Darlene Burneda Jacobs of Alliance, NE passed away Saturday, March 30, 2024 at the age of 91. She was born August 7, 1932 in Hay Springs, NE to Fred and Minnie Mae (Kutschara) Sellmer.
She attended country school in Hay Springs, Sidney, Rushville and Heron, Montana. She graduated from Alliance in 1950. Her oldest brother and Darlene walked 1-2 miles to school in the sand hills. If they were lucky, they were able to catch a ride with the school teachers.
She married James (Jimmy) Jacobs in Sterling, CO on May 18, 1950. They had 3 children, Ronald Jacobs, Rebecca Leisy, and Vickie Grimes.
Her husband passed away on April 30, 1987 from a very tragic accident. After marrying Jimmy, she moved to the farm that Jimmy was born and raised at. She learned to do many things: drive truck, tractors, and combines. She had a big garden every year and raised her own chickens. Due to having a big garden, she canned everything she could to feed her family. She made her own bread and churned her own butter. Darlene worked at Crossroads Assisted Living for 18 years, retiring at the age of 80 years old. She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary
Darlene is survived by her son, Ronald Jacobs and daughters, Rebecca Leisy and Vickie Grimes (Larry Grimes) all of Alliance, NE along with a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Gene Sellmer and his wife Carole Sellmer of Las Cruces, New Mexico and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Jimmy, sister Ardella and her husband Lou, brother Alvin, and a grandson.
Funeral services will be Thursday, April 4 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 3 from 1-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
