Lawrence M. (Larry) Holub, 93, of Alliance, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2026, at Box Butte General Hospital following a brief illness.
Larry was born September 28, 1932, at Sheridan, Wyoming, to John and Mary (Briscoe) Holub, the youngest of 12 children. He attended grade school at Dutch Creek in rural Sheridan County, Wyoming. He moved to Casper, Wyoming in 1951 where he was employed by the C.B. & Q. Railroad Civil Engineering Department. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1953 and served in S2 Intelligence during and after the Korean War. After serving 16 months in Korea, he returned to Casper and continued working for the railroad.
Larry was married to Signa Lindstrom on April 28, 1956, at Casper, Wyoming, and they then moved to Denver, Colorado, still working for the railroad. He was transferred to Alliance in September, 1960, and he was appointed Ballast Inspector. In 1966, he went to work for the U.S. Postal Service and he retired as a rural mail carrier in October, 1992.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Eagles Club, VFW Club, and American Legion Post #7, and was a charter member of the Nebraska Panhandle Country Music Association since its inception in 1979. He played guitar starting at age 12 when his brother Bill brought him a guitar. Larry took it out to the bunk house on the farm and by that evening, he had taught himself four chords. He never learned to read music, just “played by ear”. He was involved with several bands beginning in the late 1940s, including The Sagedusters, The Versatones, The Country Sounds, The Powder River Band, Cliff (Bartels) and Larry, Knox Road, and his own one-man band, “Larry”. He also volunteered his musical talent at the local nursing homes and at various community fundraisers along with Karl Panwitz, Joe Kulas, Dick Bowman, Ellen Nielsen, Rachel Lewis, Ken Hamilton, Ruth Campbell, and many others. After retirement, he volunteered for approximately 20 years at Carnegie Arts Center by helping hang the art displays.
Larry liked carving wooden revolvers to scale, and also making miniature guitars and miniature cars. He also enjoyed working on full-sized guitars and doing pearl inlay and customizing them.
Larry is survived by his daughter Judy (Danny) Sample of Alliance; brother Bill (Barbara) of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, five sisters and five brothers, and special friend Colleen Murphy.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Sallows Military Museum, Carnegie Arts Center, Alliance Rescue Unit, First Presbyterian Church, Alley Cat Campus, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, August 11, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Alliance. Inurnment with military rites will take place at the Alliance Cemetery.
