Loretta Loy Broberg (“Lorie”) passed away February 7, 2026. She was born in Chadron, Nebraska on August 11, 1964, to Theodore Perry Broberg and Sandy LaChance.

Memorial Services will be March 14, 2026 at 11:00am at the American Legion in Chadron, Nebraska.&nbsp;

Lorie spent her formative years in Chadron being raised by her stepmother, Patricia Broberg, alongside her brother, Theodore Broberg, Jr.&nbsp;Lorie attended Chadron Public Schools and later earned her GED in 1984.

 She became a mother at a young age and welcomed her daughters, Brandi Ward in 1980 and Angelica Ward in 1982. Lorie embraced motherhood with strength, resilience, and unwavering devotion, always striving to provide the best life possible for her children. 

As a single mother of two young daughters, Lorie demonstrated remarkable courage and determination by enlisting in the United States Army in 1986. She proudly served in the U.S. Army’s 3rd Infantry Division. During her military service, Lorie was stationed in Germany and also spent time in Afghanistan. Her dedication and discipline were recognized through several honors, including the Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Sharpshooter Badge (Rifle), Marksman Badge (.38 Cal Pistol), and the Army Good Conduct Award. Lorie was honorably discharged from the Army and returned home to Chadron, Nebraska, carrying with her the strength, leadership, and resilience she gained through her service.

After leaving the military, she returned to Nebraska where Lorie continued her commitment to helping others by serving as a police officer with the Crawford Police Department and the Chadron Police Department. She was particularly passionate about supporting victims of domestic abuse, showing deep compassion, empathy, and an unwavering desire to protect those in vulnerable situations. Her work reflected the caring and courageous spirit that defined her life.

In 1993, Lorie welcomed her youngest daughter, Haylee Hansen. Inspired to continue building a better future for her family, Lorie pursued higher education at Chadron State College. Through dedication and perseverance, she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1999. Demonstrating her determination and love of learning, Lorie continued her education and earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Chadron State College in 2001. Her passion for knowledge and leadership eventually led her to earn a Doctorate in Organizational Management from Capella University in 2011.

While pursuing her education, Lorie began working at Oglala Lakota College, where she initially served as a professor teaching business courses. Her intelligence, work ethic, and leadership abilities quickly became evident, and she later rose to the position of Vice President. After leaving Oglala Lakota College, Lorie continued her work in higher education at tribal colleges in Nebraska and Iowa, serving in roles including Vice President of Teaching and Chief Financial Officer. She was deeply committed to education and took great pride in helping students and institutions succeed.

Lorie was loved deeply by her family and friends and will be profoundly missed. She was intelligent, accomplished, compassionate, and remarkably resilient. Those who knew her admired her strength, her determination, and her ability to uplift and support others. She had a generous heart and continuously sought ways to make a positive impact on the lives of those around her.

Lorie had a special love for animals and was an enthusiastic animal rescuer. She adored her Pomeranian, Tatiana, and her three cats. Lorie never hesitated to take in stray kittens or cats, nursing them back to health and helping them find loving homes. Her kindness toward animals reflected the deep compassion she carried throughout her life.In her free time, Lorie enjoyed bowling, watching reality television, solving Sudoku puzzles, and spending time with her family. She treasured these moments and found great joy in the company of those she loved. 

Lorie will always be remembered for her warm smile, witty sense of humor, quiet thoughtfulness, and genuine kindness. Her strength, intelligence, and compassion left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Lorie is survived by her spouse, Charles (“Charlie”) Gottwald; her children, Brandi Ward (Logan Weyand), Angelica Ward (James Lind), and Haylee Hansen (Amir Capistran); her stepchildren, Cassandra Dede, Chandler Gottwald, and Teresa Gottwald; her grandchildren, Karsten Norgard, Truli Norgard, Scarlett Cook, and Kristallin Biernacki; her stepmother, Patricia Broberg-Davy (James Davy); her siblings, Theodore Broberg, Jr. (Jana Broberg), Jolynn Lee (Todd Lee), Jefferson Broberg (Stephanie Broberg), Elonna Broberg, Tonya Pierson (Scott Pierson), and Thomas Taylor; and her many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Theodore (“Tedd”) Perry Broberg, Sr.; her beloved grandmother, Mary Lecher; her biological mother, Sandy LaChance; and numerous uncles.

Loretta Loy Broberg (“Lorie”) (1964 - 2026)

Flora F. Struble Scott, age 90, peacefully passed away, March 1, 2026 at Heritage Estates Independent Living Cottages in Gering, NE with her family by her side. Flora was born on November 7, 1935 in Alliance, NE to Leo Lyle Struble and Luella (Prouty) Struble. Being the youngest of 6 children, Flora soon brought joy and laughter to the Struble household and was quickly given the nickname Fudge.

Flora spent her childhood growing up in Alliance. She was taught the meaning of Patriotism at an early age. During World War II you could find Flora with her Mother handing out sandwiches to the Paratroopers at the Alliance Train Station or spending Sunday Dinners with Paratroopers her Father would bring home from the Base.

Being the Daughter of a Railroad Conductor, Flora quickly obtained a love for books and reading from having to be respectful of her Father’s sleep. Flora could always be found at the Library with a book in her hands and was a known Bookworm her entire Life. When Flora was not reading, you could find her kicking around town with her friends going to the Alliance Skating Rink, Alliance Theatre or taking passenger trains to Ravenna to see her Family, to Scottsbluff with Friends or going to the West Coast with her Family.

After Graduating from Alliance High School with the Great Bulldog Class of 1953, Flora met her husband, Jack L. Scott from Mexico, Mo, when she tripped him at the Alliance Skating Rink just to get a ride in his convertible. They married 3 weeks later in Hot Springs, SD at the Courthouse and remained married for 68 years until Jack’s passing in 2020. Flora and Jack lived happily with their 2 daughters, Denise and Connie, in Mexico, MO until their return to Alliance in 1971. Flora and Jack remained avid roller skaters well into their 40’s.

