Gary L. Hashman of Alliance peacefully passed away Sunday, February 11, 2024, at Monument Health Hospital in Rapid City, SD with family by his side. His passing follows an over four-year battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis.
He was born on August 15, 1938, in Alliance, NE to Frank and Pearl (Bacon) Hashman. On April 30, 1961, he was united in marriage to Sharon J. Henkel at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Alliance.
Gary served in the U.S. Army from February 14, 1961, and was honorably discharged on February 13, 1963. He then returned to Alliance and worked for Alliance Consumers Cooperative and Western Potato before he began farming in 1975. During his farming career he received four Top 10 Beet Grower Awards from Western Sugar Company. He was an active member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church serving on the Board of Trustees, Stewardship Committee and as an usher. He also served on the Board of Directors for Westco Inc. from 1989 to 1997 and served as vice-chairman from 1992 to 1996.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sharon his children, Gail Hystad of Colorado Springs, CO, Dena (Mike) Wnorowski of Bayfield, CO and Andy Hashman of Longmont, CO. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Brandon Hystad, Ariel Curtis, Eli Monyek, Faith Hystad and Ruby Hashman and his nephews, Steve Stone, Dave Stone and Tom Hashman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Lois Nuss, his brother, Wayne Hashman, and his nephew, Ron Hashman.
Memorial services will be Saturday, February 24 at 2:00 p.m. at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church with Reverend Richard C. Mueller and Reverend Sean Daugherty officiating, followed by a gathering at Westside Event Center. A committal service will be Monday, February 26, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church or the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.
