GERING, Neb. — Weather permitting, work will begin March 30 on U.S. Highway (US-26)/U.S. Highway 385 (US-385), from reference posts 61+37 / 73+88 to reference posts 62+37 / 74+76, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. This is the junction of US-26 and 5th Street in Bridgeport to north of the bridges at Northport.

Werner Construction, Inc., of Hastings, is the prime contractor for this project. The work will start with phased bridge repairs on both the river bridge and the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) viaduct bridge and will last several months. Traffic will be maintained through this area with temporary traffic signals, placing traffic in one lane over the bridges.

Traffic will be maintained throughout construction with the use of temporary lane closures to minimize disruptions. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is Dec. 2026. Additional improvements planned for later this summer include concrete pavement repairs, installation of ADA-compliant ramps, and curb and sidewalk upgrades. The project will also add a pedestrian crosswalk equipped with flashing beacons to enhance safety, along with milling and asphalt overlay of the highways through town.

An informal public meeting will be held prior to the start of in-town construction to provide an overview of the project. This public forum will offer residents the opportunity to learn about the upcoming work, ask questions and share feedback.

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and put phones down.
