LINCOLN, Neb. — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol removed 20 impaired drivers from the road during a special enforcement effort last weekend. The Put the Phone Away or Pay campaign coincides with Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
“The summer travel season is coming up soon, so it’s imperative that drivers get into the safe driving mindset,” said Colonel Bryan Waugh, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Before you get in the vehicle, make a commitment to put your phone down and avoid distractions. The moment it takes to look at your phone while driving may be the difference between a safe trip and roadway tragedy.”
In addition to the 20 arrests for driving under the influence, troopers also issued citations for speeding (375), driving under suspension (24), open alcohol container (9), minor in possession of alcohol (2), no seat belt (12), improper child restraint (4) and failure to move over (4). During the campaign, troopers also performed over 100 motorist assists on Nebraska roadways.
This effort was made possible thanks in part to grant funding from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office. The campaign ran from April 9 to April 13.
