On Thursday, September 10, 2026, at 12:11pm, a Scotts Bluff County Deputy witnessed a train derailment in Mitchell NE.
An eastbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe coal train suffered a partial derailment, with four cars overturned and several others off the tracks. The Mitchell Police Chief, other Deputies, and the Mitchell Fire Department were on scene within minutes. A Deputy used a fire extinguisher to put out a small fire. There are no injuries and no danger to the public.
The rail crossings in or near Mitchell on 22nd Avenue, 19th Avenue, Center Avenue, 10th Street, and County Road CR 15 are closed.
We do know the cause of the derailment, nor do we have a timeline for reopening.
Railroad personnel are on scene now.
