John P. Courtney (1953 - 2024)

John P. Courtney passed away Friday, February 23, 2024 at his home in Alliance with his family by his side.  He was 70 years of age.

He was born on June 13, 1953 in Dodge City, Kansas to Leo and Iveda (McCabe) Courtney. John attended school in Hoxie, Kansas and graduated from Hoxie High School. 

He entered the U.S. Army on February 15, 1973 and was honorably discharged on February 13, 1976.  In Kansas John worked in farming, construction and truck driving before moving to Alliance in 1996.  He was then employed at Parker Hannefin for 18 years. 

On  June 19, 1998 he was united in marriage to Bobi Sample in Alliance. 

He is survived by his wife, Bobi, his daughter, Caroline (Jason) Lewis of Lillian, AL, his two grandchildren, Luke Lewis and Lillie (Kade) Peterson and his great-grandchild, Sutton Peterson.  John is also survived by the children and grandchildren he gained when he married Bobi, including, Erin (Al) DuBray and Lisa (Matt) Burri of Alliance, Jessi (Cody) Davis of Gillette, WY and Jennie Sample of Bridgeport, grandchildren,  Abigail Burri, Ivan Burri, Brooklyn Burri, Shawn Sample, Sofee Sample, Savannah Sample, Francis DuBray, Brianna DuBray, Wyatt Davis and Willow Davis and great-granddaughter, Dominique Sample.  He is also survived by his sisters, Georgia Briery of Norton, KS, Mary Courtney of OK and sister in-law Betty Courtney of Alabama..  He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, James Courtney.

John was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and extremely proud of his membership with the Knights of Columbus.  He was also a member of the Hemingford American Legion.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church with Father Tim Stoner officiating.  Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery with military honors by the Hemingford American Legion.  A wake service will be Tuesday, February 27 at 7:00 p.m. at Holy Rosary Church.  Visitation will be Tuesday, from 1-4 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Funeral Home and continuing at the wake service. 

Memorials may be given to the Knights of Columbus or Holy Rosary Catholic Church
