LA VISTA, Neb. – With fraud incidents rising at an alarming rate in 2025, the Nebraska Bankers Association is taking proactive steps to protect consumers and communities across the state. As part of its ongoing commitment to fraud prevention and public education, the NBA officially launched its new awareness campaign, That’s a Red Flag, on May 7 during the association’s Annual Convention.

The campaign is designed to help Nebraska banks educate their customers and communities about “red flags” of fraud and scams, while empowering consumers to recognize suspicious activity before financial harm occurs.

Lt. Governor Joe Kelly joined bankers from across the state at the NBA Convention and announced a proclamation signed by Governor Pillen declaring May as Fraud Awareness Month in Nebraska, stressing the importance of heightened vigilance as fraud schemes continue to evolve.

“As we continue to see instances of fraud on a daily basis, it’s imperative that banks take action and do everything they can to educate consumers,” NBA Chair, Mark Linville with First State Bank in Randolph said. “Prevention begins with awareness, and that’s exactly what this campaign is focused on.”

Advances in technology have brought convenience and efficiency to banking, but they have also created new opportunities for fraudsters. Modern scams are increasingly sophisticated, making it more important than ever for both financial institutions and consumers to stay informed about emerging fraud trends.

Through That’s a Red Flag, NBA member banks will have access to educational tools and resources they can share with their communities throughout Fraud Awareness Month and beyond. The campaign reinforces the banking industry’s role as a frontline defender against fraud and a trusted source of information for Nebraskans.

“The goal is simple,” NBA President & CEO, Richard Baier added. “By staying on top of fraud trends and working together, we can help protect consumers, strengthen trust in the banking system and reduce the overall impact of scams across Nebraska.”
