Some time during the evening hours of February 19, 2023 and early morning hours of February 20, 2023,&nbsp; an unknown person or persons entered the Security Storage property located at 1135 W 16th Street, Chadron, Dawes County, Nebraska,&nbsp; cut the locks on the storage unit doors and forcibly opened multiple storage units with the intention of theft. 

A 1967, fully restored, maroon Ford Mustang Convertible valued at approximately $30,000 was stolen from one of the storage units. The vehicle was locked and the key was not left in the vehicle.&nbsp; Other storage units next to the vehicle were also forced open and contained valuable items but nothing was taken.

The Dawes County Sheriff's Office is asking for your assistance in solving this crime. If you have any information, please contact Deputy Sayaloune at 308-432-3025,&nbsp; or you can call the Dawes County Crime Stoppers at 308-432-0519.&nbsp; You may remain anonymous and could earn up to a $1000.00 reward. Alliance– The City of Alliance has declared a snow emergency starting Wednesday, February 22nd at 12:00 a.m. until Thursday, February 23rd at 12:00 a.m.

 Residents who live on designated snow routes are asked to please have all vehicles removed from the street to ensure accessibility for the City crews and emergency personnel. Due to the predicted snow totals, crews will be plowing snow on these routes multiple times. Per the City of Alliance Municipal Code Ordinance No. 2883, Sec.24-27, please note that it is the duty of the owner of every lot or parcel adjacent to a permanent sidewalk to clean off and remove all snow within 24 hours after snow accumulation, however, snow shall not be moved from lots, driveways, or adjacent sidewalks into the city streets, alley or neighboring lots. Such an offense shall be considered a misdemeanor and is punishable by a $100.00 fine. The Alliance Police Department will attempt to make contact with owners of any vehicles left parked on designated snow routes. Any vehicles not moved will be towed.

LINCOLN —&nbsp;Acclaimed Nebraska novelist
 Willa Cather, who would have marked her 150th birthday in 2023, will be
 celebrated throughout the year with a series of events.

The National Willa Cather Center will
 host events locally and nationally for Cather’s 150th birthday and also
 the 100th anniversaries of her Pulitzer Prize for “One of Ours” and the
 publishing of “A Lost Lady” and “April Twilights and Other Poems.”

Cather is celebrated, the center 
explains, for her discovery and use of a “distinctive American language”
 that included authentic immigrant experiences. Novels such as “O 
Pioneers!” and “My Antonia” (published in 1913 and 1918) marked the 
“wellspring” of Cather’s youth in Nebraska.

Ashley Olson, executive director of 
the Willa Cather Foundation, said it’s important to read and know about 
Cather, especially for Nebraskans, because her work elevated the state.&nbsp;

Cather’s body of work is known 
nationally and internationally, Olson explained, and people identify 
Nebraska and Cather’s hometown of Red Cloud with the author.

“I think it’s important that as 
residents of the state we know our own history and culture, and Cather 
is one voice that can help us learn and study those topics,” Olson said.

One event this year will be the 
unveiling of a statue in Cather’s likeness in the National Statuary Hall
 collection of the U.S. Capitol. Cather will join Chief Standing Bear as
 Nebraska’s two honorees in Statuary Hall. Cather’s statue and replace 
that of J. Sterling Morton in the hall. Fewer than a dozen women are 
represented in the collection.

Littleton Alston of Omaha, who 
created the statue, will also be the first African American artist with 
work represented in the collection.

“As much as it is a celebration of 
Willa Cather and her incredible legacy, it’s a wonderful connection that
 a Nebraska artist has done incredible work to represent her in the 
collection,” Olson said, adding she is confident the statue will be 
unveiled this year.

A significant restoration of Cather’s
 childhood home in Red Cloud, where she lived between the ages of 10 and
 16, is also underway.

According to the Cather center, this 
National Historic Landmark is notable for its preserved vernacular style
 and original wallpaper in Cather’s attic bedroom and will reopen to 
visitors in the latter half of 2023.

President’s Day closures for City of Alliance facilities

The Alliance Arts Council is bringing three powerhouse female singers, Divas Through the Decades, to Alliance on Saturday February 25th. The concert will be at 7:00 p.m. at the Alliance High School Performing Arts Center. Co-presenters for the event are Western Nebraska Real Estate, Harris Sales, KCOW/Double Q Country Radio, FNIC and FNBO.

Divas Through the Decades is a musical tribute to some of the most influential female vocalists in American pop music, featuring songs from the 40's, through today's current hits! The show features music made famous by various Divas including Tina Turner, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Celine Dion, Aretha Franklin, Gloria Estefan, Madonna, Beyonce, Shania Twain, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, and many more! The Diva's stage show is filled with electrifying vocals, cutting edge choreography, great costume changes, and a high energy performance that is second to none! Their musicianship offers unequalled authenticity as well as tons of fun! Not only will you experience iconic music and incredible singing and dancing, you will find comedy and sentiment throughout the performance as you witness the girls getting the audience involved and participating in the show! Over the past week, the Chadron Police Department has had an increase in reports of thefts from motor vehicles. 

"These crimes are usually preventable by simply locking your vehicle and not storing valuables in it," Chadron Police Chief Rick Hickstein said. "As temperatures warm up, there is a higher volume of pedestrian traffic. We recommend locking your vehicles at all times, especially overnight as part of a nightly routine. It is not a good idea to store valuable property such as bank cards, wallets, firearms, tools etc. unattended in your vehicle, but if you must, store these items in such a way as to not be visible to criminals that may seize the opportunity to steal your belongings."

If you are a victim of a theft from your vehicle, you can contact the Chadron Police Department Communications Center at 432-0510.

Mike McGinnis resigned from his seat as a Box Butte County Commissioner on January 5, 2023.&nbsp;

Applicants are being sought to fill the vacancy on the Box Butte County Board of Commissioners. 

Applicants must be registered voters and residents of Box Butte County.

 No person shall be appointed to fill the vacancy unless he or she has the qualifications required to be elected as a County Commissioner at the time of the appointment.
