LINCOLN, Neb. - The Nebraska State Historic Preservation Office is pleased to announce the publication of Agriculture in Nebraska, 1850s–1960s.

The 539-page historic context study examines Nebraska’s agricultural heritage from the mid-19th century through the 1960s. The study addresses farming and ranching practices, landscapes and associated property types. It was prepared collaboratively by Stantec Consulting Services Inc. and the Nebraska State Historic Preservation Office with funding provided through the federal Historic Preservation Fund, administered by the National Park Service.

A historic context is a framework for understanding the history and significance of a theme, place, or time period. It draws connections between historic events, cultural trends and the physical resources that remain today. Contexts are essential tools for evaluating whether properties meet the criteria for the National Register of Historic Places and for guiding preservation priorities.

Agriculture in Nebraska, 1850s–1960s, serves as both a scholarly resource and a practical guide for preservation professionals, community planners and researchers. It supports National Register evaluations, informs educational outreach and documents the evolution of Nebraska’s agricultural landscape.