Later in Life, Flora became a persistent genealogist with her sisters, Lois and Donna, spending many years tracing their family history. Many of their findings and documentation are filed with the Nebraska State Historical Society in Lincoln. Flora was a Member of The Daughters of the American Revolution and spent many hours at the Salt Lake City Mormon Genealogy Library researching her Family history dating back to Germany in 1492. Flora’s Family came to Nebraska in 1864 and homesteaded in Ravenna, NE, something she was always proud of.

Flora is survived by her daughters Denise (Jim) Cunningham, Alliance, NE and Connie (Bill) Bosch, Denver, CO, her Sister Donna Vallejo, Alliance, NE and many Nieces and Nephews who lovingly still call her Aunt Fudge. Flora is preceded in death by her parents Leo and Luella Struble, her brothers Frank and Idell Struble and her sisters Lois St.John and Shirley Todd.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday, March 20, 2026 at 2 pm, Bates Gould Chapel, 1020 W. 10th St, Alliance, NE. Burial will follow at Nebraska Veteran’s Cemetery at Alliance.

Flora F. Struble Scott (1935 - 2025)

Donna L. Contonis (née Berlie), 83, of Alliance, Nebraska, passed away on February 24, 2026, in Sun City, AZ.

Born on August 2, 1942, to Donald and Leona Berlie in Alliance, Nebraska, Donna grew up in Chadron, NE. She attended public schools there and subsequently graduated from Chadron State College in 1964. On June 21, 1964, she married the love of her life, Dan Contonis, in Chadron, Nebraska, in a beautiful combined ceremony performed by both a Methodist minister and a Greek Orthodox priest—symbolizing the unity and strength that would characterize their 62 years of marriage. Donna lived a life defined by devotion—to her faith, her family, her students, and her community.

Donna led an extraordinarily gratifying professional life as an elementary school teacher and later as the owner and operator of her own preschool. Even while building her career, she balanced the full responsibilities of being a devoted wife and deeply engaged mother. She had a natural gift with children—patient, nurturing, and encouraging—and her influence shaped countless young lives.

Donna was the proud and loving mother of three children: Deena Marie Kennell (Ryan Kennell), Christopher Daniel Contonis (Gayle Gomer Contonis), and Nikki Dion Dolan (Terry Dolan). She was also the cherished grandmother of eight grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense&nbsp;pride and joy. She is further survived by her husband Dan, her sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Bernard Cripps, and two beloved nephews.

An avid swimmer, Donna believed confidence began early—her children were swimming before they could walk. She not only taught her own children how to swim but taught hundreds of other youngsters with her involvement in the Red Cross swimming programs. Donna volunteered with CASA, advocating for abused and neglected children in the Foster Care system which was a program very dear to her heart. On top of all that, she was a phenomenal culinary artist. Donna learned to cook from her mother. Then, she learned to cook a multitude of Greek sweets and other traditional recipes from Dan’s mother. Additionally, she expressed her creativity through sewing and quilting, creating treasured pieces that will remain lasting family heirlooms. She also loved playing Bridge and Mahjong, valuing both the mental challenge and the cherished friendships formed around the table.

Her commitment to community was unwavering. Donna served in numerous leadership roles in civic and church organizations throughout her life. For many years, she faithfully served as Guardian of the Job’s Daughters Chapter in Alliance, mentoring and guiding young women with wisdom and compassion. Donna was a 50+ year member of PEO and held many leadership positions with them over the years. She was deeply active in Episcopal Church life, offering her leadership and dedication to three different parishes over the years.

Donna will be remembered for her boundless energy, her servant’s heart, her steady faith, and the deep love she extended to all who knew her. She lived fully, gave generously, and led with quiet strength. She was always first to offer support and concern for anyone who needed a hug or a quiet word of encouragement.

A Mass and Celebration of Life will be held at Advent Episcopal Church Sun City West, AZ April 11,2026, at 11:00 am. A Rite of Christian Burial and Interment will follow next August, in Alliance Nebraska.

Her legacy lives on in the generations she taught, the family she nurtured, and the community she helped strengthen.

Kevin Michael O’Brien, 69, of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, passed away Saturday, February 28, 2026. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 9 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Scottsbluff, with Pastors Jeff Grams and Phil Found officiating. Internment will be at Fairview Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established in care of his family; it will be designated at a later time.

Kevin was born on December 20, 1956, in Alliance, Nebraska. He was the fourth of four children born to Arlo and Wilma (Newton) O’Brien. He attended Alliance Public Schools and graduated in 1976.

He later moved to Scottsbluff, where he worked at the Panhandle CO-OP grocery store, the Village Twin movie theater, and Kmart. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Kevin had a lifelong love of science fiction and horror films. He especially enjoyed collecting Star Trek and Star Wars items, a hobby that brought him joy throughout his life. He also cared for many pets over the years, including dogs, reptiles, and fish.

Kevin is survived by his brothers, Ed (Susan) O’Brien and Brent (Kim) O’Brien, both of Scottsbluff; his sister, Michelle (Steve) Kaiser; and seven nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Marjorie “Marge” Marie (Wax) Turek&nbsp; left her earthly home and entered her spiritual home on February 28, 2026. She was born on November 18, 1949, in Wagner, South Dakota, to Lowell L “Snowball” and Opal Elizabeth (Baumgardner) Wax.

During her childhood, Marge’s family frequently traveled to various places throughout the United States and Canada. Their travels took them to South Carolina, Montana, California, Utah, Wyoming, Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Nebraska, Idaho, and South Dakota.

After the passing of her father in 1965, Marge, along with her two siblings (LaVerne and Rick), went to live with their grandparents, JL and Gladys Wax, in Hemingford, Nebraska.

