Message from the Co-Chairs

As we reflect on 2025, we want to thank everyone who continues to invest time, energy, and leadership in the Six Regions, One Nebraska – Western Region effort. The progress made this year is a direct result of strong collaboration, trusted partnerships, and a shared commitment to the future of Western Nebraska.

Working alongside the Panhandle Area Development District (PADD) and many regional partners, we continue to focus on practical, long-term solutions in Housing, Childcare, and Education & Workforce. While there is more work ahead, the foundation is strong, and the momentum is real. We appreciate your continued dedication and look forward to building on this progress together.

Housing

In partnership with the Panhandle Area Development District (PADD) and JEO Consulting, work continues on the Western Region Housing and Infrastructure Study. This effort will result in a web-based, GIS-enabled platform that allows communities and stakeholders to visualize and track regional housing data through an interactive map. The tool will identify residential lots ready for development and support local data updates to ensure accuracy over time. Completion is anticipated in late Spring 2026.

Childcare

Significant progress was made this year with the release of Enhancing Workplace Support: A Guide for Businesses on Employee Childcare Needs. In addition, strong regional support helped raise $65,000 to unlock the matching challenge grant for the Panhandle Childcare Expansion Project. Led by the Panhandle Partnership in collaboration with Nebraska Early Childhood Collaborative (NECC), this initiative will launch a mentorship program to support individuals interested in starting in-home childcare businesses while promoting quality care and proper licensing. The goal is to create 200–250 new childcare slots across Western Nebraska by the end of 2027.

Partnerships

6R1N Western continues to move forward alongside the Panhandle Area Development District (PADD), strengthening relationships and building public-private partnerships across the region and statewide. These partnerships help align efforts, leverage resources, and support sustained regional collaboration. Stay tuned for the release date of PADD’s new and improved website.

Education & Workforce

Continued collaboration with regional organizations and employers is strengthening education and workforce efforts across the Panhandle. This work focuses on aligning education initiatives with regional needs, identifying effective workforce strategies, and supporting action leaders who are advancing practical solutions. Together, these efforts contribute to building a strong, sustainable workforce that meets the current and future needs of Western Nebraska.

Looking ahead, we plan to convene our Western regional meeting next Spring (date to be announced) to share the rollout of the JEO housing tool once it is ready, along with an update from our childcare partners on progress and next steps. We encourage everyone to keep up the great work across our region, and don’t hesitate to reach out to your Navigator with any questions. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a joyful holiday season!
