Haigler, NEB. - No injuries reported after a semi-truck was struck by a BNSF train on Friday near Haigler.&nbsp;

According to the Dundy County Sherrif's Office, on Friday, just before 11:45 am (mountain time), Dundy County Communications received a report of a BNSF train that hit a semi-truck hauling a heavy excavator near U.S. Highway 34 at Mile Marker 2.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to officials, investigation shows the semi-truck became high centered when trying to cross the railroad tracks. The driver of the semi exited the vehicle before the train struck the semi-truck. He sustained no injuries. The crew of the train was also uninjured during the collision. The semi, trailer and at least one BNSF engine appear to have extensive disabling damage.&nbsp;

The Dundy County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Haigler Fire Department, Benkelman Fire Department and Dundy County Ambulance.&nbsp;

Please be advised that radio calls related to this exercise may be heard from approximately 8 a.m.-1 p.m., but they are related to the training exercise and are not actual emergencies.

TIM is a planned approach to detect, respond to and clear traffic incidents. This exercise is designed to give emergency responders and those supporting TIM operations a better understanding of TIM best practices by bringing together responders from a variety of disciplines who will work through a simulated crash response. The goal of the exercise is to expose responders to the complexities of a crash response, specifically through the perspectives of their partners. Having preestablished relationships and understanding the priorities and challenges of each discipline promotes safe and efficient responses.

This exercise is part of a statewide effort to improve TIM on our roadways. Effective TIM keeps emergency responders, crash victims and motorists safe. When crashes or disruptions occur, TIM practices reduce the duration and impacts of traffic incidents.

NDOT To Host Traffic Incident Management Field Exercise at Scottsbluff Airport

On June 7 at approximately 2:30 p.m. the Dawes County Sheriff's Oiffice and Dawes County Attorney/Coroner Vance Haug were dispatched to Crawford to investigate the unattended death of 80-year-old Terry Steinacher.&nbsp;

Steinacher was found unresponsive by friends in his home.&nbsp;

"After review of the scene, evidence at the scene, witness interviews, review of medical records and consoltation with medical professionals, it was determined that Mr. Steinacher died of natural causes,"&nbsp;Dawes County Attorney/Coroner Vance Haug said.&nbsp;

Soil: Must be brought to a solid waste landfill.

Animals: Must be buried or taken to a solid waste processing facility.

We have received several photos in our nature category but are still looking for additional photos in agriculture, recreation, wildlife and other. If you missed the first deadline, now is your chance to enter your photos for the 2024 Amateur Photo Contest to win cash prizes in our 5 different categories!

The deadline for the 2024 contest has been extended to July 19th . Please see the list below for requirements to enter your photos.

 The photo must be taken within the District (Box Butte, Dawes, Sheridan, Sioux counties).

 The photographer must be a resident of the District.

North Platte, Ne - The first Queens of Nebraskaland Days were crowned Saturday night after three nights of intense competition, Raechel Warren, Miss Douglas County, was crowned Miss Nebraska 2024, and Janae Harris, Miss Lincoln, earned the title of Miss Nebraska’s Teen 2024.  30 women competed in the prestigious event, showcasing their talents and achievements at North Platte High School.

Warren took home many preliminary awards during the week including winning the evening gown on Thursday night and talent on Friday night. As the new Miss Nebraska, Raechel Warren's&nbsp;Service Initiative is Passion to Purpose.&nbsp;“Encouraging youth to discover their passion and purpose by championing mentorship, encouraging community, and creating opportunity for self-discovery.“

North Platte, Ne - The first Queens of Nebraskaland Days were crowned Saturday night after three nights of intense competition, Raechel Warren, Miss Douglas County, was crowned Miss Nebraska 2024, and Janae Harris, Miss Lincoln, earned the title of Miss Nebraska’s Teen 2024. 30 women competed in the prestigious event, showcasing their talents and achievements at North Platte High School.<figure>

Miss Nebraska and Miss Nebraska's Teen 2024 Crowned

CHADRON – Sydney Brown is the new Publications Specialist at Chadron State College.

Brown, an alumna of CSC and a former Admissions Counselor, will assist the department of College Relations by publicizing news and events, managing social media channels, providing photographic coverage, and writing content for the website.

“College Relations, CSC employees and students, and the community will undoubtedly benefit from Sydney’s enthusiasm and dedication to creating meaningful content,” said Director of College Relations Alex Helmbrecht. “All of us in College Relations are excited to work alongside Sydney because her future is bright.”

Brown graduated magna cum laude from CSC in 2023 with a bachelor’s in accounting and a minor in art. She worked as an Admissions Counselor recruiting students for about a year prior to joining College Relations.