Marge graduated from Hemingford High School in 1968. Later that year, on August 31, she married Don Turek. Together, they settled in the country west of Hemingford, where they began their life on the farm and ranch and had their four children who gave her immense joy: Tricia (Russ) McKeehan of Falcon, Colorado, Todd (Melisa) Turek of Hemingford, Nebraska, Kimberli Turek and Troy (Molly) Turek of Hemingford, Nebraska.

Marge was a devoted member of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church for 58 years. She served as a member of the Altar Society for the same duration and took on the role of Altar Society President for 12 years. Marge was the General Manager of the Holiday Inn Express, now Quality Inn Hotels, in Alliance, Nebraska, for 29 years until her retirement in June 2023.

Following her retirement, Marge worked as a custodian and para-substitute at Hemingford Public Schools. She found immense fulfillment in supporting the pre-kindergarten students.

Marge’s greatest source of pride and joy was her grandchildren: Haylee McKeehan, Brady (Carli) Turek, Makayla (Cade) Payne, Brooke Turek, Jackson McKeehan, Brian Turek, Alysen Turek, Rick Turek, and Darin Turek. She was deeply involved in their lives, attending as many of their activities as possible and rarely missing any events from elementary school through college. She was also known as “Grandma Marge” to many.

Marge is survived by her husband, Don Turek, children, grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Kimberli Turek, and her brothers LaVerne and Rick Wax.

A memorial service for Marge will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Hemingford, Nebraska with Father Matt Koperski officiating.&nbsp; The Rosary will begin at 9:00 AM, with Mass at 10:00 AM and burial will follow in the Hemingford Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to Jane’s Closet (Breast Cancer Awareness) or Bobcats Beating Cancer. Marge was loved by many and will be deeply missed.

Eric J Lashley, 51 of Alliance, Nebraska passed away unexpectedly at his home on Monday, February 23, 2026.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, March 6, 2026, at 1:00 pm at the Eagles Club, 1520 W 3rd St, Alliance, NE. A private family interment will be held at a later date. At his request cremation has taken place. Eric was born on May 9, 1974, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to John M and Joan (Hauke) Lashley. He obtained his early education at Bridgeport, Nebraska and graduated from Banner County High School with the class of 1992. He later graduated from Southeast Community College in 1994 with a degree in diesel technology.

Eric married his true love, Codi Roberts on December 13, 2014, in Las Vegas, Nevada and they made their home in Alliance, Nebraska.

Eric was a long time truck driver and enjoyed the open road, making friends wherever he would go. He had several people in his trucking community who he considered brothers.

Although he didn’t get to do it as often as he liked, Eric loved hunting, 4-wheeling and farming and was a member of the Bean Board for many years. He treasured spending time with his family and friends. He was a true Patriot with a fierce love of Country and believed strongly in individual rights.

Survivors include his wife Codi Lashley and son Remington; parents John and Joan Lashley; siblings Stacy (Dan) Seier and their children Bryce, Conrad, Rachelle and Evan Seier; Shawn Lashley and his children Samantha, Andrea, Cassie, and Tyler Lashley; Heather (Zach) Adams and their children Audrey, Barry, and Bridget Adams; mother-in-law Susan Roberts; sisters-in-law Teresa (Tracy) Jones and their children Madison, Zeb and Gabe and Cassie (Justen) West and their children Anya and Brendan as well as several great nieces and nephews and numerous cousins, aunts and uncles. Erics other children TJ, Christina, Casey and stepchildren Kristina and Cody were also very much loved by him.

Eric was preceded in death by his Paternal and Maternal grandparents, special great aunt Alta Lewis; grandmother-in-law Vera Jean Koch; and father-in-law William Roberts.

Lucille Iossi Lineback, 95, died early Sunday morning February 1, 2026 at Box Butte Hospital in Alliance, Nebraska. She had been residing at Highland Park Care Center in Alliance for the past 1 ½ years. Before that she lived for past 45 years in Scottsbluff.

She was born to Alfred and Ida Iossi on December 1, 1930 and grew up on the family farm north of Alliance. She married Bernard Lineback November 8, 1950, and they had 2 sons, Steven Wayne Lineback and Douglas Ray Lineback. Lucille and Bernie divorced after 25 years.&nbsp; Lucille raised her sons, worked on the family farm, and was a telephone operator for many years. She loved gardening, crocheting and other handiwork, her sons and their families, and her beloved dogs. She had a soft heart and was a long-time supporter and donated to causes for veterans, animal shelters and boy’s town.

She is survived by her children, Steve (Christie), Doug (Holly) and her grandchildren, Ryan (Steve &amp; Gina), Anjuli and Chandra (Doug &amp; Holly), and her great-grandson Asher Douglas Archuleta (Chandra and Vincent Archuleta). She was preceded in death by her brothers; Fraedrick, Kenneth, and Alvin, and her beloved grandson Ashley Lineback (Steve and Gina).

Memorial services will be Saturday, March 7, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Alliance.

Robert "Bob" Joseph Southwell, 69 of Greybull, Wyoming, passed away February 11, 2026 surrounded by his children.

Bob was born August 25, 1956 in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Robert and Mary Monica (Leonard) Southwell.&nbsp; Bob was a dedicated Conductor on the Railroad until his retirement.

Bob enjoyed socializing with his pool league and Spur buddies.&nbsp; You could also catch him walking the golf course.&nbsp; Bob had several other interests but these were his most recent endeavors. Bob was also a proud father, grandfather, and great grandfather.&nbsp; Bob is survived by his three daughters, Melanie (Bill) Jackson of Fort Collins, CO, Mary Moore, Bridgeport, NE, and Bobbie (Derek) Stuart, Bayard, NE.&nbsp; Survived by grandchildren, Will (Krystine) Jackson, Austin (Shell) Jackson, Dylan Jackson, Jakob Jackson, Addison Jackson, Kaitlynn (Luke) Moore, Karson Moore, Kinzee Moore, Jason Stuart, Brooklynn Stuart, and Logan Stuart.&nbsp; And three great grandchildren Issac and Ivan Jackson and Harper Dalbey.&nbsp; As well as several nephews and nieces.&nbsp; Along with his parents Bob is preceded in death by two brothers Dennis Southwell and Thomas Southwell and sister Cindy Allen.

