BAYARD, Neb. — On the morning of Friday, August 15, the Nebraska National Guard will conduct a training exercise featuring a series of paratrooper jumps near one of Nebraska’s most iconic landmarks. Between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m., paratroopers will descend onto the Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation’s north field as part of a coordinated training operation.

The public is invited to watch the exercises, with the best viewing from Walk to the Rock Trail C and the Foundation’s Chimney Rock patio overlook. Additional vantage points are available at the Ethel S. and Christopher J. Abbott Visitor Center. Alongside the impressive aerial display, visitors can also explore static displays of military vehicles and equipment presented on-site by the Nebraska National Guard.

This special event commemorates National Airborne Day, honoring the history and achievements of U.S. airborne forces.

“We’re excited to welcome the Nebraska National Guard to this historic site,” said Sandra Reddish, Western Nebraska Coordinator of the Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation. “It’s an exciting way to honor our military while providing a unique experience for visitors.”

Please note: All activities are subject to weather conditions and may be altered or canceled for safety.

About Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation

For more than 80 years, the Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation has worked to ensure that Nebraska’s history isn’t just preserved—it’s actively shared, explored and reimagined. Through private donations, the Foundation supports projects across the state that restore historic places, expand access to educational resources and bring new life to local stories. Signature programs like WanderNebraska invite people to connect with the state’s past in fresh, meaningful ways—whether by visiting a small-town museum, discovering a hidden landmark, or exploring a piece of forgotten heritage.

None of this would be possible without the generosity of donors who believe in the power of history to shape communities, inspire new ideas and connect generations. By supporting the Foundation, you help ensure that Nebraska’s story continues to grow—reaching more people, more places and new paths forward.
