire family which included 30+ nieces and nephews. She spent days in hospitals supporting her family through many illnesses and injuries. She cooked multiple hundreds of cakes and cookies to give to people of the community.

Things that may not be known is that she enjoyed fast cars which&nbsp;included street racing in her 20’s. She was a crack shot with a pistol, was accomplished at woodworking, was a writer and penned the verses to one hymn with Pastor Lloyd Lenz.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter-in-law Jeanie Shankland, sisters Betty Grant, Mary Ann Blackstone, Alice Twombly, Bonnie Egan, and Ilene Christensen, brothers George, Jesse, Dan, Bill and Jack Watson, brother-in-law’s Dick and Bob Shankland.&nbsp;

She is survived by her husband of 63+ years Jim Shankland of Hyannis, children Gary Shankland of Bassett, Shari Shankland Redler of Lincoln, Joe (Craig) Shankland of Denver, Colorado. Granddaughters Jayde, Malvory and Rhegan; Grandsons Payton (Zoe) and Alex, as well as great-granddaughter Cheznie.

Memorial services will be at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Hyannis&nbsp;on Monday December 4, 2023 at 1:00 p.m.&nbsp; Pastor Jonathan Oetting will officiate. The family feels that casual dress is appropriate. Interment will be at a future date with family at Nebraska Veterans&nbsp;Cemetery at Alliance, Nebraska.&nbsp;

Charles Mandelko age 66 of Broken Bow, NE passed away November 26, 2023.

Charles Robert Mandelko was born May 12, 1957, in Chadron, NE to Harold and Eunice (Nadobny) Mandelko. Charles attended and graduated from Chardon High School. After high school Charles worked at Safeway in Chadron as a “Bagboy”, then working his way up to Produce Manager. After a year he then went to work for BNSF. In 1978 Charles transferred to Broken Bow. He retired from BNSF in 2016.

Charles enjoyed train memorabilia, cooking with a Dutch Oven, hunting, fishing, the great outdoors, and golf in retirement.

Charles was preceded in death by a son Dan in 2020, and his parents Harold and Eunice.

Charles is survived by his significant other Dixie Nielsen of Broken Bow, children Stacy (Tom) Kleinjan of Hastings, Justin Mandelko of Miller, and Ryleigh Lindstrom of Broken Bow, eight grandchildren Dana, Alex, Natala, Matthew, Jacob, Kaleb, Brick, and Heather, two brothers Don Mandelko of Whitney, Marty Mandelko of Chadron, and two sisters Connie James of Ankeny, IA, and Shelly Mandelko of Tampa, FL.

Charles attended and graduated from Chardon High School. After high school Charles worked at Safeway in Chadron as a “Bagboy”, then working his way up to Produce Manager. After a year he then went to work for BNSF. In 1978 Charles transferred to Broken Bow. He retired from BNSF in 2016.Charles enjoyed train memorabilia, cooking with a Dutch Oven, hunting, fishing, the great outdoors, and golf in retirement.Charles was preceded in death by a son Dan in 2020, and his parents Harold and Eunice.Charles is survived by his significant other Dixie Nielsen of Broken Bow, children Stacy (Tom) Kleinjan of Hastings, Justin Mandelko of Miller, and Ryleigh Lindstrom of Broken Bow, eight grandchildren Dana, Alex, Natala, Matthew, Jacob, Kaleb, Brick, and Heather, two brothers Don Mandelko of Whitney, Marty Mandelko of Chadron, and two sisters Connie James of Ankeny, IA, and Shelly Mandelko of Tampa, FL.

Charles Mandelko (1957 - 2023)

Stephen E. Lauer, age 65, passed away at his home on November 21, 2023, following years of battling poor health, depression and pain.&nbsp;

He was born in Alliance, Nebraska on August 24, 1958, to Francis and Joyce Lauer.&nbsp;

Stephen left high school in 1976 (he would later obtain his G.E.D.), to join the United States Navy, to help provide for his mom and sisters. He served three years aboard the aircraft carrier USS Midway as a supply specialist.&nbsp; He was very proud of his military service and proud to be a veteran.&nbsp; He was honorably discharged from active duty July 1979 and returned to Alliance where he worked at Hempel’s Service Station, then several years for Service Master and later for Alliance Times-Herald.&nbsp;

When he could no longer work due to health issues, he passed his time working in his yard, tinkering in his garage, watching old war movies or reading books.&nbsp; He also enjoyed riding his bike around town, often with his dog, Shags, riding along in a basket.&nbsp;

Stephen was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.&nbsp; He is survived by his sisters, Natalie (Dale) Collins, Laura Simpson, Valerie (Joel) Frank, and Jennifer (Bob) Bragg; nieces and nephews, Matthew, Jacob and Devan Collins; Jessica Frank Heil and Joshua Frank; Zachary and Alex Simpson and Kristina Simpson Joplin; and Rachel Bragg.&nbsp; He was also very proud of his five great-nephews and four great-nieces.&nbsp;

Betty Irish, 87, of Alliance, NE passed away November 22, 2023. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

She was born in 1936 to parents Mathias and Elizabeth Fosher, joining brother Dann Fosher on their ranch in Manville, Wyoming. There she grew up riding horses and hunting. Betty attended Chadron State College where she met and married Ron Irish. They had three children, Craig, Beth and Kelly.