“I’m excited to continue my career at Chadron State College and within the College Relations department,” Brown said. “CSC, including its students, employees, and alumni, have so many great stories to tell and I am eager to share them.”

Scottsbluff, Nebraska-The Scottsbluff Police Department has received a speed enforcement grant. The grant is funded by the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office. The funding will be used to pay officers to work overtime to patrol Broadway and 27th Street on Friday and Saturday nights.

Sergeant Philip Eckerberg said “this funding will allow Scottsbluff Police to address the numerous complaints of speeding and reckless driving that occurs during the cruising time on Friday and Saturday nights. Over the last 12 months there have been 146 non injury crashes, 20 injury crashes, one crash fatality, and 367 citations issued on the cruising route. Cruising has been a tradition in Scottsbluff since the mid-20TH century; however, this grant will help us to keep cruisers safe.”

The grant starts on Friday June 7TH, 2024 and continues through Saturday August 10TH, 2024. The funding is sufficient to pay for two officers to be out on the cruise route every Friday and Saturday evening during the grant.&nbsp;&nbsp;

LINCOLN — Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen announced his next two town hall meetings to rally public support for proposals to offset up to 40% of property taxes by eliminating some sales tax exemptions and/or increasing sales tax rates.

Pillen is hosting a town hall at 2 p.m. Friday in Fremont, at Midland University’s Dining Hall,&nbsp; Ninth and Pebble Streets.&nbsp;

He also is hosting a meeting at 2 p.m. Saturday in Scottsbluff, in the Platte Valley Bank, 1106 Platte Valley Drive.

The governor has pledged to call a special session this year to address property tax relief, with some speculating that call could come as early as late July or early August. Others have said it might wait until after the November election.

He has held similar property tax town halls in Bellevue, Grand Island, Plattsmouth, Seward, York and Beatrice. He has also been meeting in Lincoln with a bipartisan group of lawmakers and others about potential changes.

His initial proposals to increase sales taxes and use that money to offset up to $2 billion in property taxes faced some opposition in the Legislature. But the pace of property valuation increases has ramped up some interest.

“Nebraskans … expect state leaders to solve the property tax crisis,” Pillen said in a press release. “While we are counting on the Legislature to develop the right solution, all Nebraskans must be part of this conversation.”

If you seek adventure, relaxation and fun this summer, kayaking should be on your list. Nebraska’s state parks and recreation areas offer excellent locations, some with recently added improvements for kayakers.

Plan your next adventure beneath Nebraska skies at one of the following state parks, selected by Nebraska Game and Parks regional superintendents.

North-central: Calamus State Recreation Area

Kayakers will find easy access at Calamus State Recreation Area, with sandy beaches to launch from, said Regional Park Superintendent Tommy Hicks. The park also features diverse habitats along the lake and river edges, making it a great place to view wildlife and bird-watch.

In addition, the lake’s shallow coves, as well as Calamus River, offer great places to escape the open water of the reservoir. The river, on the reservoir’s upper end, winds peacefully and slowly through the Sandhills, providing beautiful scenery and wildlife viewing. The river is shallow enough those with small children or novice kayakers can enjoy it, too.

Southwest: Red Willow State Recreation Area

“In the southwest region, there are so many good options for kayaking it makes choosing one location difficult,” said Regional Park Superintendent Tyler Francisco. “If I had to pick one, it would be Red Willow.”

Red Willow State Recreation Area offers 1,628 acres of water for paddling, and even when the lake is full of motorboats, kayakers will find plenty of shallower areas to slip away. Francisco also praised the beautiful views from the lake, as well as the wildlife watching and birdwatching opportunities.

“As you paddle along, you are tucked into what feels like a large canyon due to the location of the reservoir and water levels,” he said.

Southeast: Conestoga State Recreation Area

Located just west of Lincoln, Conestoga State Recreation Area is the perfect place to go kayaking, said Regional Park Superintendent Kevin Holliday. It features great access points for kayakers – including an ADA-accessible kayak dock. And thanks to a recent renovation project, the lake is now no-wake and has great fishing, if that’s something you like to do while kayaking.

Wildlife watching is another activity kayakers can enjoy; Park Superintendent Otis Chatham commented that you might spot deer and waterfowl during your float. He sees over a dozen people out kayaking at Conestoga on the weekends.

“Conestoga has become a very popular kayak lake,” Holliday said.

Venture Parks: Louisville State Recreation Area

Nebraska Game and Parks’ Venture Park region in southeastern Nebraska includes some of Nebraska’s biggest and best-known state parks. But when picking his favorite spot to kayak, Venture Parks Regional Superintendent Jake Rodiek went for a smaller park: Louisville State Recreation Area.

