The Alliance Arts Council is sponsoring a production by Charles Ahovissi on Friday, Jan. 22 at the Alliance High School Performing Arts Center.
"Celebrate Africa" will start at 7 p.m.
Ahovissi is a professional dancer, drummer, performer, choreographer and costume designer. He's originally from Benin, West Africa.
Since 1986, Ahovissi has toured the world as a member of the Ballet National of Benin, performing and teaching traditional African dance and drumming. Now residing in Omaha, Ahovissi wants to share his knowledge and love of Africa through traditional dancing and drumming to foster better understanding of Africa’s diverse and beautiful cultures.
"Charles is the founder of African Culture Connection, which was one of 12 programs chosen from over 350 nominated to receive the 2012 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award," said Cindy Randall, Alliance Arts Council Director. "He received this award from First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House on Nov. 19, 2012."
Throughout this week Ahovissi has been conducting a residency in Alliance 4th grade classrooms. Students will have an opportunity to briefly join him on stage prior to the “Celebrate Africa” program Friday night.
Business co-presenters for the event are First National Bank, Harris Sales, KCOW/Double Q Country Radio, Western Nebraska Real Estate and Gregory’s Insurance.
Masks will be required and seating will follow social distancing guidelines.
Tickets are available at Carnegie Arts Center, Redman’s Shoes and at the door.
