Alliance, NE – The Knight Museum & Sandhills Center invites the public to an engaging evening exploring the history, heritage, and conservation of one of the American West's most recognizable symbols, the Texas Longhorn.
The program will be held Tuesday, August 4, at 5:30 p.m. at the Knight Museum & Sandhills Center in Alliance.
Featured speaker Dr. Frank Sharp serves as Lead Educator for the Official State of Texas Longhorn Herd, which operates through the Texas Historical Commission at Fort Griffin State Historic Site. In his role, Dr. Sharp educates visitors and groups about the history and significance of the state's historic Longhorn herd while helping raise awareness about the preservation of the original Texas Longhorn.
With more than 30 years of experience raising Longhorn cattle, an extensive career in education, and doctoral research focused on the history and symbolism of Texas Longhorn cattle, Dr. Sharp brings a unique perspective to this fascinating topic.
During the presentation, attendees will learn about the origins of the Texas Longhorn, its role in shaping the American West, and the ongoing efforts to preserve the original breed. Many people are surprised to learn that the historic Texas Longhorn is now considered critically endangered as modern breeding practices continue to reduce the population of true heritage animals.
The presentation is part of the Knight Museum's continuing commitment to offering educational programs that explore the people, places, and stories that shaped the Great Plains and the American West.
The event is free and open to the public. Following the presentation, guests will have an opportunity to ask questions and visit with Dr. Sharp.