A cremation has taken place and a service will be decided at a later date.

Marge Koester, 1936–2026 Educator, Musician, and World traveler, Dies at 89

Christened Marjorie Ann Mischnick, Marge was born in Blair, Nebraska, November 1936.&nbsp; She was&nbsp;the eldest of five surviving children born to Walter and Hilda (Probst) Mischnick.   

Marge Spent most of her childhood in Alliance and graduated from Alliance High School in 1954.&nbsp;She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in education from Colorado State College, and a master’s&nbsp;degree in educational psychology from the University of Nebraska in 1964.

On June 24, 1961 Marge married Bill Koester of Alliance, Nebraska.&nbsp; Together they traveled the world&nbsp;setting foot on every continent but Antarctica. In retirement Marge and Bill moved to Fort Collins Colorado and became active members of Trinity&nbsp;Lutheran Church and avid supporters of the Fort Collins Symphony.  After her Bill’s death in 2015,&nbsp;Marge returned to Alliance and took up residence at the Crossroads care facility where John Sibbitt&nbsp;became her constant companion.  

Marge read a very, very large number of books in her lifetime.&nbsp;&nbsp; She belonged to local book groups in&nbsp;both Alliance and Ft Collins and typically read something for herself in addition to her book group’s&nbsp;monthly selection.

Marge taught kindergarten in the Alliance school system and later in life taught for Western&nbsp;Nebraska Community College.  She was the principal organist an at Immanuel Lutheran Church in&nbsp;Alliance for many years and also played regularly at St John’s Lutheran Church in Alliance, and&nbsp;Trinity Lutheran in Fort Collins.  In addition, Marge played for a myriad of wedding and funeral&nbsp;ceremonies at many local churches.

Marge is survived by her son and daughter in law; Dave Koester and Jingjing Du of Redondo Beach,&nbsp;California, her brother; Ron Mishnick in Alliance, and her sister; Carol Seeger who resides in St&nbsp;Louis, Missouri.   

Marge leaves behind a wide circle of extended family members and friends. Those who knew her&nbsp;will remember a gregarious soul who combined curiosity, exuberance and warmth — someone&nbsp;eager to go adventuring and equally happy at a kitchen table with a cup of coffee and time to talk.

Marge drew her last breath in the afternoon of February 3rd 2026 surrounded by family, she was 89.&nbsp;

A celebration of life service for Marge is tentatively scheduled in June of 2026 at St John’s Lutheran&nbsp;Church in Alliance.

Marge Koester (1936 - 2026)

Sandra Lou (Eggers) Abbott, 81, of New Paris, passed away at her residence on February 10, 2026.

She was born on February 16, 1944, in Lexington, Nebraska, to George and Elphe (Baugher) Eggers. On December 30, 1962, she married Jack L. Abbott in Crawford, Nebraska. Together they shared over 63 years of marriage and were blessed with two daughters.

Sandra is survived by her loving husband, Jack L. Abbott; her daughters, Deb (Cory) Hall of Winterset, Iowa, and Polly Goeglein of New Paris, Indiana; and her cherished grandchildren, Bryson Hall, Whitney (Luke) Moulton, and Trevor Hall, Alexis (Jarrett) Walbolt, Brock (Hannah) Goeglein, Caleb Jack (Kennedy) Goeglein, Dahlia Goeglein, Lamar Goeglein, Andrew Goeglein, and Julian Goeglein, She was also blessed with great-grandchildren, Theodore and Elliott Moulton. In addition, she is survived by her brothers, Randy (Helen) Eggers of Idaho and Jeff Eggers of Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Gordon Eggers, Russell Eggers, and Marlene Mohler.

Sandra worked as an office manager for the family business, Jack’s Refrigeration in Alliance, Nebraska. She later served as a bookkeeper alongside her husband during his nine years of ministry at Gordon Berean Church in Gordon, Nebraska. A devoted pastor’s wife, Sandra faithfully supported the church and its members with grace and dedication.

She loved reading, sewing, and quilting, and found great joy in teaching Sunday School and AWANA. Sandra deeply loved being in church and had a steadfast love for the Lord. She was a consummate helpmate, faithfully serving her family and others with a willing and generous heart.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Peoples Bible Church in Benton, with a memorial service to follow at 4:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor John Randolph.

James “Jimmy” Edward Butcher, 68, of Alliance, NE, died peacefully at home on January 19, 2026.

Jimmy was born in Greeley, CO, on April 6, 1957, to James Eugene Butcher and Teresa Ellen Cody Butcher. He was adventurous from the time he could crawl, keeping his mother on her toes trying to keep track of him. Over his lifetime, he had a variety of occupations, from working on his grandparents’ ranch in his youth; babysitter; caretaker; the Burlington Northern Railroad; construction jobs; and tree trimming and removal. Tree trimming and removal was his true calling, and he had much pride and satisfaction from owning and operating Jim Butcher’s Tree Service for 25 years.

Jimmy’s life motto was, “If you’re not living on the edge, you’re taking up too much space.” He lived his life to the fullest up to his final day. He made friends everywhere he went. His favorite way of spending time was on his motorcycle with a group of wonderful friends, his wife, and—yes—even his dog, Marshall, who rode with him. He traveled to many areas of the country on his motorcycle, but the beauty of Montana and the Beartooth Mountains always called his name.

