NDOT releases March traffic fatalities report

LINCOLN — During the month of March, 19 people were killed in traffic crashes on Nebraska roadways, according to data collected by the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

• These 19 fatalities occurred in 18 fatal crashes.
• Eight of the fourteen vehicle occupants killed were not using seatbelts, one was using a seatbelt, and five had seatbelt usage marked as unknown.
• Nine of the fatalities were in rural locations*.
• There were zero fatalities on the interstate, twelve on other highways, and seven on local roads.
• Icy roads were a contributing factor in one of the fatality crashes.
• Two of the fatalities were motorcyclists
• Three of the fatalities were pedestrians.

• There were 29 fatalities in March 2022.
• Only four of the 37 vehicle occupants killed during 2023 were using seatbelts.

* The Federal Highway Administration definition for urban is an area with a population of 5,000 or more.
