ALLIANCE, Neb. - The Alliance Police Department is investigating a motor vehicle crash involving an electric bicycle and a passenger vehicle that occurred late this morning at approximately 10:19 a.m. near 7th Street and Toluca Avenue.
Preliminary information indicates that an 11-year-old juvenile was operating an e-bike when they entered the roadway and traveled the wrong direction on a one-way street before moving into the path of a vehicle that had the right of way. The driver of the vehicle was not found to be impaired, and no charges are anticipated at this time.
Officers and the Alliance Fire Department responded promptly after the 911 call and rendered aid upon arrival. The juvenile sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. The incident remains under investigation as part of standard crash investigation procedures.
Police Chief David Leavitt noted that in the past week alone, officers have contacted or stopped juveniles operating e-bikes on seven separate occasions for dangerous traffic violations, including roadway violations and unsafe riding behavior.
“This incident is a reminder of the importance of roadway awareness and adherence to traffic laws, especially among young riders operating e-bikes and bicycles,” the department stated. “We continue to encourage parents and guardians to reinforce safe riding practices.”
The public is reminded that:
- E-bikes must follow the same traffic laws as other motor vehicles
- One-way street violations significantly increase crash risk
- Helmets and visibility gear are strongly recommended for all riders
- Parents are encouraged to supervise and educate youth on safe riding routes and rules
