SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. -&nbsp;Recent Western Nebraska Community College graduate Jordon Underwood of Oshkosh was named a Distinguished Chapter Member by Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society.

The awarded members are selected based on a student's embodiment of the Hallmarks of the Society through active participation in their chapter. It is awarded to students with exceptional leadership, scholarship service, and fellowship with their chapter and community. Only 30 students are recognized nationwide.

"It&nbsp;was a great honor I got the ability to receive a medallion for this award," Underwood said. "I was really thankful for friends, family, professors, and the PTK organization for this award."

In addition, he was also the recipient of the Board of Governors Award at the WNCC Student Award Ceremony in late April. This is the highest award conferred by WNCC, given to an outstanding graduating sophomore who best exemplifies the qualities of excellence in academics, leadership, and service to the college and the community.

During his time at WNCC and through his college project through PTK, Underwood spoke with students from area high schools about his experiences and the role that WNCC specifically played in his education.

"PTK and WNCC have made a big difference in my life," Underwood said. "I got the ability to meet new people and develop friendships that will last forever."

Underwood received his associates degree in May and plans to continue his education next fall at Chadron State College to pursue a bachelor's degree in elementary education.

For more than 90 years, Western Nebraska Community College has been educating residents of Nebraska's Panhandle. With campus locations in Alliance, Scottsbluff, and Sidney, WNCC offers educational, training, and growth opportunities for students, partners, and community members throughout its 12-½ county service area.

On Sunday 06/02/2024 at 11:35 AM the Scottsbluff Police Dept responded to a traffic crash with injuries at the intersection of Ave I and West 20th Street. 

Investigation showed that a red 2018 Range Rover driven by Gerald Kilthau, age 73 of Gering, was south bound on Ave I. There was a silver Chevrolet pickup east bound on West 20th Street driven by Robin Hubbard, age 70 of Morrill. The two vehicles crashed in the intersection of Ave I and West 20th Street. 

A passenger in the Land Rover, Jean Kilthau age 72 of Gering, was transported by ambulance to Regional West Medical Center.

 Gerald Kilthau was giving a citation for a traffic light violation. 

Both vehicles were towed from the scene due to damages. 

Assisting at the scene was the Scottsbluff Fire Department and Regional West Ambulance.

Did that last homeowner's insurance bill make you gasp? Why have our rates gone up so much in the last few years? There are two major reasons: climate change and inflation.

Look at how crazy the weather has been this spring. Tornados, hail, and flooding have occurred throughout Nebraska. We also have large areas still experiencing drought, and therefore prone to fires. Box Butte County has always been windy, but not like this! All of these weather events lead to property damage and increased insurance claims.

It is worse in other parts of our country. NOAA forecasters are predicting an 85% likelihood of more hurricanes this summer, "abnormally busy... with storms primed for rapid intensification." Some areas are rated higher for forest fires or mudslides. Because of tornados, Oklahoma has the highest rates in the nation. Some insurance companies will not provide coverage in specific states because of the weather risks. Flooding is the most frequent and expensive natural disaster in the United States, and most homeowner's insurance does not cover it.

Along with weather disasters, construction prices have gone up tremendously. These prices are based on building materials and labor costs. Lumber prices surged during Covid and are still fairly high. Construction companies have long relied on seasonal labor from our neighbors south of the border. Immigration restrictions have meant that labor is much harder to find, so wages have gone way up. Our insurance rates are based on replacement costs, which may be double the market value of our homes.

Insurance companies will evaluate several things when they set your premium rates. The first is location. Do you live in an area that has a higher likelihood of severe weather? What is the crime rate? How far are you from a fire station or a hydrant? Are building materials more expensive in that region?

The age and condition of your home affect your rates. Think about your roof. What materials were used? How expensive are they? How likely are they to be damaged by a hailstorm? An older roof is more likely to need replacement.