Planning to be a lifelong bachelor, he was the first one of a group of three friends to marry. On November 29, 1996, he married Dawn Pebley, gaining a wife and daughter, Chelsea, at the age of 40.

Jimmy is survived by his wife, Dawn; and daughter, Chelsea (Jeremy) Kuhn, of Laramie, WY; sisters Rita Arnoldy and Mary Butcher, of Sterling, CO; and grandsons, Jace and Atley Kuhn, of Laramie, WY; mother-in-law Phyllis Pebley, of Alliance, NE; and constant companion, Marshall. Special cousins Jon and Kathy Schommer; Barb Mart; Sandy Snow; Richard Schommer; David Schommer; Janet Schommer; Cheryl (Cody) and Mike Garcia. Nieces and nephews Sarah and Keith Wernsman; Justin and Julie Arnoldy; Kyle and Jody Arnoldy; Cionne Butcher; and Jake Breidenbach.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Teresa Butcher; grandparents J.O. Butcher, Kathryn Butcher, Edward Cody, and Mary Cody; father-in-law Marvin Pebley; and brother-in-law Tim Arnoldy.

Clarice Marlene (Ritter) Mills, with her family by her side, passed away on Monday, December 22, 2025. She was 83 years old.

Clarice was born on January 31, 1942 to Clarence and Pauline Ritter. She graduated from Alliance High School in 1960 and attended Duchesne School of Nursing for one year before moving home to marry Gary “Bud” Mills. This union lasted 62 wonderful years until Bud’s passing in 2023.

Alliance was home to Clarice and Bud, where they raised three boys, Tim, Scott, and Jeff. Clarice’s boys were her greatest love and adventure; she rarely missed a baseball, football, or basketball game throughout their years growing up. As a proud mom, she would cheer at the games, often letting officials (and opposing team members) know if a call or play was not to her liking. As a family, they enjoyed many family camping and fishing trips, as well as long car trips to the east and west coasts to visit family and friends. Many trips included their kids’ friends, who were always welcome and who were considered family, as well.

Time spent as a family was her priority, which continued as the boys married and started families of their own. The role of grandparent was taken very seriously. Clarice was a loving and devoted grandma to 9 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Her front door was always open, and their house was a popular pit-stop for many, often including games, a heartfelt chat, and cookies and mints for anyone who needed a snack.

Along with her family, Clarice’s many friends were very important to her. Rarely did she go somewhere that she didn’t see someone she knew. Among her many friends, some of her kids’ friends even called her ‘Mom’, and her grandkids’ friends called her ‘Grandma’. She was loved by all who knew her. Her genuine warmth, kindness, acceptance of everyone, and calm demeanor was hope-giving and uplifting in this world, and will be greatly missed.

Throughout her life, Clarice also worked outside the home at Alliance National Bank, and then Western Heritage Credit Union until her retirement. After retirement, she spent many days volunteering, attending card parties and coffee dates, sewing quilts for her family, taking care of her beloved cats, and doing what she loved most - simply going for a drive with Bud to get a coffee drink and cruise the town.

She is survived by sons, Tim (Linda), Scott (Tamra), and Jeff (Brenda), all of Alliance; grandkids, Jamie (Matt) Weingart, Jessica Cooksley, Myles (Cassie Barth) Mills, Gary Mills, Jacob (Arielle) Mills, Brettni (Tristan) Heldenbrand, Cassidy (Preston) Meier, Jordan (Sam) Mills, and Shelbi Mills; as well as 16 great-grandchildren; sisters, Claudia Lichty of Elizabeth, Colorado, and Colleen Seeley of Alliance, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Clarice was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, where there will be a celebration of Clarice’s life on Saturday, February 21, 2026 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a meal at the West Side Event Center.

Ted was born January 18, 1943 in Alliance, Nebraska to Ray and Irene (Vogel) Underwood.&nbsp; He graduated from Alliance High School in 1960 and later served his country in the United States Army.&nbsp; Following his honorable discharge, Ted returned home and began farming and ranching, a way of life he remained devoted to throughout his years.

On April 13, 1967, Ted was united in marriage to Shirley K. Prochazka in Hot Springs, South Dakota.

Ted never worked a day in his life, not because he wasn’t a hard worker, but because he loved it so much. When Ted wasn’t farming and working the ranch, he loved to travel, camp and hunt for rocks with his children. Later, when Tom and Crystal grew big enough to drive a four-wheeler, four-wheeling and fishing became a favorite pastime. After the rock collection, started by his parents Ray and Irene, was moved back to the farm, he found lots of enjoyment showing the collection to people from all around the country. Ted also took several memorable trips with close friends Ron and Randy over the years. He was always in search of the next adventure, a new sight to see, or a feed yard to look at. Another source of joy was his 6 grandchildren, Lydia Hauger, Colton Buskirk, Adelyn Buskirk, Jack Underwood, Ben Underwood and Ivy Underwood.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Underwood of Alliance; his children, Lisa (Chad) Hauger, Tom (Anna) Underwood and Crystal (Bryan) Buskirk, all of Alliance; his 6 grandchildren; his brothers, Garry (Jo Ellen) Underwood and Jerry (Connie) Underwood, all of Alliance; and several nieces, nephews and extended family members.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 16, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the Alliance Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, February 15, 2026 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Memorials may be given to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Ted L. Underwood (1943 - 2026)

Edwin E. Rhoads, 81, of Alliance, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 5, 2026 at his home with family at his bedside.

Edwin was born January 21, 1945 in Houston, Texas. Shortly thereafter, his family moved to Chadron, Nebraska, where he grew up on Dead Horse Creek. He attended college in Chadron, Nebraska, and after graduating, moved with his family to Alliance, Nebraska, where he lived the remainder of his life.

Edwin met his beloved wife, Sharon Rhoads, and they were married on March 18, 1967. They shared 59 years of marriage.

