Wheat plots will soon be available for the annual Wheat Variety Tours hosted by the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Crop Performance Testing Program, local farmer-cooperators and university farm managers in June. Details and GPS pins for each event, as well as changes due to weather or other conditions, can be found at https://go.unl.edu/7a9b
Seven fields will be featured from Jefferson to Banner County will be highlighted, showcasing unique wheat varieties and experimental lines being tested across the state. The Department of Agronomy and Horticulture’s associate professor Cody Creech and research associate professor Amanda Easterly will lead the tours. They will be joined by Katherine Frels, agronomy and horticulture assistant professor and small grains breeder and Stephen Wegulo, Department of Plant Pathology small grains plant pathologist, who will provide updates and answer questions. Seed industry partners will also share insights. Previous years’ data and multi-year, multi-location summaries can be found at https://go.unl.edu/wsvt.
New for this year, one of the eastern Nebraska locations has been moved from Saunders County to Washington County with a returning farmer-cooperator.
QR codes linking to Google Maps pins for each location are provided on the tour website at https://go.unl.edu/7a9b. While the GPS coordinates are not exact, they should take you close to the plot. At most sites, an orange stake is placed in the first row. Plots will be staked with the variety name about a week ahead of the event date and will remain in place until just before harvest. Maps for each trial are available upon request to Dr. Easterly or Dr. Creech. As in the past, if you visit a field on your own, coordinate with local farmer-cooperators or farm managers before visiting a site.
