The City of Chadron and Chadron Police Department are reminding citizens about recent changes to the city snow ordinance.
"Winter is making its presence known with bitter cold temperatures and precipitation in the form of snow and ice," Chadron Police Lt. Rick Hickstein said. "The streets and the sidewalks are becoming covered and we want to take a moment to remind our community members of some new changes to the city ordinance that were passed a few months ago in reference to the removal of snow and ice."
City Ordinance 13-209 states:
It shall be unlawful for the occupant of any lot or lots, or the owner of any vacant lot or lots within the corporate city limits of the City to allow snow, sleet, mud, ice, slush, or other substance to accumulate on the sidewalk contiguous thereto, or to permit any compacted snow, sleet, ice, mud, or other substance to remain upon the sidewalk for a period of time in excess of twenty-four (24) hours after the cessation of a storm.
Snow removed form non-single family residential private property shall not be placed in or upon the public streets or alleys, except for in the Central Business District of the City, snow from public sidewalks only (not parking lots or other private property) shall be pushed into the gutter of the streets outside the curb-line.
"Many people in the community utilize our sidewalks for walking/running and it is a matter of safety to ensure the sidewalks are free and clear of obstructions such as those listed in the ordinance," Hickstein said. "We would like to ask everyone for their assistance in ensuring their properties are in compliance with City Ordinance 13-209. If anyone has any questions about the new changes to the city ordinance or would like to report a violation call the Chadron Police Department at 308-432-0510."
