Garza pleads not guilty in November Alliance hostage case

An Alliance woman pled not guilty on Wednesday on charges from an incident in November where she allegedly held her child hostage in a standoff with authorities.

34-year-old Yadira L. Garza was in Box Butte County Court on Wednesday, facing her arraignment on several charges, including use of a Firearm to Commit a Felony, a Class 1C Felony, Terroristic threats, a Class 1C felony, and Obstruction of Government Operations, a Class 1 misdemeanor. The original incident occurred on Nov. 2 when Alliance police responded to a welfare check, where allegedly Garza showed a firearm to officers.

A shelter-in-place was issued, and a standoff ensued before Garza surrendered peacefully to authorities shortly before midnight. 

 On Wednesday, Garza's defense counsel requested a bond reduction, as the Court ultimately decided to set her bond at $250,000, 10% requested. 

A status hearing was set for March 13. at 1 p.m.

District Judge Travis O'Gorman is expected to sign the journal entry in the case on Thursday.