She was a member of the Alliance Women’s Club and was honored to model in the exclusive event “Fashion Flies to the Ranch” in 1963. She was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Betty was a 4-H leader and an accomplished tailor/seamstress, a master craftsman of woodworking and an award-winning artist of both painting and fiber mediums. It’s been said “Betty has more talent in her little finger than most people have in their entire body.” We agree!

She is survived by children Craig Irish (Deb), Beth Irish (Scott Mayer) and Kelly Donner (Rick). Her grandchildren, Dustin (Angyl), Kasey (Alex), Kelly (Brian), Kyla (Mark), Arielle, Kandice (Austin) and Kirby (Amanda) and her great-grandchildren, Malachai, Jaman, Kellan, Bryson, Sofia, Luca, NoraLuna, Holland and Nora Jo.&nbsp;

Thank you to special friends Rick &amp; Vic Bolek, Sally Yeager, Rita &amp; Pat Burri, Dr. Tim Narjes, his staff and Box Butte General Hospital.&nbsp;

Our mom had one bucket list item, to be “Nose to Cheek” with a horse again. This past summer, this was made possible with the help of our dear friends Rick &amp; Vic Bolek and East Point Horspice. Betty not only got to snuggle up to a horse but was actually able to ride again.&nbsp;

John Lynn Wilson, 89, of Lakeside, passed away Saturday, November 18, 2023 at Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance.

He was born in Ontario, Canada on October 8, 1934 and was raised by foster parents.&nbsp; John immigrated to the United States in the early 1960’s and worked on ranches in Colorado and Nebraska. After 12 years of working at the Joy Ranch he moved into Lakeside in 1973 and took up beekeeping.&nbsp;

On December 21, 1963 he was united in marriage to Karen Kay Hoon.&nbsp; To this union 2 children were born. He is survived by his wife, his children, Lynette Wilson of Texas and John Wilson, Jr. of Alliance.&nbsp; He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kayla Brown of TX, Joshua Keckler of Maryland and Cheyenne Wilson of Omaha and his 3 great-grandchildren, Jaxon and Ryker Brown and Rippley Heittmatter and his sister Nina Harris of Illinois. He was preceded in death by his brother, Clifford and his sister, Dorothy.

Alvina Mollie Lehl, 96, passed away Saturday, November 18, 2023 at Highland Park Care Center in Alliance.

She was born at Bayard, Nebraska on July 13, 1927 to Henry and Katherine Bauer. &nbsp;

On August 14, 1942 she was united in marriage to Robert Lehl in Harrisburg, NE.&nbsp; To this union 5 children, Roger, Judith, James, Robert and Charles were born. They moved to Alliance in 1953.&nbsp;

Her survivors include her daughter, Judy Smith of Alliance, her grandchildren, Kenneth, Laurie Gray, Jolynne Lehl, Cynthia Byer, Vicki Smith, Scott Lehl and Steve Lehl, along with numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Hermina Meyer of Portland, OR and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, her sons, Roger, Jimmy, Bobby and Chuck, her son-in-law, Evert Smith, her grandson, Roger Lehl, Jr. and her siblings, Kenneth, Richard, Virginia, Neva and Elnora.

Patricia Ann Speer, 89 of Loveland CO passed away Sunday, November 12, 2023 following a long term illness.

She was born July 22, 1934 to the late Lloyd and Mabel (Tiensvold) Talbot. She graduated from Rushville High School. During her High School years she worked as a secretary for attorney Ed Holstein.

Pat married Wayne Speer on August 31, 1952. Shortly thereafter they moved to Cheyenne where Wayne was stationed at Warren Air Force Base. While living in Cheyenne she was an assistant manager at a children’s clothing store. They moved back to the family ranch 17 miles north of Lakeside, NE in 1955 and lived there until they retired in 2006 and moved to Chadron, NE. Pat raised their three children and was the bookkeeper for the ranch. After the children got older, Pat worked as a teacher’s aide for District 127 school. She also served as an election poll worker for many years. She was a wonderful seamstress and knitter and made beautiful quilts, afghans, and clothes.

After Wayne died in 2014, Pat was able to remain in their Chadron home until moving to Loveland, CO in 2021. This wouldn’t have been possible without the help and support of many good friends and family for which she and her children are forever grateful for. She lived at The Wexford Independent Living Community in Loveland where she made many good friends and enjoyed her time there.

Preceding her in death are her husband Wayne Speer, parents Lloyd and Mabel Talbot, brothers Donald Talbot, James Talbot, and David Talbot; sisters Karen Talbot, Arlene Siders, Phyllis Janssen, and Doris Lehman.

Survivors include her sisters Geraldine Pearson, Lorna Lee Kelley; children Neil A. Speer (Ellen Lind) of North Platte, NE, daughters, Rebecca (Ray) Oltman of Herman, NE; Tracy (Doug) Hoff of Loveland, CO; one grandson Corey (Bridget) Oltman of Glendale, AZ; one great-granddaughter, one step-granddaughter, and three step great-grandchildren.