What coverages and limits are you choosing? Dwelling coverage protects your house. Personal property protects your belongings like furniture, clothing, art. Liability pays if someone is injured on your property. This might include things like falling or being bitten by your dog. Limits are the maximum the insurance company will pay.

Your deductible is how much you pay out of pocket before the insurance company pays anything. A higher deductible means lower insurance rates.

What is your claims history? If you've made several insurance claims in the past, you are a high risk and the insurance company will charge you more.

Most insurance companies look at your credit score. This indicates whether you manage your money well and pay your bills on time. People with excellent credit often pay much less for their coverage.

Do you qualify for any discounts? You might get a discount for a home security system. Maybe you can get a discount for making a single payment for the whole year or by enrolling in automatic bank deductions. Some companies give deductions for seniors, or for members of the military, or for veterans. Most companies will give a discount if you bundle with other types of insurance, like auto.

On May 21, 2024, at approximately 10:55 p.m. Deputies responded to a reported home invasion/armed robbery and assault at a rural Gering residence that is commonly used as a short-term rental.

Three males were inside the residence.&nbsp; They stated that two unknown males, both armed with handguns and wearing hooded sweatshirts and masks had entered the house and forced their way into two downstairs bedrooms. &nbsp;One suspect assaulted one of the victims by striking him in the head repeatedly with a handgun.&nbsp; The suspects stole credit cards, cell phones, identification, keys to a pickup, cash and a handgun from the victims.&nbsp; The victims were all forced to kneel on the floor. &nbsp;At one point, one of the victims retrieved a cell phone and called 911. &nbsp;The victims said that they didn’t know the suspects and could not identify the vehicle the suspects had, other than it was “loud.” &nbsp;The injured victim was transported to the hospital for treatment.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The owner of the rental property resides in a nearby house, and the suspects did not enter that house.&nbsp;

We believe that this was a specific, targeted event.

Within a very short time after this incident, we were in contact with Colorado authorities from more than one agency.&nbsp; One person of interest is in custody on Colorado charges, one vehicle has been impounded, and some property stolen from the victims has been recovered.&nbsp; Our investigators have been to Colorado and assisted with a search warrant, and we continue to work closely with Colorado agencies.&nbsp; We believe that the suspects are not from Nebraska and do not pose a threat to our area.&nbsp; &nbsp;

GERING – Legacy of the Plains Museum is excited to announce the official grand opening of the Japanese Hall and History Project&nbsp;on Saturday, June 8th.&nbsp; The museum will open at 9:00, with the Grand Opening Ceremony starting at 10:00 am.&nbsp; After the ceremony, the Japanese Hall will be open to the public.&nbsp; The event will end at 4:00 pm.&nbsp; It is free to the public, including admission into the museum.&nbsp;

There are a lot of great activities for kids of all ages, including: origami, calligraphy, several games, two dance troupes, Koto performance, medieval martial arts demonstration, Taiko Drums, and many more.

Since 2015, the Japanese Hall and History Project, with Legacy of the Plains has planned, relocated and renovated the hall and exhibits including a look at the early Issei migration to the U.S. and to the High Plains; their livelihoods in business and agriculture; coping with racism and prejudice; experiences during WWII and other military operations; cultural, artistic and athletic activities; the current and future state of Japanese Americans in the High Plains. Most items in the exhibits have been donated to the museum by families. These items include heirloom dolls, clothing, dinnerware, books, paper goods, and photographs.

Grand Opening of the Japanese Hall at Legacy of the Plains Museum

May 31, 2024 (Gering, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will begin June 17 on N-71, from reference post 136.69 to reference post 148.38, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

Werner Construction of Hastings is the contractor for this project. Work includes asphalt milling and paving, bridge work, culvert replacement, shouldering, and seeding. Traffic will be maintained with lane restrictions, a pilot car and flaggers, and temporary traffic signals. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is Nov. 2024. 

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down. 

