By PANHANDLE POST
One of Hemingford's more unique merchants is The Local, owned and operated by Johnna Wood and her husband Bob. The story of The Local began when Johnna, who was doing a painting job for a Hemingford resident, was enamored by the building and its potential. The Local was born in October of 2020.
During a visit with Panhandle Post, Johnna explained that Hemingford has had a rich history of gift shops, saying "Hemingford has always adored a gift shop and supported it."
Continuing that tradition, The Local offers unique gifts for every age and every occasion. There are candles, pottery, home decor, local soaps, a local earring line, and a coffee bar with hot and iced drinks plus treats including mini-donuts. Johnna's mantra for the business is: "Where shopping is fun--make it an experience!" That experience includes the cozy front porch entrance to the business, as well as a courtyard which is available for rent.
Johnna tells Panhandle Post that the store's merchandise and layout are frequently changing--and with major holidays like Halloween and Christmas on the way there will be a special selection of holiday-themed items.
At the end of our day at The Local in Hemingford, we asked Johnna Wood what her favorite thing in the store might be. Her answer: "My favorite things in the store is the people. The travelers we meet are amazing."
