The Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office recently responded to an incident involving a male subject believed to be experiencing a mental health episode. At this time, many aspects of the incident remain under active investigation.

The safety of the community remains the utmost priority of the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office. Situations involving mental health crises are often complex and require deputies to carefully evaluate numerous factors before determining the most appropriate course of action.

While some members of the public may believe an immediate arrest is the simplest solution, law enforcement agencies must also consider constitutional protections and civil rights obligations when making enforcement decisions.