Edwin taught fifth grade for Alliance City Schools for many years. He became fondly known to his students as “Mr. Toads,” a nickname that reflected the affection and respect they had for him.

He loved attending his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sporting events, hunting and fishing, and spending time talking with his many friends.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Rhoads of Alliance, Nebraska; daughters, Tabetha Garza (Simon) of Alliance, Nebraska, and Kodee Wignall of Gering, Nebraska; grandchildren, Ashley Peterson of Alliance, Anthony Garza (Mandy) of North Platte, Nebraska, Alisha Hernandez (Jake) of Alliance, Aaron Garza of Alliance, Andrew Garza (Davina) of Alliance, and Shane Wignall (Makinley) of Alliance; 14 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Anita Rhoads of Rapid City, South Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin E. Rhoads and Anita M. (Lewis) Rhoads, and his brother, Ralph Rhoads of Lincoln, Nebraska.

Per Ed’s request, no funeral will be held. There will be a graveside service and burial at a later date.

Thomas Wesley Folchert (2026)

Claudia Merlin (Maret) Benda, passed away on January 22, 2026, with her family by her side.

Memorial Service will be Saturday, February 7th at 11:00 AM at Bates-Gould Chapel in Alliance, Nebraska.

&nbsp;Claudia was born on January 24, 1937, in Curtis Nebraska. She was the 5th of five children born to Daniel and Ruie (Wood) Maret. She grew up attending the local grade school and Cutis High School and graduated from UNSA in the Spring of 1954. On October 22 she married Gary Benda. In the 1960’s their family grew when they welcomed their son Randy and daughter Tonya.

She was happy being a farm wife and mother. She served on the district 40 school board for seven years. She really enjoyed the rural community and the many friendships she made there. She will be remembered for her skill in making great tasting food for family. She loved to cook for everyone including friends that helped with branding, wheat harvest and several other occasions. Her specialties included cinnamon rolls, fried chicken, roast and scotcharoos. When mom cooked there was never a complaint, just people wanting a second or third helping.

Gary did the farming and Claudia did much of the business details. She enjoyed living in the country close to the farm. The long work hours and stress that come with farming kept the family close together.

She and Gary spent 60 happy years together and welcomed their granddaughters and, later, step grandchildren into their family. They enjoyed being grandparents. One of the things that gave them the most delight was attending the many activities the grandkids were involved in; softball games, volleyball, track and dance recitals.

They were fortunate enough to travel to many of their favorite destinations. When asked which one she enjoyed the most, Claudia always had trouble deciding. Eventually she did say she loved Australia a lot. She was grateful that they were able to travel for several years. Many of their travels included their closest friends.

When they moved into town she served as a hospice volunteer. She visited many patients in Hospice Care. Those visits meant a lot to everyone involved. She also loved to do work in her yard which was always beautiful and included all her favorite flowers.

She was an avid reader and spent a lot of time with her favorite authors. She loved playing golf and spent many happy days playing the sport with close friends. She also loved to watch Nebraska Volleyball and Football. She hated it when she did not get the games on television or the radio. We were fortunate enough to be able to take her to a Nebraska Volleyball game in Lincoln. It was a lot of fun and she loved checking it off her bucket list. The other thing she loved to do was to take an occasional trip to Deadwood. She went many times with Gary and after his passing she went with her close friends.

Claudia is survived by her son, Randy, her daughter and husband, Tonya and Doug Thomas, daughter in law Kerri Benda, her sister, Hilda Wolgamott;&nbsp; grandchildren, Shayla (Jarred) Ruth, Kelsey Sylvester, Alyshia Benda, Jacob (Olivia) Thomas, Maria (Corbin) Spells and great grandchildren, Moxley Russell, Reese Spells, Phoebe Spells and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her husband, Gary, her parents, Ruie and Daniel Maret and her husband’s parents, Mildred and Walter Benda and 3 siblings.

Claudia Merlin (Maret) Benda (1937 - 2026)

Memorial Services will be Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 10:00am at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Alliance, NE with Father Matt Koperski officiating. A wake service will be Friday, January 30, 2026, at 7:00pm at the church. Interment at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery will be Monday, February 2, 2026, at 10:30am.

Robert “Bob” Jatczak, age 87, was born a proud Michigander on December 8, 1937 in Bay City, Michigan, the oldest child of Edmond and Gertrude (Kensa) Jatczak.&nbsp; He enlisted in the Army National Guard of the State of Michigan at the age of 17 and a year later enlisted into active service with the Air Force.&nbsp; He trained at Lackland Air Force Base and Chanute Air Force Base prior to being assigned to the 307th Air Refueling Bombardment Wing, Lincoln Air Force Base, Lincoln, Nebraska.&nbsp;

Temporary duty assignments took Bob to Newfoundland, Greenland, England and the Azores.&nbsp; He was assigned to fly on KC-97 Stratotankers, the air refueling planes servicing the Strategic Air Command.&nbsp; As a crew chief and Airman 2nd Class E-3 Bob was responsible for the safe operation of the plane and its payload, the in-air hook-ups of the refueling boom, fuel dumps and boom releases.&nbsp; Bob honorably completed his active Air Force duty in 1960 but continued to serve in the Air Force Reserves until 1963.&nbsp;

Still living in Lincoln, Bob joined the Lincoln Police Department (LPD) in 1962 and rose to the rank of Lieutenant.&nbsp; He assumed many responsibilities for the LPD but most enjoyed his time as a motorcycle officer and helicopter patrol commander.&nbsp; While working for the LPD Bob graduated from the University of Nebraska Omaha with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice.&nbsp; Advancements in his career took him to Broken Bow, Kearney and finally to Alliance in 1988 where he served as Chief of Police in those three communities.&nbsp; He retired from law enforcement in 1999 after 37 years of service.&nbsp; Not one to let grass grow under his feet, Bob then worked part-time in various capacities for the State of Nebraska Game and Parks Commission until 2024 when health challenges became too great.