Louisville boasts five sandpit lakes with approximately 50 surface acres of water, surrounded by towering cottonwood trees. If you don’t have your own kayak, you can rent one at this park, along with paddleboards and water bikes. A kayak launch is available as well, and those looking for a little more adventure can put in at the kayak river access launch to explore the Platte River.

South-central: Johnson Lake State Recreation Area

“The I-80 lakes always make great places to put in a kayak,” said Regional Superintendent Laura Rose. Her top pick for kayakers this year is Johnson Lake State Recreation Area, which just added a new vendor renting out kayaks on Bossung Lake, a pond next to Johnson Lake, with access between the two. A kayak launch is located next to the vendor’s site. &nbsp;

Bossung is “a great place for beginners to learn how to kayak,” Rose said. Meanwhile, if you enjoy fishing, head out to the main lake, where you can find good fishing for walleye and wipers.

Across both water bodies, kayakers can enjoy a tree-lined view and spotting wildlife such as wood ducks, blue herons, turtles, jumping fish and even beavers.

Kayak anglers, as well as those seeking a new or leisurely experience, will want to check out Fort Robinson State Park. The park has six to eight kayaks for rent by the day, and those interested in kayak fishing can hit its five ponds that harbor species such as rainbow trout, bluegill, largemouth bass and channel catfish.

Then there’s the stunning views of the buttes in the background, which by itself makes the trip worth it, said Park Superintendent Donita Morava. You also may spot wildlife such as deer, pronghorn, turtles and many bird species.

Northeast: Danish Alps State Recreation Area

“This location is a paddler’s paradise,” said Regional Superintendent Tyler Wulf. Danish Alps State Recreation Area opened in 2015 and sits on a 219-acre no-wake lake. It features a newly constructed ADA-compliant kayak launch with accessible parking, an unloading area and a soon-to-be-installed kayak launch dock, which should open sometime in June.

Kayakers also will find kayak-in campsites in the southern part of the property, and if you like to fish, there’s great opportunities for bass, bluegill, crappie and walleye.

Wherever you decide to kayak, it’s important to remain safe. As you prepare for your trip, bring a friend or let someone know when you’re going and when you plan to return. Keep an eye on the forecast, as weather can change quickly. Wear a properly fitted life jacket, as well as appropriate clothing for the water temperature, and keep your phone and other essential supplies in a waterproof case or bag secured to your vessel.

When you’re out on the water, avoid alcohol and drink plenty of water instead. Be courteous of others using boat ramps and launch sites, and watch out for motorized watercraft around you.&nbsp;

Flag retirement at Sallows Military Museum in Alliance

CHADRON – Former Chadron State College student Elise Aguilar is benefitting from a 3+1 agreement she helped set in motion between CSC and Palmer College of Chiropractic.&nbsp;She recently completed her first year at Palmer in&nbsp;Davenport, Iowa,&nbsp;and describes the experience as amazing.

Aguilar knew after touring Palmer the summer between her sophomore and junior year at CSC that she wanted to eventually attend Palmer. However, at that time, there was no 3+1 agreement between the two institutions. When Aguila returned to CSC for her junior year, she helped connect her academic advisor, Dr. Rachelle Rider, with Palmer staff who started working on the 3+1 agreement.

“Although it took some time to get the agreement in place, it has been well worth it to reduce a year of tuition while also shortening the time I will be in school by a year,” she said.

Under this agreement, CSC students will be awarded a bachelor’s degree from CSC after completing their first year at Palmer and transferring back their earned credits.

When Aguilar enrolled in the Gross Anatomy I Lab at Palmer, she said she was able to build on the knowledge she acquired at CSC.

“That foundation made a tough course something I looked forward to learning about. Looking back on this past year, I can see how I have built what I’m learning here at Palmer on top of what I acquired at Chadron,” Aguilar said. I feel like I was well prepared. Not only did CSC expose me to the chemistry and anatomy course materials I continue to learn about at Palmer, but CSC was able to give me hands-on experience in a cadaver anatomy lab that I now realize many of my peers didn't have access to at their undergraduate institutions.”

To other students interested in chiropractic medicine, Aguilar recommends pursuing the 3+1 program between CSC and Palmer.

“I may be a bit biased because Palmer is the school I now attend, but it is truly amazing. It’s where chiropractic all started, it is known as the ‘Fountainhead of Chiropractic’ for a reason,” she said. “I encourage other students to be like sponges and soak up everything available, the knowledge, the help from the people around you, and all the experiences available to you.”

She said the demands of a rigorous graduate program have been worthwhile.

“I have learned so much in such a short time and have met so many new people and lifelong friends while working toward my dream career as a Doctor of Chiropractic,” Aguilar said.

