LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services celebrates National Public Health Week from April 6 to 12, 2026. Public health touches every part of life, from access to clean water and air to providing the education and resources that help Nebraskans live better lives.
The DHHS Division of Public Health administers over 125 programs and services. These programs are designed to help people live longer, healthier lives and protect them from health risks such as disease outbreaks and chronic conditions, support emergency preparedness and environmental health, document vital events and develop data-driven prevention efforts.
“We are excited to celebrate National Public Health Week, which highlights the outstanding contributions of Nebraska’s public health workforce,” said Ashley Newmyer, DHHS Director of Public Health. “Our communities are strongest when we work together to prevent disease, promote healthy living, and enhance quality of life for all Nebraskans.”
The Nebraska public health workforce consists of professionals working across many sectors, including the Division of Public Health, 19 Local Public Health Departments, academic institutions, Tribal health departments, healthcare providers and first responders. Whether they work in government health departments, hospitals, community clinics, or even in the field during an emergency, everyone involved in public health shares one common goal: protecting and improving the health and well-being of Nebraskans.
“Strong partnerships between local and state public health agencies are essential to building healthier, more resilient communities. Our local partners bring deep knowledge, trusted relationships, and the ability to put programs into action. Their community-driven insights are essential for prevention, response, and protecting residents’ well-being—leading to real, measurable impact across our state,” said Newmyer.