Bob’s professional affiliations included the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Police Officers Association of Nebraska where he served on the Board of Directors and was President from 1984 to 1985, and the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center in Grand Island, Nebraska.&nbsp; He also gave his time and talents to the Red Cross and Youth Development Center Boards, both in Kearney; The South Central Community Mental Health Center Advisory Board, the University of Nebraska Kearney Foundation, the Kearney Catholic High School Foundation, the Kearney Police Retirement Committee, Keep Alliance Beautiful Board, Panhandle Special Olympics volunteer, Alliance Habitat for Humanity construction team and Board, Alliance Public Schools Foundation Board, and St. Agnes Academy Foundation.&nbsp; Bob’s Catholic faith provided him great strength and comfort throughout his life.&nbsp; He was a faithful parishioner no matter where life took him and embraced Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Alliance as his final parish family.

Bob was an extremely proud “Pops”, “Father”, “Papason”, “Dad”, “Papa” to the five children he had with his first wife, Darlene (Kucera) Jatczak, whom he married in 1960.&nbsp; Carrying on his legacy are Barbara (Pete) Sagmiller of Spring, Texas; Mark (Kim) Jatczak of Papillion, Nebraska; John (Heather) Jatczak of Marstons Mills, Massachusetts; Matthew Jatczak of League City, Texas; and Julie (Jimmie) Hart of Golden, Colorado.&nbsp; He leaves behind his wife of 35 years, Tracy (Sisler Baer) Jatczak, and two step children: Brian (Jessica) Baer of Kearney, Nebraska and Leslie (Court) Cook of Gering, Nebraska.&nbsp; Bob was blessed with 17 grandchildren who survive him, including: Jason Sagmiller, Ashley Taylor, Kari Sagmiller, Ryan Sagmiller, Ashley Johnson, Amber Kloeckl, Luke Jatczak, Nathan Jatczak, Noelle Jatczak, Olivia Jatczak, Liam Jatczak, Jake Jatczak, Addy Hart, McKenna Baer, Joie Galaska, Lily Cook and Riley Cook.&nbsp; The growing number of great grandchildren includes Diesel, Channing, Chase, Lanie, Cole, Eliana, Kaden, Bennet, Cooper, Emma, plus two more on the way.&nbsp; There are numerous nieces and nephews who will miss their favorite uncle.&nbsp; Bob is also survived by his two sisters, Darlene Birrell of Lorton, Virginia and Karen (Don) Kossick of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and his sister-in-law, Rebecca Sisler, of Lacey, Washington.&nbsp; Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Edmond and Gertrude, his brother Arthur Jatczak and Arthur’s wife Diane, his brothers-in-law Vernon Birrell and James Sisler, grandson in-law Aaron Taylor, his mother-in-law, Ruth Sisler, and his first wife Darlene.

Bob’s love of fishing and the great outdoors was well known to those who knew and loved him.&nbsp; He could swap fish tales with the best of them and was always thinking about the next best fishing hole.&nbsp; Along with Tracy, he was a frequent traveler to Alaska where they would fill their freezer with salmon and halibut and just marvel at the majesty of Alaska.&nbsp; There is a rumor going around that Bob made it into heaven via a side trip to Alaska.

The last year of Bob’s life was difficult.&nbsp; He received a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in November 2024 on top of a diagnosis of colorectal cancer that he had beaten a year earlier.&nbsp; In 2025 alone he endured nine rounds of chemotherapy, two emergency surgeries, and a fractured hip from a fall.&nbsp; Ultimately the cancer overwhelmed his body and Bob passed into eternity on November 9, 2025, in his own bed and surrounded by loved ones.

The family is immensely grateful for the kindness and care Bob received from everyone at Box Butte General Hospital, Sidney Regional Medical Center, Morrill County Community Hospital and Home Health, and Brookestone Hospice.&nbsp; The financial support received from Jane’s Closet was instrumental in getting Bob to and from cancer treatment.&nbsp; Last but not least, Bob and Tracy were showered with love and support from friends and family and it is forever written on their hearts.&nbsp;

A date for funeral services, interment at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery in Alliance and a celebration will be set in the coming months to allow for family attendance.

In lieu of flowers or plants the family suggests donations to St. Agnes Academy Foundation, Holy Rosary Catholic Church Building Fund, Jane’s Closet, or Police Officer’s Association of Nebraska.

