On August 7, shortly before 2 p.m., Crawford Rescue and the Dawes County Sheriff's Office responded to an apparent horseback riding accident in rural Dawes County, south of town.

Upon arrival, it was determined that 74-year-old Linda Verhage had died on the scene and the Dawes County Coroner/Attorney was dispatched to coordinate the investigation. After viewing the scene, it was determined that Ms. Verhage had indeed died of injuries received in a horseback riding accident.
