SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. — Western Nebraska Community College will begin hosting non-credit Construction Trades classes at Western Sugar Cooperative in September.
"We're grateful for Western Sugar's partnership that has allowed us to dedicate a space to these programs," WNCC Workforce Director Doug Mader said. "These programs will help fill the need for trades workers in the Panhandle."
The first course is an is an Introductory Electrician Training Course starting September 14, running on Monday's and Wednesday's from 6 - 9 p.m., and Saturday's from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. The class runs eight weeks, concluding on November 7. Tuition is $1,500 plus a textbook for $99.99. Students do not need tools to enroll in the class. Financial aid is available for those who qualify.
The Electrician Training course will provide learners with foundational knowledge and skills necessary to begin a career as an electrician's apprentice. The curriculum emphasizes electrical theory, basic mathematics, safety practices, tools, terminology, and hands-on training.
The electrical course is the first of several WNCC plans to host at the Western Sugar facility, including an HVAC course, and additional courses for plumbing, and industrial maintenance that will be announced for 2027. Additionally, WNCC will be working with area schools to offer non-credit trades courses for high school students. These courses will give students a chance to experience multiple trades that interest them, and to gather skills and knowledge to start careers post high school.