Interment at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery will be Monday, February 2, 2026, at 10:30am.Robert “Bob” Jatczak, age 87, was born a proud Michigander on December 8, 1937 in Bay City, Michigan, the oldest child of Edmond and Gertrude (Kensa) Jatczak.&nbsp; He enlisted in the Army National Guard of the State of Michigan at the age of 17 and a year later enlisted into active service with the Air Force.&nbsp; He trained at Lackland Air Force Base and Chanute Air Force Base prior to being assigned to the 307th Air Refueling Bombardment Wing, Lincoln Air Force Base, Lincoln, Nebraska.&nbsp;Temporary duty assignments took Bob to Newfoundland, Greenland, England and the Azores.&nbsp; He was assigned to fly on KC-97 Stratotankers, the air refueling planes servicing the Strategic Air Command.&nbsp; As a crew chief and Airman 2nd Class E-3 Bob was responsible for the safe operation of the plane and its payload, the in-air hook-ups of the refueling boom, fuel dumps and boom releases.&nbsp; Bob honorably completed his active Air Force duty in 1960 but continued to serve in the Air Force Reserves until 1963.&nbsp;Still living in Lincoln, Bob joined the Lincoln Police Department (LPD) in 1962 and rose to the rank of Lieutenant.&nbsp; He assumed many responsibilities for the LPD but most enjoyed his time as a motorcycle officer and helicopter patrol commander.&nbsp; While working for the LPD Bob graduated from the University of Nebraska Omaha with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice.&nbsp; Advancements in his career took him to Broken Bow, Kearney and finally to Alliance in 1988 where he served as Chief of Police in those three communities.&nbsp; He retired from law enforcement in 1999 after 37 years of service.&nbsp; Not one to let grass grow under his feet, Bob then worked part-time in various capacities for the State of Nebraska Game and Parks Commission until 2024 when health challenges became too great.Bob’s professional affiliations included the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Police Officers Association of Nebraska where he served on the Board of Directors and was President from 1984 to 1985, and the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center in Grand Island, Nebraska.&nbsp; He also gave his time and talents to the Red Cross and Youth Development Center Boards, both in Kearney; The South Central Community Mental Health Center Advisory Board, the University of Nebraska Kearney Foundation, the Kearney Catholic High School Foundation, the Kearney Police Retirement Committee, Keep Alliance Beautiful Board, Panhandle Special Olympics volunteer, Alliance Habitat for Humanity construction team and Board, Alliance Public Schools Foundation Board, and St. Agnes Academy Foundation.&nbsp; Bob’s Catholic faith provided him great strength and comfort throughout his life.&nbsp; He was a faithful parishioner no matter where life took him and embraced Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Alliance as his final parish family.Bob was an extremely proud “Pops”, “Father”, “Papason”, “Dad”, “Papa” to the five children he had with his first wife, Darlene (Kucera) Jatczak, whom he married in 1960.&nbsp; Carrying on his legacy are Barbara (Pete) Sagmiller of Spring, Texas; Mark (Kim) Jatczak of Papillion, Nebraska; John (Heather) Jatczak of Marstons Mills, Massachusetts; Matthew Jatczak of League City, Texas; and Julie (Jimmie) Hart of Golden, Colorado.&nbsp; He leaves behind his wife of 35 years, Tracy (Sisler Baer) Jatczak, and two step children: Brian (Jessica) Baer of Kearney, Nebraska and Leslie (Court) Cook of Gering, Nebraska.&nbsp; Billy Joe Dunn, 86, passed away on January 17, 2026, in Alliance, Nebraska. Born on March 16, 1939, in Sondheimer, Louisiana, Bill lived a life marked by dedication—to his country, his work, and most of all, his family.

In July 1958, Bill answered the call to serve his nation by enlisting in the United States Army. He completed basic training at Fort Bragg in North Carolina and was later stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington. His service included a deployment to South Korea for one year and four months. His time in the military reflected the same sense of duty and perseverance that would define the rest of his life.

Following his honorable discharge in July 1962, Bill embarked on a career that became both a livelihood and a passion. For approximately three decades, he worked as a power transmission line contractor, a job he truly loved and looked forward to each day. Even after retiring from this demanding field, Bill returned to it as an inspector, continuing to contribute his expertise and commitment well into his later years.

Bill’s legacy is deeply rooted in the love he had for his family. He is survived by his children, Donald Dunn of Sahuarita, Arizona; Sheila Becker of Augusta, Georgia; and Melissa and Dale Van Galder III of Alliance, Nebraska. He also leaves behind thirteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren who carry forward his memory. In addition to his children and grandchildren, Bill is survived by two sisters whose lives were touched by his enduring presence.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus Ira Dunn and Rubie Stanley Dunn (Canterberry), both of Sondheimer, Louisiana. Several brothers and sisters also passed&nbsp;before him, along with two beloved grandchildren.

Bill was known for being a determined individual who always had the best interests of his family at heart. He encouraged those around him—especially his children and&nbsp; grandchildren—to pursue success in whatever paths they chose. His strength of character and unwavering support left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know him.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Highland Park Assisted Living and Highland Park Nursing facilities for their compassionate care during Bill’s final chapter. Special thanks to Roberta Johnson for her friendship and companionship. A special thank you goes to Dylan Van Galder; CNA—Bill’s grandson—whose presence at the facility brought comfort during this time.

Francis Lloyd Mix, 96, of Gering, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at his home. His memorial service will be held at 10am on Friday, January 30, 2026, at Bridgman Funeral Home in Scottsbluff with Pastor Rick Reisig officiating. Interment will take place at the Broadwater Cemetery at a later time. Francis Lloyd Mix was born in Port Orchard, Washington on August 15, 1929, to Floyd Maxson Mix and Minnie (Jorgensen) Mix. Francis grew up in. Hay Springs Nebraska. In 1949 he married Deloris Bredenkamp and they had 2 children. In 1952 he enlisted in the Army until 1954 where he became a corporal in the Korean war. In the early years he worked for Aero freight. He then worked for Culligan and also ran the gas station on 3rd street for Don Cheatle. He really liked delivering fuel where he met and made a lot of new friends. He then worked selling cars for Wegner Chevrolet. In 1972 he married Carole Peters. They ran Trailerville Court together. For a time, he had his own car sales on Flack Avenue in Alliance. They later moved to Gering Nebraska. Francis drove bus for Ameristar for 17 years. He loved this job taking trips to Prairie Wind Casino and to Denver. Francis and Carole loved going to sporting events for their grandchildren. They won an award for going to so many events. Francis loved old cars and spent most of his retirement fixing them up. He was a jokester and loved going to coffee with his buddies. He was deeply loved and will be missed. He was very fortunate to live to be 96 years old and stay in his home. He had amazing caregivers. Over the years Francis has gotten several dogs from the animal shelter. He deeply loved his dog, Mindy.

He is survived by his daughter Mary Bently and son Myron Mix; his stepdaughters Allene (Paul) Dowling and Vylena (Rod) Prochazka; 8 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

He is proceeded in death by his parents and siblings Maxine Bodey, Vetta Dahman, Tommy Mix and Adabel Lundy.
