Gayle L. Dietrich, 73, left this life to journey to heaven on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.
Gayle was born May 20, 1953, in Alliance, Nebraska, to Lawrence and Lilly “Billie” (Darlington) Grabher.
She grew up on the family farm and attended District 44 country school until the 8th grade. She participated in many 4-H activities as a child, loved riding horses, water skiing and caring for animals. In August of 1970, she was crowned the Box Butte County Fair Queen. She enjoyed being a part of the Alliance High Pep Club, where she made many lifelong friends, graduated in the class of 1971 from AHS and went on to attend Chadron State College. She married Michael Dietrich on December 27, 1973, and to this family were born Sheridan, Alysson and Morgan. Raising their family was her most important work, and she helped take care of many close friends and family members’ children to help keep the girls entertained and to lend a helping hand to others.
Gayle was a very stylish and classy lady with simple morals that guided her life and daily actions. She was someone others admired and naturally gravitated toward because of her gentle, easygoing spirit. She always stood by her family, encouraged others and put their needs before her own. Her compassion toward animals was passed on to her from her parents, as they too were animal lovers.
Over the years, Gayle worked at St. Joseph Gerontology Center, Holstein’s Drug Store, Dietrich Distributing Company as an assistant bookkeeper and the U.S. Postal Service in Alliance as a mail clerk. She enjoyed the friendly competition of playing bridge with friends and was an active member of the local PEO Chapter AH. Gayle found joy in volunteering in a variety of ways, including participating on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic with St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church Outreach, with Alley Cat Campus, a 501c cat sanctuary for displaced cats and ongoing TNR program benefiting the city of Alliance community cats, and delivering for the Backpack Program to Alliance area schools.
Gayle was too humble to ever ask for much, and yet when she was in a time of great need, everyone showed up for her. Her generosity, kindness and goodness touched the lives of many. She especially treasured her grandchildren, and although their time with her was cut far too short, the seeds she planted in their hearts will continue to grow and carry on the love and goodness she shared with them.
She is survived by her husband, Mike of Alliance, Nebraska; daughters, Sheri (Jon) Daniels of Chadron, Nebraska, Lissy (Clay) Barnes of Cheyenne, Wyoming and Morgan (Jess) Wimmer of Alliance, Nebraska; grandchildren, Macey Daniels, Brady Daniels, Brooke Barnes, Gwen Wimmer, William Barnes, Cate Wimmer, Evan Wimmer and Leah Barnes; sister, Sandra Wood of Golden, Colorado; aunt, Lois Johnson of Alliance, Nebraska; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents, William and Mildred Darlington and Lawrence Sr. and Rose Grabher, and her parents, Lawrence Jr. and Billie Grabher of rural Hemingford.
Memorial services will be held Friday, October 16, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Alliance, with interment at the Alliance Cemetery.

The family would like to thank everyone who surrounded Gayle with love and cared for her during her final days. Her gentle spirit, compassion and generosity will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, until we all meet again.
