A rollover accident on a county road in Box Butte County sent one person to the hospital on Sept. 27.

A 1997 Ford Expedition was driving eastbound on Madison Road between County Road 60 and 61 at 2:45 p.m.

"Basically, the single person in the vehicle lost control due to washboards on the road, " Box Butte County Sheriff Deputy J.D. Sutphen said. "The vehicle went off the roadway, hit a pretty sharp embankment that was enough to roll the vehicle onto its side. The person was trapped in the vehicle until the fire department [Alliance Volunteer Fire Department] got there and was able to get him out."

Sutphen said the person was transported to Box Butte General Hospital due to injuries.

"He had a slight concussion," Sutphen said. "I think that was more from when the vehicle rolled on its side and he smacked his head on the side window."

Sutphen said seatbelts were in use and there was no distracted driving.

Panhandle Post asked Sutphen what kind of advise he could give drivers when driving on washboard roads.

"This time of year with as dry as it has been...roads can be washboard, they can be soft, dirty and dusty," Sutphen said. "I think when the conditions are such as this and now that we're in the middle of harvest, it's time for people to slow down."

The name of the driver was not released.