North Platte, Ne - The first Miss Rodeo Nebraska Pageant was held in 1956, and since 1991 the Hall of Fame Buffalo Bill Rodeo at Nebraskaland Days in North Platte has been the backdrop for Nebraska's top rodeo royalty. Miss Rodeo Nebraska, JoSee Saults from Big Springs, Nebraska began her rein in January and will hold the title through the Miss Rodeo America Pageant in December. Maci Cox from North Platte is the current Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska.&nbsp;

Both ladies will see their successors compete over the next week to become the next Miss Rodeo &amp; Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska. Coronation for both are next Wednesday in North Platte.&nbsp;

Human papillomavirus (HPV) cannot be treated, but there is a vaccination that can prevent transmission and protect against six cancers if initiated prior to exposure. HPV vaccination is a critical prevention tool, safeguarding children, and adolescents against more than 90% of HPV cancers when given at recommended ages.

Routine HPV vaccinations can be given starting at age 9 through age 26. Getting this vaccination starting at age 9 results in a strong immune response and provides long-lasting protection.

“Cervical and oropharyngeal cancer can be painful, debilitating, and lethal. There’s a very effective vaccine that can safely &amp;amp; effectively prevent up to 90% of these cancers. It is critical that young people in our country get vaccinated! It can prevent them from having to undergo significant pain and suffering many years down the road,” said Dr. Vince Bjorling, board certified in Internal Medicine.

Between 2012-2019 there was a 65% reduction in cervical cancer in women in their 20s. This was the first cohort to receive HPV vaccination. Cervical and oropharyngeal cancer are the two most common cancers associated with HPV infection. Ninety percent (90%) of cervical cancers are caused by HPV infection. It may be decades after infection before these cancers develop.

We all know people who no longer use banks or credit unions. Why? In most cases, it is the overdraft fees. Families who live paycheck to paycheck pay the majority of these fees, and it is often hard to understand why they have been charged.

Families who live paycheck to paycheck pay the majority of these fees, and it is often hard to understand why they have been charged.An overdraft fee is a bank charge that occurs when a withdrawal or purchase causes a negative balance in a bank account.&nbsp;The bank will charge a fee in addition to covering the transaction.&nbsp;The banks in our area typically charge $30-35 per NSF (Non-Sufficient Funds) transaction.The account might be overdrawn because a check has been written for more than the account balance. A transfer or automatic bill payment may have been made from the account causing the negative balance. More likely, a debit card was used and the payment was honored, and the overdraft fee was charged. This is such a big problem that next week's column will be about debit cards and overdraft fees.Here is an example from Bankrate.com that explains how overdraft fees work: "Suppose, for example, you have $50 in your account, but you need $75 to pay for an immediate expense, such as a car repair. You’re $25 short, but the bank loans you that $25 and the payment clears. Now, let’s say the bank charges a $30 overdraft fee. That $30 fee, plus the $25 overdraft, would leave you with an account balance of -$55." While that account is negative, any other payments that come out of it will also be charged overdraft fees, and there may be another charge if the account is negative more than a few days.Banks do not have to honor deposits immediately, so people often think they have money in the account, but it has not been posted yet. Some banks shift the order of transactions on a given day, taking out the largest first. If this creates a negative balance, the bank can charge a separate overdraft fee on each transaction. Federal regulators like the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau have curtailed a lot of these practices, but some banks still use them.Overdraft fees are often called "courtesy pay" or "overdraft privilege." Banks want you to think they are doing you a favor, because they are saving you the embarrassment of having a payment refused. Realize it is a major profit maker for them!If you write a check for more money than you have in your account without any overdraft coverage, the check will not be paid and it will be returned to the person or business you wrote it to. You may be charged an overdraft fee.&nbsp;You will probably be charged a fee by the merchant as well, since your check wasn't honored by your bank.Automated Clearing House (ACH) transactions from your bank, such as direct payment or bill pay services, may be declined if you do not have enough funds in your account. Many of us set up these automatic payments for things like utilities or subscription services. Some banks charge NSF fees when they are declined.How can you avoid paying overdraft fees?Utilize your bank's online options, so you can check your accounts whenever you want to see what your balance is and whether certain payments have cleared.If you have a savings account at the same bank as your checking, you might think about linking your savings account to your checking account. If you overdraw your checking account, the bank can pull funds from your savings to cover the shortage, as long as you have enough funds available. Your bank may still charge you a fee for transferring the funds, but it will be less than an overdraft charge.Consider signing up for an overdraft protection line of credit. You will pay a fee to have this available, but the bank will loan you up to a certain amount (and charge interest) if you overdraw your account.Set a low-balance alert on your account so you get an email or text when your account has dropped below a certain amount.Shop around for a bank or credit union that charges lower fees. There are even some national chains that recently changed their policies and do not charge overdraft fees.Don't let your account balance become negative, and you won't have to pay those overdraft fees.
