Sandra (Sandi) Lucille Groves Shanks (1940 - 2021)

Sandra (Sandi) Lucille Groves Shanks was born on July 6, 1940, in Ainsworth, NE to Agatha and Clarence Groves. She was the eldest child and sister to Carolyn Groves Hand and Steve Groves.
Her early years were spent in the Kilgore, NE and Cody, NE communities where her father was the depot agent for Chicago Northwestern Railroad. She attended Chadron State College for one year and worked for the telephone company as a switchboard operator.

In 1960, Sandi married Glenn Shanks in Gordon, NE. To this union, three children were born: Carmen Drummond (Brian) of Omaha, NE; Loren Shanks (Kandie) of Greeley, CO; and Darren Shanks (Kristy) of Westminster, CO. Sandi was the proud grandmother of 4…Nick, Andrea, Dylan and Kenly, and great-grandmother of 3…Kennedy, Logan and Violet.

Sandi and Glenn were long time members of the First Presbyterian Church of Gordon, NE. She was part of the Presbyterian Women’s Circle. She proudly planted and maintained the petunia garden on the corner of 2nd and Oak Streets for many years.

Sandi enjoyed music and was known to sing and hum melodies whether or not anyone was around to listen. She enjoyed baking, quilting, planting flowers, bird watching, crossword puzzles, and embroidery. She gave many embroidered pillowcases and quilts as gifts to family and friends.

Sandi had an infectious laugh and a spirited sense of humor. She cherished her family and friends over the years. Making special treats and holiday meals was one of her great joys, and much enjoyed by many.

Sandi is survived by her 3 children, their spouses, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Glenn, her parents, Clarence and Agatha, and her sister Carolyn.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, December 27, 2021, 10:30 AM at the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Gordon Cemetery.

A Memorial Fund has been set up in Sandi’s name and any donations can be sent to First United Presbyterian Church, 136 N. Oak Street, Gordon, NE 69343.

Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
