Suspicious Circumstance leads to Canine alert and Two Arrests in Chadron

On Wednesday, February 7th, the Communications Center in Chadron received a call from a manager of a local motel that she was removing two guests due to possible marijuana usage.

Chadron police officers Christina Hanson and Canine Handler Seth Orsborn responded to area located near the 900 block of West Highway 20. Upon arrival the officers came into contact with two adults moving items from a room and into a Kansas plated vehicle. During their contact with the two adults, Canine Handler Orsborn utilized Canine Sukey, to which Canine Sukey alerted for the presence of illegal narcotics other than marijuana inside the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle was conducted, along with a search of the room the two adults were staying in. As a result of the searches, the officers located used syringes containing suspected methamphetamine, approximately 3.5 grams of suspected methamphetamine, suspected marijuana and several items of drug paraphernalia.

Both adults were placed under arrest and taken to the Dawes County Jail. 33-year-old Derek Howard and 39-year-old Tamara Perkins were charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance (Class IV Felony), Possession of marijuana less than an ounce (Infraction) and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (Infraction). Bond was set at 10% of $15,000.00 for each of them.