Nebraska Department of TransportationMay 31, 2024 (Gering, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will begin June 17 on N-71, from reference post 136.69 to reference post 148.38, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.Werner Construction of Hastings is the contractor for this project. Work includes asphalt milling and paving, bridge work, culvert replacement, shouldering, and seeding. Traffic will be maintained with lane restrictions, a pilot car and flaggers, and temporary traffic signals. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is Nov. 2024. Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

May 1, 2024 (LINCOLN, NEB.) The Department of Revenue, Property Assessment Division, reminds real property owners who have suffered significant damage to their property on or after January 1 and before July 1, 2024, that a Report of Destroyed Real Property, Form 425 may be filed. 


For real property that has suffered significant damage as a result of a calamity occurring on or after January 1 and before July 1 of the current assessment year, the property owner may file the Report of Destroyed Real Property with the county assessor and the county clerk on or before Monday, July 15th. The report allows the county board of equalization to adjust the assessed value to reflect the damage done to the property. 

Calamity means a disastrous event, including but not limited to, a fire, earthquake, flood, tornado, or other natural event which significantly affects the assessed value of the property.

1. Damage to an improvement exceeding 20% of the improvement’s assessed value in the current tax year as determined by the county assessor;

2. Damage to the land exceeding 20% of a parcel’s assessed land value in the current tax year as determined by the county assessor; or

3. Damage exceeding 20% of the property’s assessed value in the current tax year as determinedby the county assessor if:

a. Such property is located in an area that has been declared a disaster area by the Governor and

b. A housing inspector or health inspector has determined the property is uninhabitable or unlivable.

The county board of equalization will consider the report to determine any adjustments to the assessed value for the current year.

We are incredibly relieved to share that Patricia Eichhorn, who was reported missing on May 28, 2024, has been found safe. 

 She was located dehydrated but otherwise in good health and is currently receiving the medical care she needs. We expect her to make a full recovery. A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in the search and rescue mission. Your support and efforts have been invaluable. 

Special thanks to the citizens of Alliance who aided in the search, the businesses that helped comb through security footage, and our brothers and sisters with the Nebraska State Patrol and the Box Butte County Sheriff's Office.

Alliance police, NSP continue to search for missing woman 

Lincoln, NE–Billy Broyles of Chadron is the second winner of a 2024 Ford F-150 XLT 4x4 SuperCrew truck in the 29th edition of the Nebraska Lottery’s $2 Truck$ &amp; Buck$ Scratch game.

Broyles purchased his winning Truck$ &amp; Buck$ ticket at Common Cents Food Store at 301 West Main St. in Chadron. He was presented with his new truck at Common Cents on Wednesday, May 29 by Nebraska Lottery officials.

Broyles said he usually sticks to Lotto games like Nebraska Pick 5, Powerball and Mega Millions, but something that day told him to get some Scratch tickets. After winning $45 on another ticket, Broyles decided to roll the dice.

“I bought 10 Truck$ tickets, which I never play,” he said. “It paid off because I won the truck!”

The win came at a great time, Broyles said, as his current car has bad shocks, rear brakes and wheel bearings. The new truck was an exciting prospect, he said.

“I couldn’t sleep,” he said. “I had to work at midnight and I couldn’t close my eyes.”

The 29th edition of the Nebraska Lottery’s popular $2 Truck$ &amp; Buck$ Scratch game features the 2024 Ford F-150 XLT 4x4 SuperCrew truck as its top prize. Players have the opportunity to win one of eight Ford F-150 trucks as well as thousands of cash prizes. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will accept applications for one 2024&nbsp;bighorn&nbsp;sheep&nbsp;lottery permit beginning April 15.

A $29 nonrefundable application fee must accompany each application. Only Nebraska residents 12 years and older are eligible for the lottery. It is unlawful to submit more than one application in a calendar year. Residents may receive only one permit in a lifetime. The permit is not transferable.
