By David Leavitt, Alliance Police Chief

ALLIANCE, Neb. – The Alliance Police Department would like to remind motorists of the importance of obeying Nebraska school bus stop sign laws to ensure the safety of children traveling to and from school.
According to Nebraska law:
-When a school bus extends its stop sign and activates flashing lights on undivided roads, all drivers traveling in both directions must come to a complete stop.
-On divided roads, drivers traveling in the same direction as the bus must stop.
-Vehicles may not proceed until the stop sign is retracted and the lights are turned off.
Failing to comply with these laws is a serious offense that endangers children and may result in significant fines and other penalties.
“As many in the community know, I occasionally help cover school bus routes,” said Chief David Leavitt. “I see firsthand how dangerous it can be when drivers are distracted or fail to stop. Staying alert and following the law isn’t just about avoiding an expensive ticket—it can save a child’s life.”
The Alliance Police Department encourages all drivers to remain vigilant and to prioritize student safety whenever they encounter a school bus on the roadway.
