During the evening hours of June 4, 2026, Sgt. Young and Officer Dykes witnessed a traffic accident near the intersection of Pine Street & Second Street, when a vehicle travelling west struck a parked motor vehicle.

The officers initiated a crash investigation and learned the driver of the motor vehicle hitting the parked car was a 14-year-old juvenile. There were two adult passengers in the vehicle with the juvenile at the time of the accident, one of which received minor injuries during the accident and was transported to the Chadron Community Hospital for medical services by the Chadron Fire Department.

The other adult inside the vehicle was found to have an active warrant for his arrest out of Dawes County and he was immediately placed into custody. The accident investigation revealed the juvenile was driving the motor vehicle due to suspected alcohol use by the adult passengers.

As a result, the juvenile was issued a citation for not having an operator’s license and an adult male, 32-year-old Alan Yellow Horse Jr. was placed under arrest on the Dawes County Warrant and arrested for Intentional Child Abuse, a Class IIIA Felony. Yellow Horse was taken to the Chadron Community Hospital for medical clearance and then transported to the Dawes County Jail. Bond was set at 10% of $30,000.00 for the child abuse charge and 10% of $5,000.00 for the Dawes County Warrant.

Damage to the vehicles during the accident was estimated at approximately $4,000.00 total, with $2,500.00 to the vehicle driven by the juvenile and $1,500.00 to the parked motor vehicle.

The Chadron Police Department was assisted by the Chadron Fire and Rescue Department.
