SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. — Western Nebraska Community College is kicking off a year-long celebration recognizing a century of education, service, and community impact throughout the Nebraska Panhandle.
Founded in 1926 as Scottsbluff Junior College, WNCC has grown from humble beginnings into a comprehensive, multi-campus institution serving Nebraska's Panhandle. Throughout the past 100 years, WNCC has transformed lives through the dedication of its students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners. As WNCC celebrates its Centennial during the 2026-2027 academic year, the celebration will honor the people and stories that have shaped the College while looking ahead to the next century of opportunity and innovation.
“Reaching 100 years is a tremendous milestone, and it is a testament to the thousands of students, employees, alumni and community members who have contributed to the story of WNCC,” said WNCC President Greg Dart. “This celebration is about honoring our past, celebrating the present and building excitement for the future of our College and the communities we serve.”
The Centennial celebration officially begins with Centennial Premiere Night on Aug. 6 at 5:30 p.m. at the Midwest Theater in Scottsbluff. This free community event will feature a display of historical memorabilia, a digital timeline showcasing the College's 100-year journey, and the premiere of a short feature film celebrating WNCC's impact and service throughout the region.
WNCC will host multiple events throughout the year to celebrate, including the 20th reunion of the first Powerline Maintenance & Technology class in October, inducting the third class of the Athletics Hall of Fame in January, and a "Roaring Twenties" dance for the annual Jump, Jive, and Swing in May.
“WNCC has always been more than a college — it has been a partner, a pathway and a place where people come together to create a better future,” Dart said. “We look forward to celebrating the impact of the past 100 years and continuing that mission for generations to come.”
Throughout the Centennial year, WNCC will collect and share stories, photos, memorabilia and memories from generations of Cougars who have helped shape the institution. Community members, alumni and former employees are encouraged to contribute items and stories to help preserve the history of the College’s first century.
