Western Nebraska Community College will celebrate National First-Generation Student Day on Wednesday, Nov. 10. A first-generation student is any student whose parents do not have a bachelor's (four-year) degree or higher. The event will also be an opportunity for first-generation students to learn more about TRIO Student Support Services, which include tutoring, supplemental instruction, advising, and much more. TRIO staff will hand out snacks, word puzzles, and 1st-Gen stickers to celebrate the college's First-Generation students.
This year's National First-Generation Student Day celebrates the 56th anniversary of the signing of the 1965 Higher Education Act (HEA). which has helped millions of first-generation, low-income/under-resourced students persist to degree completion. WNCC will celebrate First-Generation Days Nov. 8-10 with a variety of activities on all three campuses. TRIO Student Support Services hosts the celebration to highlight the importance of these students to the community and nation. This is the fifth year the college has marked the annual event.
