The Chadron Volunteer Fire Department continues to fight a fire south of the city on Highway 385, east of Chadron State Park.
Chadron fire crews were called to the 23 acre fire at 12:53 a.m. on Sept. 6.

"We did have a fire investigator come to confirm that it was a lightening strike," Chadron Fire Chief Branden Martens said. "It would have been from the Friday night lightening that came through. It just got into some punky wood and hung out there for awhile. The winds kind of came up two nights ago and that's what helped stir it around."
Martens said nine trucks from Chadron and four forest service trucks assisted with the fire. He also said the SEAT plane out of Chadron made a drop on the fire.

"We pulled out last night at 8 p.m.," Martens said. "We have crews on it right now, still too. It's not 100% out, but we're working that way right now. We've got a pretty good grasp on it. We're fighting some hot spots and things like that today. We had 30 MPH winds yesterday for a couple hours so that was good, bad...it helped show face to a lot of things that are still hot."
