At approximately 12:00 p.m. on March 19 Nebraska State Patrol was called to a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 385 between Chadron and Hemingford.

"Upon arrival, a trooper discovered several bystanders attempting to assist those involved in the crash," Nebraska State Patrol Spokesman Cody Thomas said. "Preliminary investigation shows that a northbound Pontiac Grand Prix lost control while passing another vehicle, overcorrected, and struck a southbound GMC Sierra. The driver of the GMC was ejected from the vehicle. The driver of the Pontiac was trapped inside the vehicle."

Both drivers were transported to Chadron Community Hospital.

The driver of the Pontiac, Autumn Elsen, 19, of Gering, was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The driver of the GMC, Ross Grant, 47, of Alliance, was flown to Regional West Hospital in Scottsbluff for additional treatment.

Seatbelts were not in use in either vehicle.

The crash investigation is ongoing.
