Elderly man dies after driving into lake at Kearney park

KEARNEY, Neb.-An elderly man has died after he drove his vehicle into a lake at a Kearney park.

According to police, at around 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, officers responded to the report of a vehicle that had driven into the lake at Cottonmill Park, on the west edge of the city.

Officers arrived and found a Chevrolet Impala in the water.

Police said the driver of the vehicle Donald Corneer, 90, was pronounced dead at the scene after he was unable to escape the vehicle. His wife, 87, was able to exit the vehicle and was rescued by a bystander.

Police said she was transported to a Kearney hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Police were assisted by the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department dive team, the Buffalo County Sheriff's Office, Nebraska State Patrol, and Good Samaritan Health Aircare.
