SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. — Earlier this month, Educational Service Unit 13 (ESU 13)’s Valley Alternative Learning Transitioning School (VALTS) reached a significant milestone, celebrating more than 800 graduates, with a total of 805 students earning their high school diplomas since the program began in 1998.
The milestone was reached following the program’s most recent quarterly graduation on March 4, 2026, when six additional students completed their requirements and earned their diplomas.
VALTS provides a pathway to graduation for students who benefit from an alternative approach to learning. This includes those who may be behind in credits, disengaged from traditional school settings, or navigating significant life challenges. Through individualized instruction, strong systems of support and career-focused opportunities, the program helps them re-engage and successfully complete their secondary education.
“One of the things that makes VALTS unique is that students graduate when they are ready,” said Dr. Derek Peil, Director of Alternative Education. “Our quarterly graduation model allows students to finish as soon as they meet requirements, creating momentum and celebrating success throughout the year—not just in May.”
The program operates through an interlocal agreement among participating school districts across the region. By working together, districts are able to offer a high-quality option that supports students while maintaining strong graduation outcomes.
Reaching more than 800 graduates represents a meaningful impact not only for the program, but for the communities it serves.
“Each graduate represents a student who stayed on track, completed their graduation requirements and is moving forward with a plan,” said Dr. Laura Barrett, Administrator of ESU 13. “Their individual accomplishment has a lasting impact on our workforce, our communities and the future of our region.”
VALTS continues to serve students across western Nebraska, providing a supportive environment where students can focus on completing their education and preparing for what comes next.
