The end of an era in the Box Butte County Sheriff’s office is approaching as longtime Box Butte County Sheriff Tammy Mowry officially announced her retirement in a conversation with Panhandle Post on Thursday.

Mowry was elected Sheriff in 2007 and has been in Law Enforcement for 43 years, and was the first woman to be elected sheriff in Nebraska history.

Mowry is thankful for the support of the community and issued this statement on Thursday. "Box Butte County has been really good to me, I'm grateful," Mowry said.

Mowry’s last day as Sheriff is August 31, and Panhandle Post will provide updates on the search for her replacement.
