Richard R. “Rick” Batt, 79, passed away Sunday, March 22, 2026.

He was born June 8, 1946, in Alliance to John and Freida (Bowers) Batt and was raised in the Bayard area.

In 1965, he married Sharon Hughes, and together they had two children, Ronald and Jennifer. He later married Sharon Navarro (Batt) and welcomed her children, Nita and David Navarro, as his own.

Rick spent many years as a meat manager with Nash Finch Company, where he was known for his strong work ethic, leadership, and the respect he earned from those around him.

In 1984, he and his wife purchased Elm’s Restaurant in Alliance. Through long hours and unwavering dedication, they built what became widely known as the area’s premier steakhouse. Elm’s earned a lasting reputation for its high-quality food, excellent service, and welcoming atmosphere, and it remains fondly remembered by many. They operated the restaurant until 1992.

He later became owner and broker of Buchfinck Real Estate, where he continued his commitment to hard work, honesty, and serving others.

He also worked for many years as a conductor for BNSF Railway, a role he took great pride in and where his dedication and reliability were evident to all who worked with him.

Rick enjoyed woodworking and especially loved fishing at Lake Minatare, where he spent many meaningful moments with family and friends. Above all, Rick loved his family.

Survivors include his children, Ronald (Darcy) Batt of Hot Springs, South Dakota, Jennifer (Steve) King of Alliance, and Nita Peterson of Alliance; grandchildren, Michael, Rachelle, and Brandon King, Jaymes Batt, Heather Cotter, Dylan and Kelsy Peterson, Tyson Navarro (Carly), and Kaylea Faber (Tony) 15 great-grandchildren; his sister, Sharon Allen of Gering; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; his son, David Navarro; his grandson, Zack Looser; and his sister, Beverly Kolbet.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, March 28, at 10 a.m. at Bates-Gould Chapel, with burial at Alliance Cemetery. A memorial has been established and may be given in care of the family to Jennifer King, 1203 Toluca Avenue, Alliance, NE 69301.
