CAMBRIDGE, Neb.-Following a weekend of tragedy, officials with Cambridge Public Schools announced there would be no school on Mondy.
In a letter to parents, Superintendent Greg Shepherd said, "The Cambridge Public Schools will be closed Monday, April 24. In light of the impact of the ongoing fire and the stress and strain it has put on so many families in the area, the Board of Education and the Administration believe it is in everyone's best interest to have a day of decompression and rest as we move forward."
Shepherd also urged residents to stay away from the area impacted by the fire.
"As workers continue to address the fires, Emergency Services has asked that all kids and families stay home and allow them unobstructed roadways to continue their efforts," Shepherd said. "Please do not go out and see the damage during the next few days as fire equipment continues to travel throughout our roadways."
Over 70 fire departments battled the fire which has burned over 130,000 acres and claimed the life of former Cambridge Fire Chief, John Trumble, 66, of Arapahoe. Authorities said Trumble was overcome by smoke and fire after his vehicle left the roadway due to poor visibility.
Additionally, 11 firefighters have been injured battling the blaze which was one of many wildfires that broke out over the weekend.
Portions of southwest Nebraska are under a Fire Watch again today.
