Vera Alma Sherlock passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2026 at Highland Park Care Center with her family by her side. She was 101 years of age.
Vera was born on March 31, 1925 at home in Sioux County, Nebraska to Clara (Hockett) and John Weare. She was the sixth of seven children. She was raised in Sioux County on her dad’s farm attending rural schools until high school.
She attended high school in Harrison, NE where she boarded until graduating in 1944. From there she worked as a secretary for the County Agricultural Agent in Harrison for a couple of months. She then decided to move to Alliance where she worked at J.C. Penny Store and F.W. Woolworth Store.
On July 22, 1948 she married Michael Eugene Sherlock. To this union eight children were born, Michael Joseph, Linda, Malvin, Dale, Patrick, Thomas, Mark and Catherine (Kate.) They moved around different locations in Nebraska before settling on her husband’s family farm in 1960 where she lived until they’re divorce in 1976. At that time she moved back into Alliance to work at different bakeries until her retirement. She then enjoyed babysitting her grandkids and visits with her family. She lived on her own until a fall in 2022 when she required her move into a nursing home.
She is survived by her children, Michael (Mary) Sherlock of Ogallala, Linda (Gil) Davis, Dale Sherlock (Colleen Turman), Pat (Tammy) Sherlock, Tom Sherlock, Kate Sherlock (Rich Hunter), and her daughters-in-law, Joyce Sherlock and Nancy Sherlock all of Alliance. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 2 expected great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Alvin Weare, Joe (Emma) Weare and Ralph Weare, her sisters, Elizabeth (Harold) Kieper, Ruth (Joe) Kieper and Dorothy Weare, her sons, Malvin and his wife, Susan Sherlock and Mark Sherlock, her grandson, Corey Leisy and great-granddaughter, Landree Leisy.
Funeral services will be Monday, September 21, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Alliance. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be Sunday from 3-5 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel.
