DAWSON COUNTY-Officials with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission are asking for the public's assistance after finding parts from a bald eagle south of Lexington.
Game and Parks says the feet, head and feathers were taken from the body of a bald eagle at the Tri-County Canal Canaday Steam Plant river diversion sometime in February of 2021.
Officials say it is unknown how the eagle died, saying it could have been from natural causes. In any case, the harvesting and possession of bald eagle parts are illegal under federal law.
According to the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, it is illegal for any individual to keep a bald or golden eagle, including its parts (feathers, feet, egg shells, etc.) without a federal permit. State, tribal, and other permits may be needed as well. The penalty for doing so carries a maximum penalty of $100,000 and/or up-to one year in prison.
Anyone with information is asked to contact conservation officer Taylor Dixon at 308-217-2108.
